FANTASTIC FOUR Kicking Off Marvel Studios’ Phase 6 in November 2024 https://nerdist.com/article/fantastic-four-kicking-off-marvel-studios-mcu-phase-6-in-november-2024/ Tue, 11 Oct 2022 18:51:00 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=919545 After years of waiting, we got our first official news about the MCU Fantastic Four reboot at the Marvel Studios panel at SDCC.

The post FANTASTIC FOUR Kicking Off Marvel Studios’ Phase 6 in November 2024 appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Ever since late 2020, when Kevin Feige announced a Fantastic Four movie at Disney’s Investor Day presentation, fans have eagerly anticipated any news regarding Marvel’s First Family on the big screen. And at SDCC’s Marvel Studios Panel, we finally got our first announcement, as Feige formally announced that Fantastic Four has a release date of November 8, 2024. (The movie’s release date has since changed to February 14, 2025) and will officially kick off Phase 6. As the Thing would say, it’s officially “Clobberin’ time!”

The Fantastic Four have had a somewhat rough go of it at the movies. This despite being the title that launched Marvel Comics. The original 1994 low-budget Roger Corman film was never even released to theaters, as it was made only to keep the rights to the franchise. Then, Fox’s 2005 Fantastic Four movie came out, hot on the heels of X-Men. The movie was a financial success, but audiences didn’t fall in love with this goofier version of the team. It didn’t help that Pixar’s The Incredibles came out the year prior, and was a great FF movie in disguise.

Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four movie logo.

The Fantastic Four sequel, Rise of the Silver Surfer, was even less liked. Mostly due to Galactus appearing only as a giant cloud. That killed the FF franchise for eight years, until 2015. A new reboot came out that year, that had both horrible reviews and horrible box office. It seemed the heroes of “The World’s Greatest Comic Magazine” would never get justice.

John Krasinski as Reed Richards in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Marvel Studios

But when Disney bought Fox, the possibility for a true FF movie from Marvel Studios became certain. And at last, it’s finally happening. We got our first glimpse at what an MCU Reed Richards might look like in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness earlier this year. But that was the Mr. Fantastic of Earth-838. Might Earth-616 Reed be someone other than John Krasinski? Hopefully, we’ll hear about the director and cast at the D23 Expo, later this year. Production is set to begin in 2023 so we can expect lots of tidbits between now and 2024.

Jack Kirby Takes Center Stage in Oral History of Comic-Con Book https://nerdist.com/article/jack-kirby-oral-history-of-san-diego-comic-con-book/ Fri, 26 Aug 2022 16:00:00 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=923715 In honor of Jack Kirby's 105th birthday on August 28, his fans remember "the King" as part of a new oral history of Comic-Con book.

These days, Comic-Con International is the nexus of nerd culture. No matter what you’re into, whether it’s film, TV, gaming, or actual comic books, it all converges in San Diego for four days every year. But it all started over fifty years ago, as just a small gathering of comics fans. Back in an era when geeks absolutely did not rule pop culture.

And right in the middle of it all in those earliest days was legendary comics creator Jack Kirby, who would have turned 105 on August 28. The new book by Mathew Klickstein, See You at San Diego: An Oral History of Comic-Con, Fandom, and the Triumph of Geek Culture, chronicles the convention’s origins. And at the center of the history of Comic-Con and this book is Jack “King” Kirby.

Fantagraphics Books

The Comic-Con book describes how Jack Kirby met with young fans in his home as early as 1969. One full year before Comic-Con officially began. In the book, many of those same fans talk about meeting him back in the day. Not only Kirby, but also Forrest J. Ackerman, the godfather of geek culture. In the excerpts below, you read about those early meetings with Kirby. And all the fond memories that his fans have of meeting “the King.”

Below is the official description for See You at San Diego: An Oral History of Comic-Con, Fandom, and the Triumph of Geek Culture:

See You At San Diego is the comprehensive chronicle of Comic-Con International and modern geekdom itself as told through countless stories by nearly fifty of the most integral members of the Comic-Con and fandom scene. This full-fledged oral history, bursting with intimate reflections, hilarious observations, and at times, heartbreaking, often thought-provoking stories, is about how the geek at last inherited the earth and the story of the transformation of mainstream American pop culture into comic book culture over the past century.”

The names contributing to this oral history are many. Among them Neil Gaiman, Frank Miller, Kevin Smith, Bruce Campbell, and Felicia Day. Also, Scott Aukerman, Stan Sakai, Sergio Aragonés, Trina Robbins, the Russo Bros., Lloyd Kaufman, Tim Seeley, and Kevin Eastman. There are also over 400 photos included. Not to mention, forewords by Stan Sakai (Usagi Yojimbo) and Jeff Smith (Bone). Finally, there’s an afterword by Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA. See You at San Diego: An Oral History of Comic-Con, Fandom, and the Triumph of Geek Culture ships on September 6. You pre-order it right now by clicking on this link.

Comic-Con In-Person Event This Thanksgiving May Not Happen https://nerdist.com/article/comic-con-canceled-july-virtual-november-in-person/ Tue, 13 Apr 2021 21:43:16 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=792124 There won't be an in-person San Diego Comic-Con this summer due to the pandemic once again. But there are now plans for a November event.

The post Comic-Con In-Person Event This Thanksgiving May Not Happen appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Last year, right as the pandemic hit, several conventions like WonderCon and ECCC canceled their in-person events. But the hope was that, by summer, San Diego Comic-Con could still take place. As it turned out, that was very much not the case. And it appears it won’t be the case in 2021 either. Not for summer, at least.

In March, the official Comic-Con International Twitter account announced a different in-person event. There will be another “Comic-Con at Home event” this summer, but only for three days as opposed to four. However, an in-person special event in San Diego is planned for this Thanksgiving. According to a press release, “Comic-Con Special Edition” will take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, November 26 to 28 at the San Diego Convention Center.

The free three-day Comic-Con@Home virtual event is still happening in the usual summer slot. July 23-25 to be specific.

However, as of April 13, whether or not the event would take place was up in the air. Reports on Twitter started circulating that the event had been cancelled. Later that day, IGN published that Comic-Con International was still very much planning the Thanksgiving weekend event, but explained it may not be logistically possible.

“Currently we do not know whether having this event in November is even feasible as we are still in the midst of the pandemic and while we are optimistic about Q4, we have not been privy to any specific information on large gatherings,”

As part of their original statement, the SDCC account said the following: “The past several months have taken a great toll on both families and friends, and we hope this effort is a small move toward a return to gathering as a community to not only celebrate popular art, but also friendship, education, and the enduring spirit of the fandom that is so much a part of Comic-Con.”

Comic-Con Interantional

The whole “in-person Thanksgiving” decision raised some criticism online. With vaccines in effect, Thanksgiving could be the first big family-centric holiday gathering people can safely attend this year. Holding Comic-Con that same weekend will force people to choose between trips home and trips to San Diego.

Comic-Con organizers responded to the backlash, posting an updated release on the official website that reads: “Of the dates presented with the fewest restrictions, Friday through Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend seemed to be the best balance of available space and our envisioned event. As longtime fans ourselves, we have attended many conventions over that holiday weekend, opting to spend Thanksgiving day with family and the rest of the weekend with friends and our families of choice.”

Time will tell if this Thanksgiving move is a good payoff. Or if criticism won’t provoke another date change. We’ll keep you posted if new information becomes available.

This piece was originally published on March 1, 2021 and later updated March 29, 2021.

Looking Back at TWILIGHT’s Impact on Comic-Con https://nerdist.com/article/twilights-impact-on-san-diego-comic-con/ Fri, 20 Nov 2020 17:00:17 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=768590 The teen vampire movie Twilight arrived in 2008. And it completely changed San Diego Comic-Con that year. Explore how it shook up the convention.

The post Looking Back at TWILIGHT’s Impact on Comic-Con appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Twilight enchanted, terrified, and sent viewers into mild hysterics for years. The Stephenie Meyer book series turned blockbuster franchise has had a huge impact on pop culture, but it also played a part in shaping one of the most pervasive nerd culture staples: Hall H panels at San Diego Comic-Con. To celebrate the anniversary of the movie and its historic Hall H debut, we reached out to Comic-Con International and chatted with Chief Communications and Strategy Officer David Glanzer over email about the 2008 Twilight panel, its impact, huge attendance, and what it means to the people who put the convention together over a decade later.

SDCC had already been shaping pop culture for 38 years in 2008. As Glanzer explained, debuting a new hit film at the convention made sense. “Comic-Con has many great relationships with a variety of companies, including television networks and movie studios. In fact, in 1976 Lucasfilm sent representatives to Comic-Con to talk about their new film Star Wars a full year before its release and at a time when few outside of Hollywood knew much about it.” The team at Comic-Con saw the same potential in Meyer’s smash vampire YA, so when the studio reached out it made sense. “I think the same was true of Twilight. We were approached by the studio about the possibility of having a Twilight panel. Since many on our team are voracious readers and up on current fare, it seemed like a good fit.”

