Your Shopify store name is one of the most important pieces of branding you have at your fingertips.

It's what people see when they visit your store and it sets the tone for their entire experience.

But you may not be happy with that name anymore because it doesn't represent who you are or what your store is about anymore.

Luckily for us, changing your Shopify store name in 2024 is super simple, and we have the perfect guide for how to do it. Let's get started!

How do you change your Shopify store name?

So, how do you change the name of your Shopify store?

Follow me below step-by-step on how to change the name of your Shopify store!

In the end, I will also explain to you how to change the domain name of your Shopify store, because what is a new store name without a new domain name, right?

Step 1. Go to your settings page

Step 2. Go to the general settings

At the top of this page, you will find your current store name.

Step 3. Change the name

Now it's time to change the name of your Shopify store.

If you want some help coming up with a perfect name, then I suggest reading this.

Step 4. Check your store

And done!

Now you will see your new name appear on the top (this depends on your theme) of your Shopify store:

Awesome, right?

I do have one thing to add: for some themes, you will need to edit the theme settings as well if you use your store name instead of a logo.

Here's an example of where to do that with the Booster Theme:

But what about changing the domain name of your Shopify store? Let's find that out now!

How do you change the domain name of your Shopify store?

Now that you know how to change the name of your Shopify store, it's time to change your domain name as well!

For example, why would you keep playingwithdogs.com if your new store name is cats and food?

That would be a bit weird for your store visitors!

Keep in mind, one thing that you won't be able to change is your .myshopify.com URL that you use to login.

If you've added a custom domain to your store, like I'll explain to you below, and selected it as your primary domain, then the original .myshopify.com URL is never seen by your store visitors.

You will be the only one who is going to see this URL.

If it's important to you that the .myshopify.com URL matches your new store name, you will need to create a new Shopify account.

There are ways to duplicate your Shopify store so you won't lose anything you have done so far though!

If you want to learn more about duplicating your Shopify store, then I suggest reading this guide from Shopify.

Now let's start with changing your domain name:

Step 1. Purchase a new domain name

You might have already done this, or maybe you haven't yet.

The first step is going to be purchasing a new domain name.

I suggest you use Namecheap as your domain registrar.

Buy a domain at Namecheap

I personally use them as well, and I think they are great (and cheap).

Click here to register your domain name on Namecheap.

Another option is Porkbun. This is a great option if you're looking for a domain registrar with cheaper renewal fees. (Usually, the second year is more expensive than the first year)

Also, I suggest you purchase the .com domain extension of your new store name.

If your domain name is not available but you really like the store name that you came up with, you could try other variations of that name or start brainstorming again.

Another option is to check other domain extensions like .store instead of .com

There's even a chance that you like that domain extension more than the .com version. For example, here's one of the benefits of having a .store domain:

.store domain explanation

Just don't forget to check for any legal issues!

One last tip, don’t forget to search for coupon codes (for example, take a look at Honey). This way you will hopefully pay less for your domain name!

Step 2. Go to domains

All you have to do to connect your domain to Shopify is by going to Online Store (under Sales Channels) -> Domains

Domains in the menu of Shopify

Step 3. Connect your domain

After that, either press connect existing domain, transfer domain, or buy a new domain:

  • Connect existing domain. If you have already bought your domain on, for example, Namecheap, and you want to keep it there, you can connect it to Shopify this way.
Connecting an existing domain
  • Transfer domain. Same as above, but you can choose this if you want to transfer your domain to Shopify instead of keeping it on Namecheap.
  • Buy new domain. This speaks for itself, if you don’t have a domain yet and you don’t want to buy it somewhere else, you can purchase it straight on Shopify.

Step 4. Double-check

Those were all the steps for connecting your new domain name to your Shopify store!

It's important now to double-check your domain and see if it's correctly going to your store.

How do you delete a Shopify store?

If you decide not to change the name of your store but to delete your store instead, follow me below:

Step 1. Go to settings

Shopify settings page

Step 2. Go to plan and permissions

Then scroll down until you see this:

And there you can press on close store!

Or you can pause your store for a while so you can still keep the data, but you will need to keep paying Shopify each month.

But that will cost less than the normal Shopify subscription!

However, with the current situation, they changed a few things: now you can pause your store without paying any monthly fees. The only thing then is that you can't edit anything while your store is paused.

Why do some people change the name of their Shopify store?

Why would people change the name of their Shopify store?

You might be wondering that right now while reading this.

Well, I'll give you a few reasons below, and I think it will make sense then:

  1. Their store isn't working, and they want to start over.
  2. They want to go from a general to a niche store or vice versa, and their current name doesn't fit their new store.
  3. You could also want to change the name of your store because you came up with a better one.
  4. Or you're doing so great that you can purchase an even smaller and catchier domain name and want to change your Shopify name to that as well.

Do you see now that there are plenty of reasons why people might want to change the name of their Shopify store?

Maybe one day (or today), you'll get one of these points as well.

But should you can change the name of your store? Let's find out:

Should you change the name of your Shopify store?

Let's see if you should change the name of your store!

First off, you need to decide which one fits with you:

Does your store get any traffic and sales? Basically, do some people recognize your store name or not?

I don't have much to say about this one.

If you're getting sales and traffic and you think people recognize your store name, then you will need to think this through if you want to change your store name or not.

You need to think about your customers!

How are they going to respond if you're going to change the name of your store?

But more than likely, you're part of this group that wants to change the name of their store:

You're not getting any sales, and want to try something new with a new store name

If so, then it's a great idea to start over.

You can keep all the things that you learned from this store and apply it to your next one!

Make it better and better.

But don't forget that building an online store takes time. Don't change names if you didn't see any sales the first month! (You can check out this article if you're getting lots of traffic but no sales.)

The only thing left to decide now is if you should open a brand new Shopify store, or if you just want to change the name of your store.

For some people, starting over from scratch (opening a new Shopify store) is the better choice because you won't have all the data from your previous store there.

For others, that doesn't matter that much.

Conclusion

So there you have it, everything regarding the name change of your Shopify store!

I covered everything from why some people change the name of their store, to how to change the name and domain name of your store, plus domain names.

I hope these tips will get you through this period of thinking about changing the name of your store!

Don't forget that success takes time. It might take a couple of failures, but most people will get there if they put the effort into it.
