Here is everything we know about their reunion in Deadpool & Wolverine.

After years of speculating, in 2022, Marvel Studios confirmed that Deadpool would officially join the MCU for a third installment of the R-rated comic book franchise at the start of Phase Six, Deadpool & Wolverine. This would mark the first official character of the Fox X-Men universe joining the MCU (although Patrick Stewart as a variant Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness kinda counts too, we suppose).

In a post on his Instagram story, Ryan Reynolds also gave us a closer look at Cassandra Nova’s sling ring. It looks like two infinity stones, the Time Stone and the Reality Stone, might be appended to it. We guess we’ll have to wait and see just how that works.

Deadpool & Wolverine‘s latest teaser trailer brings yet another new Deadpool into the mix. This time it’s Lady Deadpool.

We can’t wait to find out who will be playing this red-clad gal. Additionally, Cowboy Deadpool also makes an appearance.

Here is everything we know so far about Deadpool & Wolverine.

Thanks to a Super Bowl trailer (check it out below!), we know that this film, formerly called Deadpool 3, is actually Deadpool & Wolverine.

Deadpool & Wolverine‘s Plot

The plot of Deadpool & Wolverine remains a mystery. All we know is that Hugh Jackman is returning as Wolverine, and that it takes place before the feral X-Man’s death in Logan. In fact, Jackman has confirmed that time travel will be involved in the threequel in a big way.

While originally, Deadpool & Wolverine was called Deadpool 3, director Shawn Levy wants to make sure fans understand that the title change is not just cosmetic. Levy notes to Screen Rant:

As far as crafting the Deadpool & Wolverine story, I just felt privileged every day because you’re talking about two massive movie stars in their most iconic roles. It also gave me an opportunity. It’s the third Deadpool movie, but it’s not Deadpool 3. It’s a different thing that’s very much Deadpool and Wolverine. And it’s not trying to copycat anything from the first two movies. They were awesome, but this is a two-hander character adventure.

As most folks know by now, Deadpool’s third solo film will reunite him with his X-Men Origins: Wolverine co-star. Deadpool and Wolverine will work together, although they have made it very clear that these two characters “hate each other.” It will not be a love-fest in this story. But the fact that Deadpool & Wolverine is smack in the middle of the Multiverse Saga should give us all a clue as to what’s going to go down, and probable multiversal shenanigans will ensue.

Dogpool, of course, will also star.

Make sure to follow him on Instagram.

We also now know what Deadpool & Wolverine‘s new official logo looks like thanks to a fun poster.

Deadpool & Wolverine will, of course, be the first R-rated movie in the MCU. And that means it’s not pulling any punches. In fact, its latest official synopsis drops two F-bombs. Let’s take a look:

Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake to date—Deadpool & Wolverine. A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. His days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. When his homeworld faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctantlier… reluctanter? Reluctantest? He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to—Fuck. Synopses are so fucking stupid.

We know Hugh Jackman will return, along with the very obvious Ryan Reynolds. Here’s who else we know about: Karan Soni, cab driver Dopinder, Leslie Uggams, Emma Corrin, and Matthew Macfadyen. In exciting news, Morena Baccarin and Stefan Kapicic are reprising their roles as Vanessa and Colossus in Deadpool & Wolverine. So are Rob Delaney’s Peter, Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), and Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio). Jennifer Garner’s Elektra from the 2003 Daredevil Marvel Fox movie is also reported to reprise her role in this MCU film.

Behind the Scenes

Deadpool & Wolverine‘s director for this third outing will be Shawn Levy, most recently known for his work on Stranger Things. This would be a reunion for Levy and Reynolds, as the pair previously worked together on the movie Free Guy. Levy is also known for the time travel movie The Adam Project.

On the writing side of things are Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, writers for the popular animated series Bob’s Burgers. The writers for the first two Deadpool films, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, are also contributing to movie number three’s screenplay, as is Ryan Reynolds himself.