The Twilight panel has become legendary among Comic-Con attendees in the years since ’08. It introduced a whole new demographic to the convention. But the amount of fans who attended never took the convention by surprise. “We try to place programs in rooms that can best accommodate anticipated attendance,” Glanzer told Nerdist. “We knew the books were widely popular and thought this would appeal to that audience. So it made sense to place the presentation in one of our bigger rooms. We had anticipated a good turnout for the presentation because of the popularity of the books. However, I think what might have been a little surprise was the enthusiasm of the audience.”

That excess of enthusiasm established what would become one of the most integral parts of SDCC: fans queuing up outside of Hall H to get into the panels. “We had presentations in the past that were eagerly anticipated,” Glanzer shared. “But I don’t believe we had instances of people lining up as early to try to secure seats at the front of the hall.” It’s hard to imagine a San Diego Comic-Con that doesn’t feature hundreds of super-fans camping outside the flagship exhibition hall. But without Twilight and the power of the young female fandom that may never have become such a regular and recognized part of SDCC tradition.

In the annals of Comic-Con history the impact of the Twilight panel is often left out. But to Glanzer it represents one of the most important parts of what makes SDCC so special. “I believe it really speaks to the wide variety of interests of the Comic-Con fans,” Glanzer pondered. “Comic-Con has always been a meeting place for diverse interests and Twilight was a good example. In addition to comics and related popular art, we have a great many fans of science fiction, fantasy, video games, and the like. The enthusiasm showed us that when fans are truly excited about a project, they have no reservations in letting the public know.”

Though Glanzer couldn’t draw a direct link between the Twilight panel and the way studios promoted and presented films at the convention in the years later, he did have thoughts on how the turnout represented the appealing diversity of content that makes the show stand out. “Comic-Con has long had a diverse attendee base. In addition to genre-related interests, many attendees are also budding filmmakers, costumers, designers, writers for books, film and television, and have interests in a variety of popular arts areas.” Glanzer noted one thing the Twilight panel did teach the studios: “The enthusiasm of this audience showed studios that a great presentation can lead to a great response.”

The watershed moment for Hall H contributed to what Glanzer sees as the organic evolution of the convention and its presentations. “There has always been a natural progression in how the panels and programs are presented and received,” he said. “Like I mentioned, Lucasfilm came to Comic-Con in 1976 and that program featured a slide presentation on Star Wars. As time has moved forward so too has technology. And I think that continues to today.”

We asked Glanzer if he had any thoughts about Twilight’s wider impact on Comic-Con. He shared this lovely thought that sums up exactly what we love (and miss) about SDCC: “I think it is important to realize that Comic-Con is an organization that celebrates and promotes comics and related popular art. There is potentially something for everyone. And, conversely, not all things are going to appeal to all persons. But I believe it is the diversity, that ability to choose what you want to take part in, that makes our event so great.”

DC FanDome Split into Two Separate Events https://nerdist.com/article/dc-fandome-digital-event/ Wed, 19 Aug 2020 15:00:53 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=726525 Warner Bros has announced DC FanDome, a digital event set to launch in August in lieu of San Diego Comic-Con.

The post DC FanDome Split into Two Separate Events appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Update, 8/19/20:

Warner Bros. and DC Comics announced on Wednesday that DC FanDome will now be split between two days: August 22nd and September 12th. They state the decision is in response to fans wanting more time to take in all the content. So, August 22nd will be reserved strictly for Hall of Heroes content (which you can view on this schedule). It’s basically all the “big” DCEU panels. Then content on all the other “islands” will run on September 12th.

Original post:

The coronavirus pandemic has pulled the rug out from under the entertainment world, forcing movie studios to push their top-dollar prospects back to 2021 (or further) or relegate them to the substantially less profitable digital release. (Or, in the case of Tenet, continuously put off the inevitable and hope that everything will turn out okay.) Naturally, it isn’t film releases alone affected by the demands of social distancing, but entertainment-centric events, the biggest of which being San Diego Comic-Con. In April, it was announced that SDCC would be a no-go in 2020—a move that forced fans to replace their inevitable summer highlight, and studios to figure out how best to sell their (now more distantly) forthcoming franchises. On Tuesday, Warner Bros, the home of DC Comics’ cinematic output, became the first studio to publicize its game plan for a year without Con: a digital event dubbed DC FanDome.

DC FanDome hub, featuring space islands representing different DC channels (YouVerse, KidsVerse, InsiderVerse, WatchVerse, FunVerse, and Hall of Heroes)

Warner Bros

Beginning on the morning of August 22 and lasting for 24 hours, DCFanDome.com will serve as the hub for what’s being touted as a virtual answer to fan conventions. The event’s press release suggests that visitors will meet new announcements and material for Warner Bros’ upcoming DC slate, name-checking the following properties: Aquaman, Matt Reeves’ The Batman, Batwoman, Black Adam, Black Lightning, DC Super Hero GirlsDoom Patrol, The Flash, Harley Quinn, Legends of Tomorrow, Lucifer, Pennyworth, SHAZAM!, Stargirl, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, Supergirl, Superman & Lois, Teen Titans GO!, Titans, Watchmen, Young Justice: Outsiders, and Wonder Woman 1984, and, invariably, the “Snyder Cut.”

Warner Bros

The differences between DC FanDome and the convention experience as it has manifested over the years don’t need much spelling out. A plus: This thing’s free, and accessible via internet internationally. A minus: the muting of the social experience of watching new footage with crowds of fans and chatting about favored properties on line for the next panel. (And that’s not even mentioning the cosplay.) There’s no clear definition yet of how interactive FanDome will be, though we have to assume there will be less of an opportunity to ask inane questions of your caught-off-guard idols, or sit through the like waged by enterprising strangers.

But what we’re most interested in this juncture is how the isolated digital platform will change Warner Bros’ and DC’s would-be engagement with the experience. Namely: Will the absence of competing brands deflate the motivation to excite fans with thrilling new footage (if any is available, given nigh across-the-board halt to film production) and star involvement? What’s more, will powerhouses like Disney and Marvel follow suit? These are untested waters in big-game marketing, and we fans just wide-eyed pioneers.

Marvel’s X-Men comics had quite a mutation last summer, if you’ll pardon the expression. With Jonathan Hickman’s House of X and Powers of X mini-series, the world of Marvel’s mutants turned upside down, as former enemies joined forces to create the ultimate mutant homeland on the living island of Krakoa.

As a way of celebrating this new era for Charles Xavier’s former students, the good folks at Mondo are unleashing a whole new wave of posters, pins, and more as part of this year’s Comic-Con@Home. There are three posters in total, with a pair of variants, for a total of five poster images. Additionally, the collection includes six enamel pins and a slip mat with the new X-Men logo.

These are all available starting Sunday, July 26 at mondoshop.com/comic-con. You can check out Mondo’s X-Men themed Comic-Con@home offerings below:

Ahead of their season two premiere on September 4th, Amazon Studios announced that it has officially ordered a third season of The Boys. Like the first two seasons, Amazon is co-producing the series with Sony Pictures Television. Producers Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and showrunner Eric Kripke are once again on board. They shared the news on Thursday during The Boys Comic-Con@Home Panel.

Amazon also revealed that Emmy Award-winning Aisha Tyler will serve as host and executive producer of the official The Boys aftershow Prime Rewind: Inside The Boys. In each episode of Prime Rewind: Inside The Boys, members of the cast, creative team and other special guests will join Tyler as they dissect the events that unfold in each episode. The aftershow starts with the upcoming second season.

Hughie, Butcher, and friends look confused

Amazon Studios

In a statement, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke said “The writers and I are hard at work in the (virtual) writer’s room and we’re sad to say, the world has given us way too much material. We hope to be shooting in early 2021, but that’s up to a microscopic virus. As if that wasn’t enough, we’re bringing you a Season 2 after show, Prime Rewind: Inside The Boys. Double entendre intended. Hosted by the incomparable Aisha Tyler and guest starring the cast and crew, it’s a deep dive into how we make this insane thing. Seriously, thanks to Sony, Amazon and the fans. We love making this show so much, and we’re thrilled we get to make more.”

Homelander and Queen Maeve wave from above

Amazon Studios

The Boys is unlike any other superhero show on TV at the moment. The original comic book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson ran for six years and 72 issues, so there are definitely several seasons worth of stories to mine from the source material. Given how much fans have embraced the series, we think we will be seeing far more of this twisted superhero universe for many more years to come.

THE NEW MUTANTS Shares Opening Scene at SDCC Panel https://nerdist.com/article/the-new-mutants-opening-scene/ Thu, 23 Jul 2020 21:50:53 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=737310 Despite several delays, Comic-Con's New Mutants panel showed fans the opening sequence from the film in an extended clip.

Originally part of Twentieth Century Fox’s X universe, The New Mutants was supposed to come out in 2018. That’s even before Avengers: Infinity War. But the Disney/Fox merger threw a monkey wrench into those plans. The New Mutants went through release date after release date, with Disney committed to a theatrical release. The latest theatrical release date was August 28… And it seems Disney is still sticking to that date, somehow. As part of this year’s Comic-Con @ Home however, the cast of The New Mutants came together for a special panel. While they didn’t announce a streaming date, they did give fans an extended clip.

