First released in the fall of 1998, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time celebrated its 20th anniversary late last year, which means that yes, you are that old. And so are we. Now, two decades later, the famous single-player game is now a co-operative experience you can share with others thanks to a group of enterprising modders.
The fifth game in Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda series was a major milestone for the franchise thanks to its 3D graphics and memorable storytelling. Considered one of the greatest video games of all time, The Legend of Zelda sold more than 7 million copies worldwide, earned multiple awards, and is still one of the most popular games in the “Speedrun” category on Twitch. It received a remake from the ground up in 2011 for the Nintendo 3DS, but this mod marks the first time that the game has received any sort of multiplayer functionality.
First reported by Kotaku, a group of dedicated modders have transformed Ocarina of Time so the famous single player game can now also be played with another Link with whom to share the adventure. The project first began last year and now you can see exactly what the modders have accomplished in the video above.
This group of hardcore Legend of Zelda fans are committed to transforming the classic game into a multiplayer experience. By running the one game on a dedicated server, players can team up in ways they never could back in the day. Currently, players can only fight against AI-controlled enemies, but the team behind the mod are already looking at finding a way to implement player vs. player combat in the future. In the video above, we can see two players exploring the world of Ocarina of Time simultaenously, and there are plans to allow up to 15 players to play together at once.