The world was in a much different place when Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, made his comic book debut in The New Mutants in 1990. The first of two Bushes was President, Nirvana had yet to release Nevermind, and the only superheroes who had movies were Superman and Batman. It took many years and a whole lot of writers and artists, but eventually, Deadpool rose the ranks to become a genuine superstar in the vast canon that is the Marvel Universe

Various covers of Deadpool comics.

Today, you can’t walk around the mall (if there’s still one open near you) and not see Deadpool somewhere. The Merc with the Mouth is a serious pop culture icon, his red and black mask plastered onto t-shirts, hoodies, Funko figures, and so much more. With not one, not two, but three theatrical movies under his belt, one could argue Deadpool is as big as Mickey Mouse.

In the world of comic books, dozens of brilliant comics writers have shaped Deadpool into the wisecracking, chimichanga-munching anti-hero we know him to be. While Ryan Reynolds tears up the screen yet again as Deadpool in the new Deadpool & Wolverine, it’s high time to look back at some of the all-time greatest Deadpool comic runs. Whether you’re a completionist looking to curate the perfect library or a newbie still dipping a toe into comics, or someone in between, this list is for you if you need a little Deadpool in your life. (Don’t we all?)

9. Deadpool by Mark Waid

A panel from Mark Waid's Deadpool.
Marvel Comics

Deadpool’s metamorphosis into the wisecracking, fourth wall-breaking mercenary we know him now was a slower evolution than you might think. Revisit his debut in The New Mutants and early X-Force appearances and you’ll find a different Wade Wilson than you know today. This isn’t to say Deadpool wasn’t a blabbermouth back then, but his personality hardly stood out from the other hard-edged mutants he was pitted against. After the mild success of his first solo mini, Deadpool: The Circle Chase by Fabian Nicieza and Joe Madureira, there came a second miniseries that has flown under the radar since its 1994 publication, simply titled Deadpool by writer Mark Waid (with art by Ian Churchill, Jason Temujin Minor, and Bud LaRosa).

While it lasts just four issues, Waid – who was in the midst of a hot streak at the time, with titles like The Flash and later Kingdom Come at DC – strikes a fine balance between dark, edgy machismo with Deadpool’s developing humor. The story isn’t much to write home about; Deadpool’s favorite bar gets wrecked, and so the Merc teams with mutants like Siryn and Banshee for payback all while his healing factor malfunctions. But the visual art is peak ’90s maximalism, combined with a dash of Waid’s belief that Deadpool will get what’s coming to him – or so Waid thought. In a 1997 interview with Wizard, Waid later expressed regret writing the series, saying: “Someone who hasn’t paid for their crimes presents a problem for me.”

8. Hawkeye vs. Deadpool by Gerry Duggan

Hawkeye and Deadpool talk by a car.
Marvel Comics

You’ll pardon the awkward numbering of the five-issue miniseries Hawkeye vs. Deadpool, which begins with issue #0 and ends with issue #4. But this delightful action-comedy romp splatters the walls with hilarious bits that really put the “comic” in comic books. Beginning on Halloween night, Deadpool runs into Hawkeye, with the two quickly teaming up to investigate a murder mystery involving a dead body and a strange USB drive. (It makes a curious case of the word “vs.” in the title, to be frank.)

Continuity-wise, the miniseries intersects with Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn’s monthly Deadpool (including a gut-busting cameo from the ghost of Ben Franklin, originating from the first story arc). It also in a lot of ways acts as a spiritual continuation of Matt Fraction’s acclaimed Hawkeye. But Hawkeye vs. Deadpool is so fast-paced and such a fun read that you don’t need to read anything else even if you’re a dedicated completionist. If you need to kill a single afternoon and want to split your sides, Hawkeye vs. Deadpool is a real bullseye.

7. Black Panther vs. Deadpool by Daniel Kibbelsmith

Black Panther vs. Deadpool
Marvel Comics

When Marvel’s Black Panther grossed billions at the box office in 2018, everything about him exuded untouchable royalty. But only a transgressive, innocently offensive character like Deadpool could dare scratch the king of Wakanda. From writer Daniel Kibbelsmith, the five-issue crossover miniseries Black Panther vs. Deadpool wholly banks on the oddball novelty of its marquee characters duking it out.