On hand were Maisie Williams (Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane); Anya Taylor-Joy (Illyana Rasputin/Magik); Charlie Heaton (Sam Guthrie/Cannonball); Alice Braga, Blu Hunt (Danielle Moonstar/Mirage); Henry Zaga (Roberto da Costa/Sunspot); and director Josh Boone. Moderating the event was Ira Madison. The panel made light of the many, many release date changes. One cool thing fans got to see is the film’s opening. You can view above starting at around the 24 minute mark.

The NEW MUTANTS Shares New Clip at Comic-Con Panel_1

Comic-Con International

The official description of The New Mutants describes it as “an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.”

Director Josh Boone describes the film as a mix of superheroics and horror, and that is very evident from the clip at the panel. The storyline for his film largely draws from writer Chris Claremont’s “Demon Bear Saga,” from his New Mutants comic book run in the ’80s.

All we know is that by the time the New Mutants finally hits theaters (or streaming), they are probably going to need to be renamed the Old Mutants!

19 Comic-Con at Home Panels You Should Watch https://nerdist.com/article/san-diego-comic-con-at-home-panels-to-watch-2020/ Thu, 16 Jul 2020 23:24:17 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=735897 San Diego Comic-Con is taking a different approach for 2020 with Comic-Con@Home. They have over 350 panels, but you should prioritize these 19.

San Diego Comic-Con will be a virtual experience for the first time ever. The spread of COVID-19 means the splashy pop culture event can’t happen in person. So, the convention organizers adapted and came up with Comic-Con@Home. They moved hours and hours of programming that would normally happen in places like Hall H and Ballroom 20 to YouTube. You won’t have to stand in line for hours to see these panels. Actually, attendees don’t even need a badge or to register in any way. All you have to do is decide which panels you want to see and click the corresponding YouTube link. The panels will air on YouTube at the designated time.

Though it’s not the same as hauling yourself, your tired legs, and all the purchases you swore you wouldn’t make across the San Diego Convention Center, running into friends along the way, it’s certainly the easiest Comic-Con experience I can imagine.

Comic-Con@Home takes place Wednesday, July 22 through Sunday, July 26 and has over 350 panels on the schedule. While I recommend taking some time to peruse that schedule to make your own list, I also have 19 panels to highlight for you. If Comic-Con at Home shared the YouTube URL for the panel already, the panel name is linked. You can bookmark it and open when it’s panel time. If there’s no URL just yet, visit the Comic-Con@Home schedule to find it.

Which panels are on your list? Let us know in the comments.

WYNONNA EARP’s Long Awaited Season 4 Trailer is Here https://nerdist.com/article/wynonna-earp-season-4-trailer/ Fri, 26 Jun 2020 23:29:30 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=730433 After two years, cult series Wynonna Earp is making its long awaited return. Syfy has a brand new trailer for season 4, premiering in July.

The post WYNONNA EARP’s Long Awaited Season 4 Trailer is Here appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Attention, Wynonna Earp fans. We’ve got some good news, and some bad news for you. The good news first: The wait will soon be over, as we’ve learned (via Entertainment Weekly) that the cult Syfy series will return for its fourth season on July 26th. Now for the bad news. Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, filming on the most recent season had to come to a halt prematurely. Sadly, there are only six episodes in the season due to this. When possible, production will resume in Canada; Syfy will premiere the rest of the season at a later date.

In the meantime however, Syfy has released a new trailer for the upcoming season. One which acknowledges the lengths the passionate fanbase has gone to make sure the series came back. You you can watch the full trailer down below:

The delay is a bit of a blow for Wynonna Earp fandom, as they’ve already had to wait forever since the end of season three. The last new episode for the series aired way back in September of 2018. After that, the show’s future was in doubt. Several different financial obstacles arose between the show’s production company and the owner of the property, IDW Entertainment. But now those hurdles are behind them, and it’s game on once again for Wynonna and company.

Wynonna Earp

Syfy

This newest season will find Wynonna going up against her most formidable adversary so far in the series, due to the Earp family curse finally broken. And she is facing these challenges without her infamous gun, Peacemaker. According to the cast, this new season will be something of a love story, although how exactly that will play out, and between whom, is still a mystery. And although San Diego Comic-Con is canceled, the cast will still headline a virtual panel right before the season premiere, as part of Comic-Con@Home.

Wynonna Earp returns on July 26 at 10 p.m. ET on Syfy.

San Diego Comic-Con Cancelled Due to COVID-19 https://nerdist.com/article/san-diego-comic-con-canceled-coronavirus-sdcc/ Fri, 17 Apr 2020 17:24:34 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=709748 San Diego Comic-Con, the biggest convention on Earth has been cancelled due to the coronavirus.

It was a near inevitability, but it’s finally been confirmed: San Diego Comic-Con has been cancelled in light of the current COVID-19 crisis. On a statement on the official Comic-Con website today the non-profit organization announced the show would return next year.

A crowded San Diego Comic-Con aisle

In the statement the organization explained their decision. “For the first time in its 50-year history San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC), the organizers behind the annual pop culture celebration, announced today with deep regret that there will be no Comic-Con in 2020. The event will instead return to the San Diego Convention Center from July 22-25, 2021.”

They continued, “Recognizing that countless attendees save and plan for its conventions each year, and how many exhibitors and stakeholders rely upon its events for a major portion of their livelihood, they had hoped to delay this decision in anticipation that COVID-19 concerns might lessen by summer. Continuous monitoring of health advisories and recent statements by the Governor of California have made it clear that it would not be safe to move forward with plans for this year.”

Marvel, Nerdist

This is the right decision, but it’s obviously a huge blow to fans around the world who were still holding out hope that the show might go on. It’s also a blow to the local San Diego economy to lose tens of thousands of visitors. SDCC has been the single biggest date in entertainment, comics, and pop culture for decades. It’s only become more important as comic book movies have taken over the box office.

Though there are exceptions, Comic-Con is where big studios reveal their biggest news. Companies like Marvel and DC Comics share their long term movie plans. Aside from that, it’s also home to thousands of creators who make a large part of their living from exhibiting at the gargantuan show with over 130,000 attendees.

We’ll miss being at San Diego Comic-Con with you all this year, but it’s the right decision. We’re proud of the organizers for making this tough choice. They’re keeping the safety of fans, actors, creators, and artists at the forefront of their minds.

How The Coronavirus Outbreak Could Affect Comic-Con 2020 https://nerdist.com/article/coronavirus-comic-con/ Tue, 03 Mar 2020 23:47:25 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=694995 Major events like San Diego Comic-Con could be affected by the coronavirus outbreak. Here's how to prevent yourself from spreading the disease.

The post How The Coronavirus Outbreak Could Affect Comic-Con 2020 appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

The world is currently in crisis mode due to the coronavirus pandemic. The disease, also known as COVID-19, started in China and has rapidly spread through the world. Though worthy of concern, misinformation is escalating panic, when there are legitimate and medically backed ways to deal with the outbreak. Unfortunately, that means the cancellation of events that draw large crowds. SXSW is officially canceled, Emerald City Comic-Con is postponed, and the future of San Diego Comic-Con is up in the air.

The New York premiere of the DC animated movie Superman: Red Son was also recently canceled due to the potential threat of the virus, along with the London press event for the European launch of Disney+. Tourist attractions like the Louvre in Paris, as well as Universal Studios Japan and Tokyo Disneyland, are also temporarily shuttering. Additionally, many sporting events are canceled or enforcing audience restrictions, St. Patrick’s Day parades around the world are holding off, schools and conferences are shutting down, and even game shows like Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune will film without a live studio audience.

Oh, and the entire country of Italy is temporarily quarantined, the first time in history an entire country has made such a move to prevent the spread of disease.

Depending on how the coronavirus pandemic shakes out, several major events are at risk of being postponed or outright canceled. The future of the summer Olympics is in question, and local gatherings like WonderCon–which happens next month and is still on for now–and San Diego Comic-Con could be affected.

If you’re planning to attend any of these events and are concerned about a possible outbreak, here are some quick facts about the virus to keep in mind, as well as ways to keep yourself safe and warning signs to look out for:

• According to the Center for Disease Control, common symptoms of the coronavirus include fever, coughing, shortness of breath, and cold/flu-like symptoms.

• If you have a pre-existing condition, it’s important to stay home.

• If you are exhibiting symptoms or have traveled to a place with an outbreak, you should also stay home. Do not risk the health of others.

• Washing your hands regularly and thoroughly is a great way of preventing the spread of the disease. Make sure you wash for a minimum of 15 to 20 seconds.

• Avoid touching your face as much as possible. Mucus membranes are an easy way to contract the coronavirus.

• You should also avoid unnecessary contact with people. (Handshakes, hugs, etc.)

• If you cough or sneeze, do so into a tissue and promptly discard it, then immediately wash your hands. If you don’t have a tissue, sneeze into the crook of your elbow.

• Don’t share bottles or food with anyone.

The most important thing to do is check in with yourself. If you’re feeling ill in any way prior to an event, don’t risk exposing yourself to more germs or spreading your own. Conventions are fun, but they aren’t worth contracting a preventable disease like the coronavirus. You can always see your favorite celebrities or buy new merchandise at a later date.