After Deadpool’s efforts to save Brooklyn from a Z-list villain results in collateral damage, Deadpool embarks on an urgent mission to Wakanda to retrieve precious Vibranium in order to save a life. While Deadpool politely asks T’Challa at first, the noble Black Panther rebuffs him, leading the two to put claws to katanas. With former Late Show with Stephen Colbert writer Kibbelsmith at the helm, Black Panther vs. Deadpool is a propulsive read. It’s a breezy collision of action and comedy in a showdown no Marvel fan knew they wanted until now. The visual art matches the manic energy of the miniseries, with both Deadpool and Black Panther looking especially feral in jagged and slanted lines.

6. Deadpool by Joe Kelly

Joe Kelly's Deadpool
Marvel Comics

If you want the origins of Deadpool, the character, read The New Mutants. If you want the origins of Deadpool, the satirical and determined jester in red spandex who takes on life one katana swing at a time, read Deadpool by Joe Kelly.

After establishing himself at Marvel on works like Fantastic Four 2099, Joe Kelly embarked on his first monthly assignment: a new Deadpool series in 1997. This very lengthy run gave us most of the hallmarks fans associate Deadpool with today: the breaking of the fourth wall, the abundant pop culture references, even Deadpool’s annoyance factor that gives everyone else in the Marvel Universe a headache. (Wanna see Deadpool reference Street Fighter and uppercut Kitty Pryde while screaming “Shoryuken”? That’s issue #27.)

But past all the juvenile humor is the pathos of a lonely soul who bounces around like an unwanted pinball. Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza shaped Deadpool out of clay, but it was Joe Kelly who gave him a lasting presence. After Kelly’s run on the ’97 Deadpool ended with issue #33, with the series taken over by Christopher Priest (whose run is less acclaimed but no less interesting) and then a series of other freelance scribes before Gail Simone took the series home to – and Deadpool would giggle at this – issue #69.

Issues in Joe Kelly’s run: Deadpool #-1 (flashback one-shot published after issue #6), Deadpool #0, Deadpool #1-33, Annual Deadpool & Daredevil ’97, Annual Deadpool & Death ’98

5. Uncanny X-Force by Rick Remender

Uncanny X-Force
Marvel Comics

Deadpool has never been much of a team player. But that all changed in Rick Remender’s Uncanny X-Force, a continuation of the 2008 X-Force by Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost. Remender’s story picks up after Cyclops shuts down X-Force, with Wolverine covertly keeping operations running as X-Force leader. This new iteration of X-Force consists of Psylocke, Fantomex, Archangel, and Deadpool, who all adopt an incredibly sick black and white uniform color scheme. (Honestly, more superhero teams should adopt unified colors like pro sports.)

Deadpool maintains his rep as a jokester, but Uncanny X-Force turns down the volume on his obnoxiousness to suit the series’ overall serious tone. This doesn’t mean Deadpool takes it easy on Apocalypse, mind you. But Uncanny X-Force isn’t Deadpool’s show to steal, as the Merc lets his pal Wolverine and the more enigmatic Fantomex take up more attention as the series’ main protagonists. Between its gorgeous art and strong character-oriented writing, Uncanny X-Force is not just a great Deadpool title but a great X-Men-adjacent title overall.

4. Deadpool: Bad Blood by Rob Liefeld

Bad Blood by Rob Liefeld
Marvel Comics

Say what you want about Rob Liefeld. When you read a Deadpool comic written by Liefeld, it’s like watching a Terminator flick directed by James Cameron: Nothing beats a proven creator working on their most famous creation.

In 2017, the popular if also divisive comics legend got the greenlight for Deadpool: Bad Blood, an entire Deadpool graphic novel. (Along for the ride are writers Chris Sims, Chad Bowers, and artists Romulo Fajaroo Jr. and Joe Sabino.) The contained series introduces a new nemesis for Deadpool, a thick brawler named Thumper whose past connections to Wade Wilson run deeper than most others in the Marvel Universe. Conceptually a celebration of Deadpool’s early history as seen through Liefeld – including a “reunion” of the original X-Force, albeit in flashback – Deadpool: Bad Blood has all the hallmarks of ’90s era Deadpool with modern touches. The awkward bodily anatomies and aggro aesthetic ain’t a bug baby. They’re all features.