Also, don’t panic! The disease only has a 2.3% mortality rate, and mainly effects the elderly. It’s important to keep those most sensitive safe, which means limiting exposure to the virus, but fear and worry isn’t the way to survive a pandemic. Precaution, education, and simple practices will protect us best.

Bionic Arm Lightsaber Is the Epitome of ‘Elegant Weapon’ https://nerdist.com/article/bionic-arm-lightsaber-is-the-epitome-of-elegant-weapon/ Mon, 19 Aug 2019 21:13:58 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=667731 This Star Wars bionic arm lightsaber was donned as part of amputee actor's awesome cosplay.

The post Bionic Arm Lightsaber Is the Epitome of ‘Elegant Weapon’ appeared first on Nerdist.

Learning to use a lightsaber is obviously critical for a Jedi or Sith. A force-sensitive warrior needs to become one with the “elegant weapon,” learning to wield it as if it were simply an extension of her body. But while the idea of the lightsaber being an appendage is a metaphor in most cases, for self-proclaimed “bionic actress” Angel Giuffria, the bodily connection between the plasma sword and the arm that wields it is very real. Even if the lightsaber is not.

Real amputee Jedi?! YES! Me & my bionic partner in crime @eatpraynub (Sith) had fun doing a #StarWars cosplay at #SDCC! I’m absolutely loving wearing my lightsaber attachment for my bionic arm – while trying to safely keep my fingers crossed for an audition for @starwars one day. Wouldn’t it be a cool addition to have actual amputees in the film series since there’s so many amputee characters! I’ve been told I look like #CarrieFisher a few times in my life and told I look like #LukeSkywalker a few times too (arms not face I’m assuming?). Here’s me embracing both sides! Thank you to @eatpraynub & @saber_forge for the saber parts!#AngelGiuffriaCosplay #RepresentationMatters #BionicActress #DiversityAndInclusion #amputee #cosplay #starwarscosplay #jedicosplay

A post shared by Angel Giuffria | Cyborg? (@aannggeellll) on

Giuffria, who’s well known on the internet for having one of the coolest bionic hands ever, donned the bionic light blade as part of her Star Wars cosplay at Comic-Con 2019 in San Diego. She and her “bionic partner in crime” dressed up as Jedi and Sith, with both actors switching out their normal bionic hands for the lightsaber attachments — which are both gorgeous builds clearly made with love and great attention to detail.

But the bionic arm lightsaber is more than an unforgettable piece of cosplay. In an email, Giuffria told Nerdist that she’d love to see the cinematic Star Wars universe incorporate more amputee characters played by amputee actors like herself. Giuffria noted that “as an actor missing my arm, Star Wars has always felt like the right world/franchise/people that would be the ones to say ‘let’s also call in some actors who are actual amputees or people with limb differences to audition for these parts.'”

Regardless of which direction the Star Wars movies head in, we’re certain we’re going to see many more awesome bionic builds from Giuffria and her associated cosplayers and craftspeople. Apparently, the response to the bionic arm lightsaber was a call for a set of General Grievous lightsabers, which are already in the works.

The new Disney+ Loki series has added its first confirmed cast member aside from titular star Tom Hiddleston. According to Variety, actress Sophia Di Martino has joined the cast as a co-star. The British actress has appeared in Channel 4’s Flowers, and the feature film The Darkest Universe. It’s unknown what role she is playing. It could be an all-new character created just for the series, or it could be one with comic book history. Enchantress perhaps? We will have to wait and see.

During Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Kevin Feige brought up Tom Hiddleston to briefly discuss his new Loki series for Disney+.

As we maybe predicted, the Loki series will star the Loki that escapes with the Tesseract in Avengers: Endgame. This means he’s just been “Hulk Smashed” and hasn’t had any of the character development from the subsequent Thor films. That’s…kind of a bummer for anyone hoping Loki would be a good guy.

Kevin Feige also revealed they didn’t have time to discuss Blade, Black Panther 2, Guardians 3, Captain Marvel 2, Fantastic Four, or “mutants.” But are those sequels part of Marvel’s Phase 4, or 5?

Star Wars has arrived at San Diego Comic-Con once more, and with it a new red Sith Trooper that has everyone talking. While this year’s convention is filled with toys, t-shirts, and all sorts of collectables featuring these new red troops, little is still known about who they are or what role they will play in The Rise of Skywalker this December. However, fans in attendance Wednesday evening may have caught a clue– a placard displayed with the costumes at the Star Wars booth, that was quickly removed by the end of the night. Dan breaks down all the details of these mysterious red bois in today’s Nerdist News!

The folks at Mondo always bring fans the coolest retro-style movie posters during convention season, and this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego is no different. For this year’s 50th Annual Comic-Con, they’re celebrating classic films from the ’90s like Jurassic Park and The Sandlot, along with the ’80s animated Transformers film. And as a change of pace, several NASA Apollo mission safety posters from the ’60s featuring the Peanuts characters are also getting loving recreations. Both Peanuts posters feature the artwork from their legendary creator, Charles Schulz.

The SDCC editions will be available at the Mondo booth (#435) during SDCC, and any remaining product will go on sale online at a later date. The exception is the Peanuts posters; the Peanuts variants will be available at the Mondo booth while the Peanuts regular editions will be available at the Peanuts Worldwide booth (#1635). SDCC editions will go on sale at the Mondo booth on various days noted below, and will be available when the convention doors open to the public on that date. If a poster has an online counterpart, it will be available at mondotees.com the same day the SDCC edition is available at the booth.

San Diego Comic-Con is almost upon us which means the internet is full of exclusives, reveals, and other super cool stuff. It’s tough to keep up with everything coming out in the lead up to the biggest pop-culture event on Earth but this morning we spotted something from Warner Bros that was too radical to ignore.

We Love This SDCC Warner Bros Mag with 120 Strong Women_1

Each year some of the prestigious entertainment print mags create special edition issues for the massive convention and this year Warner Bros and TV Guide Magazine has created a set of four covers. Three of the variants feature some of their biggest shows Riverdale, Supernatural and the upcoming Batwoman series, but the fourth is the one that caught our eye. The “Powerhouse women” cover features 120 (at our last count) brilliant women from Warner Bros. shows including both animated and live-action projects.

The official press release mentions just some of the projects that have given a platform to women on the cool cover. “The 100, Arrow, Batwoman, Black Lightning, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Doom Patrol, The Flash, Katy Keene, Krypton, Legacies, Lucifer, Manifest, Pennyworth, Riverdale, Stargirl, Supergirl, Swamp Thing, Titans, Veronica Mars and Roswell, New Mexico, as well as animated series Animaniacs, Be Cool Scooby-Doo!, DC Super Hero Girls, Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz, Harley Quinn, Mike Tyson Mysteries, Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?, Teen Titans GO!, ThunderCats Roar!, Unikitty!, Wacky Races, Yabba Dabba Dinosaurs, Young Justice: Outsiders and Rooster Teeth’s RWBY

We love seeing the women of Riverdale standing alongside the Super Hero Girls, Scooby Doo’s Velma, and Daphne, and The Flash’s Iris West, it feels like a watershed moment when a massive corporation decides to center their female characters for a huge pop culture event like San Diego Comic-Con which has for years (incorrectly) been seen as a male-centric market. We can’t wait to get our hands on one of these collectible covers and celebrate all the incredible women that we get to enjoy on our tv screens every single week. What a time to be alive!

They are two of the most ancient entities in the cosmos, known in the pages of Marvel Comics as the Elders of the Universe. But in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the beings known as the Collector and the Grandmaster also happen to be portrayed by two of our finest (and quirkiest) big screen actors: Benicio del Toro and Jeff Goldblum, respectively. Now, these two brothers are finally getting a pair of Marvel Legends action figures all their own, in a two-pack which fans can purchase for $49.99 at Booth #3329 during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. You can check out images of this cosmic collector’s item down below.

The Collector and The Grandmaster Marvel Legends Exclusive 2-Pack Coming To SDCC_1

MCU fans and collectors can enjoy these 6-inch-scale figures of the Collector and the Grandmaster, inspired by their portrayals in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor: Ragnarok, and, most recently, Avengers: Infinity War. The pair of figures feature premium design, realistic detail, and multiple points of articulation for high pose-ability and display in your Marvel collection. This two-pack includes two figures and four accessories.

The Collector and The Grandmaster Marvel Legends Exclusive 2-Pack Coming To SDCC_2

Fans will soon be able to display Taneleer Tivan and En Dwi Gast (those are the Elder’s real names, don’t ya know) among action figures of “lesser” Marvel beings like Thor and Thanos. Although these two characters have yet to share any screen time together, despite being siblings in the comics, at least they will be able to sit in judgement together of all of the “lesser beings” they have to share shelf space with at your home or in your work cubicle.

Limited quantities of this item may be available at other select conventions in North America, South America, Australia, and Europe, including the EB Games Booth at Fan Expo Canada, and online at HasbroPulse.com following the convention. This item will also be available at select retailers in Asia.

San Diego Comic-Con 2018 is just over a week away, and the team behind Nerdist and Geek & Sundry will be reporting from the show with the latest news and developments. But any fans in San Diego with us will have a chance to catch members of our team at a few panels throughout Comic-Con.

THURSDAY, JULY 19

Starting things off early on Thursday, Leonard Maltin and his daughter, Jessie—hosts of the Maltin on Movies podcast for the Nerdist network—will head to Room 24ABC at 11:30am. This will be your opportunity to finally say “You’re Wrong, Leonard Maltin!” That is literally the name of the panel, and fans and amateur film critics are invited to verbally spar with the Maltins.

Did you know that 2018 marks the 10th anniversary of Star Wars: The Clone Wars? Our Managing Editor and resident Star Wars-ologist, Amy Ratcliffe would never let us forget! Amy will be moderating The Clone Wars 10-Year Anniversary panel on Thursday, July 18 at 11: 45am in Room 6BCF. Lucasfilm animation’s Dave Filoni will also be on the panel, alongside a few currently unannounced guests.

Also on Thursday, you can catch our Editor-in-Chief Rachel Heine as she appears on the “Will You Go to the Dance with Me? How Homecoming Dances and Epic Parties Have Shaped Storytelling” panel. At 3:30pm in Room 24ABC, Sam Maggs and Amy S. Foster will lead a discussion about parties as “excellent plot devices” alongside panelists Alexandra Monir (Timeless), Camilla Zhang, Rowan Rowden (Dual Wield Studios founder), and our own Rachel.

Geek & Sundry host Satine Phoenix is closing out Thursday with “Representation in Gaming: From the Comic Shop to the Tabletop.” D20 Dames co-host Jen Vaughn and Christina “Steenz” Stewart are going to talk about the importance of representation in the nerd community of gamers alongside artists Max Bare and Shing Yin Khor, and writer Josh Trujillo. You can catch this panel at 7pm in Room 32AB.

FRIDAY, JULY 20

Friday is a very big day for us at SDCC. Associate Editor Kyle Anderson will be moderating the Dreamworks Voltron Legendary Defender season seven panel with cast members Rhys Darby and Bex Taylor Klaus, executive producers Joaquim Dos Santos and Lauren Montgomery, and story editor Josh Hamilton. That panel is kicking off at 10:15am in Room 6BCF.

Amy Ratcliffe is on another Star Wars panel at 2pm in Room 7AB. This time, she’ll be joining Disney-Lucasfilm Publishing Michael Siglain and other panelists for “Stories from a Galaxy Far, Far Away!” If there’s any Star Wars publishing news to be announced, this is where it will happen.

Dani Fernandez is representing Team Nerdist at the “Geek Podcasting and You!” panel at 4pm in the Neil Morgan Auditorium at San Diego Central Library. Michelle Nguyen Bradley will lead the panel as they talk about nerdy podcasts with Ify Nwadiwe, Emma Fyffe, and Matt Acevedo.

SATURDAY, JULY 21

Saturday is a little bit slower, but no less important. Nerdist writer Rosie Knight is moderating “Comics Are for Everyone… Aren’t They?” at 10am in Room 4 to tackle the subjects of inclusivity regarding people of color, gender, and disabilities within the realm of comics. She’ll be joined by panelists John Jennings, Jaz Joyner, Kat Overland, and Mark Martinez.

Rosie will also be a guest on the “Judge Dredd: Supercop or Satire?” panel at 6:30pm in Room 8, as she tackles Mega-City One’s iconic character alongside Judge Dredd: Under Siege writer Mark Russell, Rise of the Black Panther writer Evan Narcisse and CBR reporter Meg Downey.

Where You Can Find Nerdist and Geek & Sundry at Comic-Con 2018_3

Also at 6:30pm, the wildly popular cast of Critical Role will assemble in Room 6BCF for “Talks Machina with Critical Role.” Talks Machina host Brian W. Foster will welcome Matthew Mercer, Marisha Ray, Liam O’Brien, Sam Riegel, and Taliesin Jaffe to answer as many questions as possible.

SUNDAY, JULY 22

One of our last panels of the year is “Geek & Sundry: Welcome to the Wednesday Club.” This is the first time we’ve brought Wednesday Club to SDCC, and you’ll be able to see it live at 1pm in Room 7AB as Taliesin Jaffe, Amy Dallen, and Matt Key go over the big comic news of Comic-Con and this year’s Eisner Award-winning creators and books.

Where You Can Find Nerdist and Geek & Sundry at Comic-Con 2018_4

You know, we just couldn’t leave Comic-Con without a Bizarre States panel. Jessica Chobot, Andrew Bowser, and a mystery panelist will be bringing Bizarre States to Room 7AB at 2pm on the final day of the con. Expect things to get weird, because they always do.

If you can’t make any of those panels, then you can probably find us at Nerdist House at Sparks Gallery, where we will be running a number of live shows throughout Comic-Con. You can find the full Nerdist House schedule here.

Will we see you at SDCC? Sound off in the comment section below!

RICK AND MORTY Fans Get POCKET MORTYS Plush Exclusives For Comic-Con https://nerdist.com/article/rick-and-morty-pocket-mortys-plush-exclusives-comic-con/ Sun, 01 Jul 2018 19:11:45 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=600228 The post RICK AND MORTY Fans Get POCKET MORTYS Plush Exclusives For Comic-Con appeared first on Nerdist.

If Rick and Morty fans are coming to Comic-Con for special exclusives, then they’re in for some treats. Funko has previously unveiled its Western Rick and Morty Pop figures as well as a “Goodbye Moonmen” vinyl as their exclusives for the year. Now, Symbiote Studios has revealed a pair of Rick and Morty exclusives of their own: two plush Mortys that are based on the mobile game Rick and Morty: Pocket Mortys.

The thing to keep in mind is that Pocket Mortys tasks players with finding and collecting the various Mortys of the multiverse. It’s basically an enjoyable Pokemon Go parody. The first SDCC exclusive plush is Super Rick Fan Morty, and as his name suggests, this Morty really wears his Rick on his head and his shirt. He even comes with a plush Rick toy of his own.

The second Pocket Mortys exclusive hails from a world where Morty must really like cats. This is Two Cat Morty, and his plush feline companions have rewarded his affection by scratching his face and tearing his shirt. Maybe Morty would have better luck if he held a single cat with two arms. As anyone who has ever owned a feline can attest, cats will let you know when they don’t want to be held. And they speak with their claws and their teeth.

Two Cat Morty and Super Rick Fan Morty will both be available at the Symbiote Studios booth during Comic-Con. They are also available for purchase on Symbiote’s official site. The price has been set at $29.99 each.

What do you think about these Pocket Mortys exclusive plush collectibles? Let us know in the comment section below!

Robotic lions are awesome. This is a fact of life, nature, and of cartoons. Multiply that by 400 if those robot lions combine to form an even bigger, more powerful robot. And if you yourself are the one who gets to build and combine all of them? WHAAAA?! Voltron has been a favorite of mech-loving animation fans since the 1980s, and the current Netflix series Voltron: Legendary Defender is low-key one of the best series on television. To celebrate all things Voltron, an official LEGO Idea has been greenlit for a full set of five combinable lions, and will make its debut at San Diego Comic-Con!

Ohhh sweet, sweet nectar. We first told you about this LEGO Idea submission close to a year ago, and in that time, the classic ’80s Voltron set has gotten through all the necessary stages to reach consumers, joining the likes of Doctor Who‘s TARDIS and Ghostbusters‘ ECTO-1 as projects that began in the mind of fan designers.

The Voltron set features 2,321 pieces and consists of all five individual lions, which can be built and posed separately or combined into the full Voltron robot (and, come on, you’re gonna want to display that bad boy all together). The Black Lion measures six inches tall while the other four lions are about three inches high apiece. All together, Voltron is 15″ with a sword of 11″ and a shield of 6″ in diameter. It’s a really nice looking set, as you can see from all the photos below.

The set will run you $179.99 and will be available August 1, but if you happen to be at San Diego Comic-Con next month, a limited number will be available there to pick up.

This is one of the coolest sets on offer in a long time, and you can’t hope to defend the universe any better way. Will you be “lion” in wait once they hit retail? Let us know in comments.

HE-MAN’s Laughing Prince Adam Becomes a Comic-Con Exclusive Figure https://nerdist.com/article/he-mans-laughing-prince-adam-becomes-a-comic-con-exclusive-figure/ Tue, 26 Jun 2018 19:08:57 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=599181 The post HE-MAN’s Laughing Prince Adam Becomes a Comic-Con Exclusive Figure appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Almost a decade ago, a remixed video using clips from the original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe animated series became a viral hit. In the video, He-Man‘s alter ego, Prince Adam, performed a cover of 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up?”, which led to the “Laughing Prince Adam” meme. At this year’s Comic-Con, Super7 is immortalizing that meme as an exclusive figure.

The Laughing Prince Adam action figure features a new head sculpt that recaptures the endlessly looped expression of joy. Adam is also getting a new pink power sword and rainbow glitter packaging. To get this figure, fans will have to venture away from the San Diego Convention Center and visit the Hordak’s Lair pop-up store at 701 8th Avenue. Hordak’s Lair will only be open on Wednesday, July 18 and Thursday, July 19, so expect to see long lines if you want to pick this one up.