3. Spider-Man/Deadpool

Spider-Man and Wade Wilson.
Marvel Comics

2016 was a great year for Spider-Man and Deadpool. That year, Ryan Reynolds starred in the box office smash Deadpool, an R-rated party at the theater that fans waited for literal years to happen. Shortly after that, Tom Holland swung into his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. So it was excellent timing when Marvel published that same year Spider-Man/Deadpool #1, the first of an epic 50-issue series in which the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler puts up with the decidedly unfriendly assassin.

But while Spider-Man/Deadpool could have rested on its laurels with its A-list characters, the series’ revolving door of top tier writers were not content with mediocrity. Starting with veteran Deadpool writer Joe Kelly, Spider-Man/Deadpool relishes in the unabashed fun of a mismatched pair like Spidey and DP before further exploring what these characters mean to each other. For Spider-Man, he learns to see the person behind the violence and the humor; for Deadpool, he aspires to hold himself to a higher standard of costumed crime fighter. (Also: The series coincides with Peter Parker’s role of CEO of Parker Industries, so Deadpool’s interference of Spidey’s daily routine often gets extra funny.)

Whether it’s roasting Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (issue #6), running into Penn & Teller (issue #11), or speculating their elderly future in the multi-part arc “Oldies,” Spider-Man/Deadpool makes the absolute most of their unstoppable leads. In addition to Kelly, the series also sees writers like Scott Aukerman, Gerry Duggan, Paul Scheer, and Robbie Thompson take a swing at writing the delirious duo.

2. Cable & Deadpool by Fabian Nicieza

Cable and Wade chat.
Marvel Comics

Sometimes, sequels really are better than the originals. After both Deadpool and Cable’s solo titles were canceled, these two gun-toting mutants joined forces to star in Cable & Deadpool, easily one of the best mainstream superhero comics of the 2000s. Written by Fabian Nicieza (with artist Reilly Brown scripting the final two issues), Cable & Deadpool is quintessential 2000s superhero bombast with the distinct vibe of a classic buddy action movie.

The story starts with Cable determined to use his powers to change the world for the better only to wind up before Deadpool, who is hired by a cult to steal a virus that will uniformly turn everyone’s skin color on Earth blue. Eventually, Cable and Deadpool obtain the power of teleportation, with the utterly ingenious caveat being that whenever it’s used, they both teleport. From there, Cable and Deadpool become an unlikely but dynamic pair – plus a later addition in Bob, Agent of Hydra – who come face to face with everyone in the Marvel Universe, from the Fantastic Four to the Avengers to the then-married power couple of Black Panther and Storm.

Cable & Deadpool sports an array of different artists, all of whom bring to the table their own individual styles. That said, there is a pretty criminal overuse in digital airbrushing, as well as an overall aesthetic you could describe as “American manga” (a strange phenomenon unique to the mid-aughts, when anime was still in the midst of discovery by the American mainstream). But no matter how it looks, Cable & Deadpool is a delight from page to page, and proof that the end of one thing is always the start of something new.

1. Deadpool by Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn

Gerry Duggan's Deadpool
Marvel Comics

As the dust settled on Avengers vs. X-Men, Marvel kicked off a new publishing initiative dubbed Marvel NOW. Among its biggest titles was a brand new monthly Deadpool series, co-written by veteran scribe Gerry Duggan and comedian Brian Posehn.

Once again bearing the simple title of Deadpool, the series restored a lot of lost glory for the Merc with the Mouth, following Deadpool figuring his place in the wider Marvel Universe and enduring shocking revelations along the way. Minor spoilers, but at one point Deadpool meets his biological daughter, an adorable li’l mutant named Ellie Camacho.

The starting arc of Duggan/Posehn’s Deadpool is a doozy, in which an amateur sorcerer brings back the souls of dead U.S. presidents in hopes of – ahem, making America great again. (This came out in 2013, by the way.) While that first arc is divisive, the rest of the series is peak Deadpool, a masterful balance of DP’s antics and outrageous challenges with profound emotional angst. Across 45 issues, Duggan and Posehn’s Deadpool is the platonic ideal for anyone looking for a good time that goes for a long time.

Move over, America’s ass. There’s another MCU backside in town that is just as rotund and delightful to see in spandex. The “Merc with a Mouth,” better known as Deadpool, has buns that are so nice that there’s a new Xbox controller made in its image. No, this is not a promotional joke for Deadpool & Wolverine. There is actually an Xbox controller that is shaped like Deadpool’s butt. (Suddenly, I hear Megan Thee Stallion’s “Body” playing.)

Microsoft unveiled this odd controller on Xbox Wire, calling it the “Cheeky Controller” with a firm, um, grip to it. We really appreciate Deadpool’s creativity and thought he put into this design. The sad news is that fans can only get it via a competition at this point. If you’re 18+, following Xbox on X (always Twitter in our hearts) and sharing the Xbox sweepstakes tweet gets you an entry. Maybe the Xbox controller with Deadpool’s butt on the back will become available for all at some point. Until then, we are totally jealous of the lucky winner (assuming it will only be one!)

In addition to the controller, the winner will get a sweet custom console that features Deadpool’s katanas. The contest ends on August 11, which is after Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters on July 26. Let’s see who wins the battle to own Deadpool’s best asset.

Will DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Lead to Classic X-Men in AVENGERS: SECRET WARS? https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-3-wolverine-classic-x-men-avengers-secret-wars-possible-connection-kevin-feige-mcu/ Tue, 25 Jun 2024 20:15:00 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=928000 Logan and Wade Wilson are reuniting for Deadpool & Wolverine. But what if Logan's entry into the MCU leads to something bigger in Avengers: Secret Wars?

The post Will DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Lead to Classic X-Men in AVENGERS: SECRET WARS? appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Deadpool & Wolverine is almost here, and the fandom couldn’t be more excited to see “Marvel Jesus” and his adamantium-boned buddy team up at last. While we still don’t know many things about the film, the trailers have given us some rather large clues as to the plot. And we think those clues hint strongly that Deadpool & Wolverine will lead directly into Avengers: Secret Wars, the final chapter of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. What we do know is that Logan and Wade are trapped together in Void, the repository of dead timelines first seen in Loki. We also know that they’re fighting X-Men villain Cassandra Nova.

Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) with Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) who is holding a TVA Tempad.

In that Mad Max-esque Void, there are several known mutants from the X-Men films, like Pyro and Sabretooth. This is the first MCU project that officially canonized the Fox X-Men films as part of the larger cosmology, much as Spider-Man: No Way Home did for the pre-Tom Holland Spidey films. So we think it’s all leading up to a classic X-Men reunion, probably fighting the Avengers in Secret Wars. One thing we feel confident in saying about any of these Multiversal mutants coming our way is that the Wolverine from Logan definitely won’t be resurrected.

Deadpool & Wolverine to Feature Zombie Logan? Probably Not

Wolverine in his dying moments from Logan.
Twentieth Century Studios

Marvel Studios is leaning hard into the Multiverse right now. Therefore, we know that Jackman’s arrival means they are not going to undo Wolverine’s death in Logan. As it stands, that movie felt disconnected and in its own universe, even from the original X-Men films. After all, the events of Logan don’t really line up with the restored future we saw at the end of Days of Future Past. So with the Multiverse Saga in play now, we think that Logan can remain its own thing. Whatever version of Wolverine we see in Deadpool & Wolverine definitely won’t be the same one who died in Logan. They won’t dig him up and Frankenstein him back to life, so to speak. We think the integrity of James Mangold’s film is safe.

A Deadpool and Wolverine Road Trip?!