YouTube user ProtoOfSnagem posted this video back in 2010, and it’s racked up almost 140,000,000 views. However, it was originally created in 2005 by a group of animators going by the name “Slackcircus.” You can find Slackcircus’ video, which has also has a breakdown on the history of the meme, here. Amazingly, the original video only has 1.7 million viewers since it was posted on YouTube in 2007.

It’s currently unknown if Super7 plans to release the Laughing Prince Adam figure after Comic-Con, but we suspect it will show up again at some point.

Are you going to brave the Comic-Con lines to pick up Laughing Prince Adam? Let us know what’s going on in the comment section below!

Anakin Meets Thrawn On The SDCC Exclusive THRAWN: ALLIANCES Cover https://nerdist.com/article/star-wars-thrawn-alliances-anakin-skywalker-cover/ Mon, 25 Jun 2018 23:36:50 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=598979 The post Anakin Meets Thrawn On The SDCC Exclusive THRAWN: ALLIANCES Cover appeared first on Nerdist.

Star Wars makes it easy to love its villains. They’re complex, complicated characters who are willing to do whatever it takes to fulfill the Emperor’s vision of the galaxy far, far away. Two characters, Darth Vader and Thrawn, are particularly beloved because they fit that description to a T-47 airspeeder…and also because they’re marvelously ruthless. Thanks to Del Rey, their paths are going to cross this July in the newest novel by Timothy Zahn, Thrawn: Alliances.

On Twitter, Del Rey revealed an exclusive cover that will be available for the lucky San Diego Comic-Con attendees who can get their hands on a book at their booth this year:

When Vader and Thrawn meet for the first time in the upcoming book, it will be as General Anakin Skywalker of the Republic and Commander Mitth’raw’nuruodo of the Expansionary Defense Fleet. In the SDCC exclusive cover, Anakin is wearing light armor that should look familiar to fans of the animated series The Clone Wars–but this is the first time we’ve gotten an official, tantalizing taste of what it would actually look like on Hayden Christensen.

We shared a first look at the highly anticipated novel earlier this year, and StarWars.com is back again with another exclusive sneak peek and audio clip from Thrawn: Alliances. It teases the uneasy partnership between the two, one an impulsive Jedi whose actions are guided by emotions, and the other a cool and calculating outsider who always seems to have the upper hand in any conversation.

The two will cross paths again, but years later as Darth Vader and Grand Admiral Thrawn, and their partnership will be put to the test as they join forces to face a powerful enemy.

Thrawn: Alliances will be available on July 24, 2018.

Do you think Thrawn and Vader make an unbeatable team? Tell us why in the comments.

Voltron: Legendary Defender is consistently one of the best shows on TV, with adventure, heart, thrills, huge laughs, and a big ol’ robot made of lions. With the recently dropped sixth season, the series hit another high mark with the gang finally realizing Prince Lotor’s true machinations, and a new realization of where they have to go next. Those seven episodes were so good it was almost a shame to finish them. When will season seven hit Netflix!? Well, if you happen to be going to San Diego Comic-Con in July, the Voltron panel will give fans a sneak peak of the next season premiere!

STAR WARS Concept Yoda Becomes a Comic-Con Exclusive https://nerdist.com/article/star-wars-concept-yoda-becomes-a-comic-con-exclusive/ Mon, 18 Jun 2018 19:43:54 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=597751 The post STAR WARS Concept Yoda Becomes a Comic-Con Exclusive appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

People sometimes describe Star WarsYoda as a Muppet, but he could have been a lot more Muppet-like. Conceived as a science-fantasy take on the archetype of the wise old martial-arts master, his design began humanoid and gradually went through stages that evolved him into something stranger, more alien, and ultimately easier to love. The closer puppets get to humans, the more likely they are to have a bit of an “uncanny valley” effect in three-dimensional motion.

But take a good look at this early concept, now immortalized in a bust by Gentle Giant, and you see the start of several ideas that wound up going in other directions. Labyrinth‘s Hoggle and The Dark Crystal‘s Gelflings, for example, look to share some DNA with this green guy. And Mel Brooks definitely got some Yogurt inspiration.

The concept Yoda is a San Diego Comic-Con International exclusive, limited to 750 pieces (i.e. if you want one, go line up at GG’s booth before you do anything else) and costing $100. However, a handful are available to current members of the company’s Premier Guild premium membership, with platinum-level members having access right now, gold-level getting it starting at 9:30AM Pacific on Tuesday, June 18, and all guild members starting 9:30AM PT on Wednesday at Gentlegiantltd.com.

Check out some more pics of this alternate-universe Jedi master below. And should you decide you’ve gotta have one, may the Force be with you.

Do you like this different spin on a classic? And how do you think Dave Filoni will inevitably find a way to work him in to the new canon as a totally different character? Let us know in comments.

Martin will be attending a panel for the television adaptation of his 1980 novella Nightflyersalong with executive producers Jeff Buhler and Gene Klein and star Jodie Turner-Smith. We’re looking forward to hearing more about Martin’s venture in the sci-fi genre.Lucifer

With the show recently being picked up by Netflix for a fourth season, Lucifer coming to SDCC feels almost like a celebration. We know that some of the cast and crew will be there, but the details of what they’ll be presenting are still unclear. Regardless, we’re looking forward to seeing them and celebrating their return!

Krypton

Another show from Syfy, Kryptonis making an appearance as well. The network just renewed it for a second season, and fans are eagerly awaiting more news of the story’s continuation.

DC Films

We hadn’t heard any news on whether DC would be returning until Aquaman director James Wan tweeted that the first trailer would be revealed at SDCC. Now that we know that DC is coming, some other projects to look out for are Lego Movie 2, the next Fantasic Beasts installment, Godzilla: King of Monsters, and Mowgli.

Wonder Woman 1984

Along with her fellow member of the Justice League, Wonder Woman is said to be coming to Hall H. Gal Gadot will not only be making a surprise appearance, but it’s reported that there will be a sneak preview of the new film Wonder Woman 1984. Because it’s set to release on November 1, 2019, the movie is only a few weeks into production, so we’re not expecting anything too big. Even so, we’re dying for more info, so this gives us something else to look forward to!

The Walking Dead Panel

Although we don’t have a ton of information yet on The Walking Dead‘s upcoming season, we do know that it will have a panel, which has basically become an annual tradition at this point. The show will most likely be premiering its ninth season later this year, and it’s supposedly the final season for stars Lauren Cohan and Andrew Lincoln.

Castle Rock Panel

Castle Rock is Hulu’s adaptation of a variety of Stephen King’s works, and will be produced by J.J. Abrams. In other words, it has all of the ingredients it needs to be a hit. We’re looking forward to seeing the project at its panel, which will include a screening of the pilot. There will also be appearances from the show’s cast, including Sissy Spacek, Bill Skarsgard, and Melanie Lynskey. The panel will be on Friday, July 20 from 12:45-2:00 pm in Ballroom 20.

Glass and Halloween Reboot

We learned back in April that Blumhouse has two big upcoming projects: M. Night Shyamalan‘s Glass, a sequel to his films Unbreakable and Split, and a reboot of the classic horror flick Halloween. We don’t have any more details about what they will be showing or who will be there quite yet, but it’s rumored that Shyamalan, producer Jason Blum, and various members of the casts could make appearances in Hall H.

Mr. Mercedes Panel

Another adaptation of Stephen King’s work, Mr. Mercedes, will be making an appearance. We know there will be a panel about the show’s upcoming second season featuring some of the cast and creators on Thursday, July 19 from 8:00-9:00 pm in room 7AB, as well as the “Mr. Mercedes Immersive Experience,” which will include an augmented reality adventure game, a virtual reality escape room, a presentation from the show’s set designers, a 3D light projection, a photo-op, and a private screening of the show. Sounds like some pretty cool stuff to us!

The 100

The fan-favorite show is entering its fifth season, and its first episode, titled “The Dark Year,” will be screening at Comic-Con a week before it premieres on live TV. This will be on Wednesday, July 18 between 6:00-10:00 pm during the Manifest World Premiere and Special Sneak Peek Screenings.

Cast members appearing will include Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Mary Wiseman, Anthony Rapp, Wilson Cruz, Mary Chieffo and Anson Mount, as well as executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin.

And What’s Not

Game of Thrones and Westworld

Neither of the two wildly popular HBO shows will be hosting a panel at SDCC this year. With Westworld‘s second season concluding only a few weeks before the convention, and with Game of Thrones in the middle of producing its heavily safeguarded eighth and final season, it doesn’t look like there will be anything for them to show fans. We’re pretty bummed about the lack of panels, but on the bright side it means that there is more content on the horizon!

Marvel

Yup, you read that right. While Marvel usually dominates at the event, they won’t be making an appearance at SDCC this year. According to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, this is mostly because they’re not planning on announcing any more movies until after Avengers 4 is out. At least we have Captain Marvel, a Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, and Guardians of the Galaxy 3 to look forward to, right?

Mission Impossible–Fallout

The newest entry in the Mission Impossible franchise is hitting theaters July 27, so it will not be making an appearance at SDCC this year.

Be sure to check back—more information is on the way!

We Asked the DUCKTALES Cast What They’d Buy with Scrooge McDuck’s Fortune https://nerdist.com/article/ducktales-cast-interview-scrooge-fortune/ Thu, 17 Aug 2017 18:00:34 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=535169 The post We Asked the DUCKTALES Cast What They’d Buy with Scrooge McDuck’s Fortune appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

What would you do if you had Scrooge McDuck’s fortune at your fingertips? This was the life-altering question I posed to the cast of Disney XD’s excellent DuckTales revival, and like a vibrating motel bed, restless leg syndrome, or a low-grade earthquake, it left them shook.

[brightcove video_id=”5543202711001″ brightcove_account_id=”3653334524001″ brightcove_player_id=”rJs2ZD8x”]

It’s a question that has been on my mind ever since Disney announced it would be reviving the fan favorite DuckTales for a brand new animated series. After diving into a life-size version of Scrooge McDuck’s Money Bin, it was all I could think about. What would you do with all that money, which—by some estimates—equals $65.4 billion? Would you be responsible and pay off your college loans? Would you erect a golden statue in your honor then slather it in caviar? Would you use it to Kickstart a revival of Gummi Bears that the world so desperately needs? The mind boggles at the possibilities of unrestricted, free-market capitalism.

Watch the video above to find out exactly what stars Ben Schwartz (“Dewey”), Danny Pudi (“Huey”), Beck Bennett (“Louie”), Kate Micucci (“Webbigail Vanderquack”), and Toks Olagundoye (“Mrs. Beakley”) would do if that had a McDuckian fortune just burning a hole in their proverbial pocket.

DuckTales airs on Saturdays on Disney XD.

What would you spend a truly insane amount of money on? Let me know in the comments below!

Adam Savage and John Hodgman Went Incognito as Chewbacca Duo at Comic-Con https://nerdist.com/article/adam-savage-and-john-hodgman-went-incognito-as-chewbacca-duo-at-comic-con/ Thu, 27 Jul 2017 14:00:28 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=529583 The post Adam Savage and John Hodgman Went Incognito as Chewbacca Duo at Comic-Con appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Maker extraordinaire Adam Savage and comedian John Hodgman have been buddies for some time now, so during this most recent Comic-Con, Savage decided to fold his friend into his tradition of walking around the SDCC floor in an identity-concealing costume, typically one that he made himself. Hodgman said that was his first time cosplaying, so to make it special, Savage had the pair go as a classic character: Chewbacca, the beloved Star Wars wookie.

“I’m looking forward to not being able to wear my glasses and having all of my peripheral vision robbed from me,” Hodgman said, tongue firmly in cheek, but it turns out that he managed just fine. Once they got all their undergarments, costume components (including “10-inch disco boots”), and raccoon-eyed makeup on, they hit the floor (navigating it just fine) and warmed the hearts of many a Star Wars fan.

Even in elaborate costume, though, Savage always seems to get recognized by at least a couple fans on the Comic-Con floor, and this time was no exception, thanks to a few eagle-eyed enthusiasts who follow him on Twitter. Perhaps they’re also fervent Tested.com fans and remember the video from a few months ago in which Savage created the bandolier he wore:

Check out the video above, which also includes a look at the making of the Chewbacca costume, which was based on Lucasfilm archives, so it’s pretty darn accurate. This is just the latest of Savage’s many Comic-Con floor costumes, so let us know in the comments below which one is your favorite!

CAPTAIN MARVEL Movie Reveals 1990s Setting, Nick Fury, and Villains at Comic-Con https://nerdist.com/article/captain-marvel-movie-reveals-1990s-setting-nick-fury-and-villains-at-comic-con/ Sun, 23 Jul 2017 01:25:54 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=528608 The post CAPTAIN MARVEL Movie Reveals 1990s Setting, Nick Fury, and Villains at Comic-Con appeared first on Nerdist.

Marvel Studios made waves at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con by revealing that Oscar Award-winning actress Brie Larson would be stepping into the cosmic shoes of Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, in the iconic hero’s forthcoming eponymous film. At this year’s Hall H panel, Marvel Studios revealed even more details about the hotly anticipated film, which will be the first female-led film in Marvel’s past decade of making superhero films. In front of a packed audience of thousands of screaming fans, Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige revealed that Captain Marvel will not only take place in the early 1990s, but it will feature the shapeshifting alien race, the Skrulls, as its villains.

https://twitter.com/elmayimbe/status/888927012273795072https://twitter.com/lukeslightsabrs/status/888930693694328832

https://twitter.com/Razzbender/status/888930618255527936

This marks the first appearance of the Skrulls in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and clears up any confusion that the green-skinned aliens were not available to use in Disney’s Marvel movies due to an intellectual property rights entanglement with the Fantastic Four, whose film rights are currently owned by Fox. Whether or not specific characters like Super Skrull are available to appear in MCU films is another story, but longtime Marvel fans will be delighted to see that one of the staples of the Marvel Cosmic Universe will be included on its big screen counterpart.

The film’s 1990s setting won’t just mean loads of frosted tips, unfortunate bangs, and slap bracelets for the film’s stars; it also means we’ll be seeing a younger version of one particularly important Marvel character in particular: Nick Fury. Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role as the shadowy S.H.I.E.L.D. director in Captain Marvel, and will have TWO EYES. That’s right, this version of Fury won’t yet have a reason to wear a jaunty eyepatch, and I’m sure we’ll find out exactly what happened to impact his eyesight by the end of our first foray into Carol Danvers’ world.

Who knew that Ezra Miller was a low key anime fan? The actor who will portray Barry Allen, a.k.a. The Flash, in Warner Bros. Justice League this November got into the San Diego Comic-Con spirit by cosplaying as Edward Elric, the titular character from Hiromu Arakawa’s mega-popular anime and manga series Fullmetal Alchemist.

https://twitter.com/thedceu/status/888836128958144512While it doesn’t look like Miller’s cosplay cost him an arm and a leg, he certainly didn’t skimp on the details. At 5’11”, Miller has a full foot on his cosplay counterpart. (At the outset of the series, Elric is supposed to be approximately 4’11”.) Honestly, the only thing missing is Ben Affleck in a giant suit of armor as Alphonse Elric. Or Gal Gadot as Lust. Or Jason Momoa as Alexander Louis Armstrong. I mean, just look at this GIF and tell me Jason Momoa wouldn’t be perfect.

But this cosplay can’t help but make us wonder, would Miller ever play Elric in an American adaptation of the hit anime and manga series? Probably not because anime adaptations are still a risky proposition in the US market. But considering that Warner Bros. is releasing a live action feature film adaptation of the series in Japan, anything can happen.

How Will THE DARK TOWER TV Series Connect to the Movie? https://nerdist.com/article/the-dark-tower-tv-series-movie-connection-nikolaj-arcel/ Sat, 22 Jul 2017 01:32:12 +0000 http://nerdist20.wpengine.com/?p=528252 The post How Will THE DARK TOWER TV Series Connect to the Movie? appeared first on Nerdist.

The Dark Tower may not be hitting theaters until August but we’ve journeyed to the depths of Mid-World and beyond to bring you the latest details about the hotly anticipated Stephen King adaptation. While at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Nerdist sat down with The Dark Tower director Nikolaj Arcel, who gave us the inside scoop on how the feature film adaptation will tie into the larger world and mythology of Stephen King’s magnum opus.

Arcel revealed which books in the sprawling saga The Dark Tower film will draw from and how they hope to expand the story in a companion TV series, which he is currently writing for and developing. The TV series, which will focus on the younger years of Roland Deschain, will allow the creative team to explore storylines and fan-favorite moments that they simply aren’t able to fit into the 95-minute film.

Speaking of expanding the world of The Dark Tower, no Stephen King adaptation would be complete without a few self-referential Easter eggs. While eagle-eyed fans have already spotted references to beloved characters like Pennywise the clown from It, Arcel revealed that there are loads more in the script, and even hinted at one that’s particularly difficult to find. What movie is it from? How will this burgeoning transmedia universe unfold? Tune into today’s special SDCC edition of Nerdist News to find out!

The Dark Tower opens on August 4, 2017.

What would you like to see from The Dark Tower movie and TV series? Let’s discuss in the comments below.

We continue our journey to our Year of Mental Health with a look at how you can survive conventions. Make sure that you check out Take This Org for more tips, mental health information, and the answers to your questions.

Conventions can be amazing experiences, but they have their pitfalls. Cons are fun, no doubt. We get to see all sorts of wonderful things we enjoy. We might get to meet people we admire or try out new games or products before they even come to market. For some of us, cons are also an opportunity to socialize in an environment where we feel fully accepted for liking what we like. In all those ways, conventions can feel like sanctuaries. Cons are also long, loud, crowded, and energy consuming, and many people feel overwhelmed by this.

One of Take This’ founders refers to something she calls “Everything is Awesome Syndrome”. We want to experience everything we can at a convention. We paid money to be there, after all. Some people actually feel a little guilty when they don’t get all they can out of the experience. That said, if we have to work too hard to see everything, it’s not fun. Plus, we can end up exhausted, overwhelmed, and emotional, which takes more time out of our con. In physical activities, it’s better to stop for a little bit before you injure yourself instead of tearing something and being placed on forced rest for a long time. If you’re still following my logic, taking a little effort and time for self-care is obviously worth it, since it can help us maximize our enjoyment by preventing burn-out later. Cons are a marathon, not a sprint, so we have to find ways to pace ourselves and be healthy along the way.

My Body is…Ready?

Maintaining physical health is crucial at conventions. If you aren’t healthy, you aren’t going enjoy con. Plus, if your immune system is down, you become susceptible to the dreaded… [ominous music plays] Con Crud!

Eat!

At the last convention I attended, I walked about 15,000 steps a day, which averages to approximately 7 ½ miles. Many of my friends and colleagues walked even more. When you ramp up your physical activity, it’s even more important to make sure you’re eating enough. Of course, you should always consult a medical professional or nutritionist if you have questions about your dietary needs, but for me, potato chips and soda don’t usually cut it. I need food with actual – you know – nutrients.

This can be challenging at cons where calorie-heavy, nutritionally-lean junk food abounds. My personal rule is that I have to eat two meals a day that my spouse or my parents would be happy with me eating. If I can imagine them saying, “You need to eat something better,” I have to find better food. This sometimes means I have to plan ahead and bring prepared food with me. It’s worth it, though. Having food at the ready keeps me from getting hangry; I’m an unfocussed pile of snark when I’ve not eaten.

Rest!

You might be chuckling at this. After all, there are parties at night! Friends! Revelry! Shenanigans! That stuff is wonderful – and rest is still important. When people don’t get sleep, their thinking and attention become impaired, as does their ability to tolerate stressors and regulate emotions. Have fun, and also set yourself a curfew so you can get enough sleep. Six hours is the bare minimum most people need to keep going in good form.

The need for rest doesn’t stop at sleep. Brains need breaks, too. Take at least one undisturbed 15-minute break in a quiet spot around mid-morning and another mid-afternoon. If your con is fortunate enough to have a Take This AFK Room, use it! If not, then ask if people know of a quiet spot to sit and do nothing. Most cons have at least one corner that doesn’t get much attention. If not, you can go off-site, or even back to your hotel. Morning showers are also a great way to take a mental break.

It’s Okay to Miss Things

Are you at the con to work, or are you there to have fun? If you paid to be there, you probably don’t want it to feel like work. Remind yourself of this, because you’re not likely to see everything at a major con. If you go in without expecting to experience every single thing the con has to offer, you’re likely to be less stressed about it. Then you can focus on having fun instead of getting anxious about seeing it all. It’s better to leave wanting more than not wanting to come back at all. Think, Firefly.

Know Your Limits and Make a Plan

We all have our limits, and it’s helpful to know what they are. Do you get overwhelmed by being in crowds for too long? Do you struggle with loud noises? Limit your exposure as best you can, and plan for extra breaks. Do you need sleep to function? See above, and set a curfew. It can be hard to say no to things, especially if you feel pressure from friends. Nevertheless, if you know you’re going to hit your limit, stop. Also, bring a backpack filled with your daily essentials like extra water, healthy food, spare deodorant, medications, books or other distractions if you think you’ll need them.

There’s an App for That

Take This recently partnered with Habitica to create mental wellness challenges. If you don’t know Habitica, it’s an app that turns your daily tasks and to-do lists into an RPG. Your character gets experience points for finishing tasks and takes damage at unfinished ones. One of the challenges we created together is called Playing the Long Con. It’s in their Library of Shared Lists and it’s filled with specific, daily tasks for self-care at cons. Give it a shot. It might help you while at con.

What are your tips for having a healthy and fun con? I’m sure you have some of your own, unique ways to maintain your mental and physical well-being. Please share them in the comment section below.

The post Amazing STAR WARS Rancor Cosplay Wins All of Comic-Con 2016 appeared first on Nerdist.

As with almost every Comic-Con, the cosplay at this year’s was totally out of this world. It’s hard to pick a favorite when you have amazing things like Ronald McDonald as Thor, or a squad of pastel colored Wookiees. Having said that, we think we know who won for best cosplay overall at this past weekend’s Comic-Con in San Diego: Jeremy Fisher, a Los Angeles-based animator who spent around $2,000 of his hard earned cash to make a working Rancor suit that pretty much qualifies as the best Star Wars cosplay of all time.

For those few of you out there not on a first name basis with the various creatures in the Star Wars saga, the Rancor was Jabba the Hutt’s killer pet he kept beneath his throne room, which he used to kill off pesky Jedi Knights and his green slave dancer girls who dared to give him attitude. (Well, he tried to use it to kill off Jedi Knights. You’ve all seen Return of the Jedi, so you know how the Rancor’s story ends.)Fisher was able to make this suit over the course of a year with some mottled flesh made from polyfoam, detachable limbs, and most importantly, a few USB-powered fans. Seriously, it’s the most important part—without those he might have passed out, or worse, in the San Diego heat and humidity, giving his cosplaying Rancor-keeper friend, Malakili (Raelynn Esterlina) something to cry about just like in the movie. It would have been this scene all over again.

You can watch Vulture’s video below of Fisher posing with fans in his Rancor cosplay, including a slave Leia (of course) a Harley Quinn (why not?) and one very freaked out looking little kid.

What’s your opinion of this amazing Comic-Con cosplay? Best ever, or just best this year? Let us know your thoughts down below in the comments.

Con season is officially ramping up. While there are LOADS of different conventions you can go to this summer–and all year round, really–there are a few important things that you always need to bring to make sure you’re ready to have an awesome time at your con.

The truth is conventions are a bit nuts. Sometimes they’re packed with people, lines can be long, the reception in the events center or hotel can be crappy, and the food can be expensive. It’s important to make sure you’re ready for a convention environment from the start, which will ensure all of your energy can be spent enjoying the event. To help you get ready for whatever adventures are ahead, I’ve compiled a bit of a convention essentials starter pack. Get ready to make a checklist, kids:

Bottled Water

I’m gonna sound like my mom here, but y’all need to drink more water. Seriously though, bringing water to a convention is incredibly important. While you might be able to track down a water fountain, it isn’t guaranteed to work, and you aren’t guaranteed to not catch mono from the litany of people who grabbed a drink before you. Just sayin’

Snacks

While you can usually find a reasonably priced lunch spot around the convention hall, you’ll likely get peckish if you’re spending an entire day at a con. If you’re not up for paying the high snack prices at the con, pack yourself a quiet, non-greasy, non-smelly snack (seriously, don’t be the guy who packs a tuna sandwich for a snack) that you can eat throughout the con.

Sharpie

You never know who you’ll meet on the con floor. While you won’t need to provide a pen if you’re paying for an autograph, you want to be ready should you come across one of your faves as you’re exploring the hall. Just be sure to be polite when asking for autographs in the wild.

Phone Charger

Seriously. If you plan on using your mobile device at any point, bring your charger. If you have a charger that doesn’t need to be plugged into a wall, even better–because everyone and their mom will be hunting for and using any wall plugs available. But even a traditional wall-plug charger will work great. You’ll be surprised how much juice you use spending a day at a con, trying to live-tweet, meet up with your friends, and snap pics.

Hand Sanitizer

With so many humans mushed into the same spot, the accidental exchange of germs is almost inevitable. It’s not uncommon to catch “con crud” after the convention wraps. Try to avoid getting sick by packing some hand sanitizer. And wash your hands. Please.

Storage

This requires a bit of foresight, but if you’re planning or open to the idea of buying swag at the con, make sure you’ve got a way to carry it around and keep it safe. Whether you’re bringing something as low-key as a bag to keep swag, a tube for a poster, a box for a collectible, or going all in with some wearable storage like the Nerdist Ultimate Convention Hoodie, make sure you have the means to keep whatever you buy with you safe and sound.

A Meeting Spot

Larger conventions can be a bit crazy–in a good way, of course. However, that craziness can mean it’s occasionally tough to get in touch with your friends should you get separated. A phone dies, you can’t hear your phone, poor service, or a litany of other issues could stop you from getting in touch with your buddies. To prevent you having to roam around the con yelling, “I NEED AN ADULT!” designate a spot with you and your group to meet up should you get separated.

A Schedule–with a Plan B

Plan what panels you’d like to attend ahead of time, and make sure you bring your schedule to the convention. Of course, it’s always possible that life will interrupt your plans, so be sure you have a plan B just in case you miss your first choice.

Cash

Having cash on hand is incredibly important. Most vendors at conventions accept a card, but technology is prone to break and nothing is worse than having to pay service fees at an ATM. Plus, if you go into the con with a set amount of cash, it can really help you stick to a budget and not overspend. You may think you’re strong-willed, but it is SO EASY to overspend at the amazing stuff you can buy at a convention.

Emergency Mending Kit and Band-aids

The mending kit mostly pertains to cosplayers. It’s almost inevitable that something on your costume will need a little help. Having a mending kit will help you address any tears while they’re still small. Band-aids are also incredibly helpful for cosplayers or any con-goer in the fight against blisters. It’s so easy for a day of walking to result in several painful blisters, and having a band-aid on hand can stop the situation before it gets rough.

Bonus – Sunscreen

This is especially important if you’re attending a convention like San Diego Comic Con where there are lots of activities to participate in direct sunlight. Nothing ruins a convention faster than accidentally turning yourself into a lobster.

Ultimately, have fun this convention season, but be prepared! What are your con essentials? Let me know in the comments!