Wade and Logan jump through a sling ring portal in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Marvel Studios

In the past, Ryan Reynolds has said that his original plans for Deadpool & Wolverine involved a “Rashomon-style road trip with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.” We feel that is probably still the case, only with a Multiversal bent this time. One particular scene in the trailer of Logan and Wade jumping through a mystical portal, very similar to that of Doctor Strange’s portal, suggests it is. To us, that indicates they’ll be reality-hopping together, at least part of the time. We honestly believe that with Hugh Jackman coming back for Deadpool & Wolverine, he’ll stick around for one more outing afterward, and it’ll be Avengers: Secret Wars. And maybe he will bring some of his fellow X-Men with him.

Deadpool & Wolverine Will Lead to an X-Men Reunion

The cast of 2003's X2
Twentieth Century Studios

Problematic director aside, the original X-Men films still matter. Their success paved the way for Spider-Man and eventually the entire MCU. And Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige himself has a bit of a sentimental soft spot for the first X-Men movies. They were his first on-screen credits in a Marvel film after all. That’s why he included Patrick Stewart in Multiverse of Madness, and Kelsey Grammer’s Beast in The Marvels. Those films started him on the path that led him to become head of Marvel Studios. So before the inevitable reboot of Marvel’s mutants, which is on the horizon, he might want to pay homage to the ones who started it all. It’s just a question of which X-Men make the cut. We know several confirmed secondary mutants already. If they’re in this, some of the main team must be coming our way, too.

Is Deadpool & Wolverine a Prelude to Avengers: Secret Wars?

The logo for Avengers: The Secret Wars
Marvel Studios

If the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars follows the comics in even the smallest way, it will see the introduction of Battleworld. In the comics, that was a patchwork planet made out of the remains of several realities. But each of those realities became slightly different (or sometimes very different) when merging into Battleworld. So one of those realities could be a version of the Fox X-Men universe. It doesn’t even have to follow the continuity (such as it is) of the Fox X-Men films, because they have recreated it as something new. As we stated, we know that a good chunk of the film takes place in the Void from Loki, the repository world of dead realities. Could the Void simply become Battleworld in Secret Wars?

Wade and Logan in Deadpool & Wolverine (L) and the Fox X-Men (R)
Marvel Studios/Twentieth Century Films

Given all that, we could still get the original actors back in their roles. Meaning we could get a proper send-off for not only Hugh Jackman, but also Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, James Marsden, Famke Janssen, Kelsey Grammer, and Patrick Stewart. He recently hinted broadly as to his return. We think he knows something he’s not sharing with the rest of the class (of Xavier’s School).

Could We See Costumed X-Men at Long Last?

The main heroes from X-Men: The Animated Series.
Disney

Kevin Feige was one of the few true Marvel Comics fans on the set of X-Men, according to Hugh Jackman. In fact, Jackman has said in interviews that Feige snuck him Wolverine comics to his trailer, on the sly, as comic books were forbidden on set. And he also fixed Logan’s hair to be more comics-accurate. Now that he’s in charge of the whole enchilada, we knew he couldn’t resist finally putting Jackman in a comics-accurate costume. So if any of the other original X-Men show up, we think this holds true for them as well. Imagine if we see the 2000s cast, flying into action as the X-Men: The Animated Series theme plays? We’re losing our minds over it already.

A Deadpool & Wolverine with the two of them engaged in a fight
Marvel Studios

Now, maybe Jackman’s return to play Wolverine really is “one last time.” But given his comments in the past about how fun it would be to be part of the MCU someday, we have a feeling that Deadpool & Wolverine is almost certainly not the end quite yet. And the X-Men might stand next to the Avengers and the Fantastic Four in battle before it’s all said and done.

2024 is shaping up to be the year of Deadpool & Wolverine, not just on the big screen, but also in the pages of Marvel Comics. The publisher has announced The Weapon X-Traction Saga, an event story starring Logan and Wade Wilson that will run through several titles this summer. Instead of appearing in its own series, this storyline will be a backup feature, at no extra cost, through eight ongoing Marvel titles. Weapon X-Traction Saga is written by Ryan North (Fantastic Four) and illustrated by Avengers artist Javier Garrón. You can read the official synopsis below:

Art for summer 2024's Deadpool and Wolverine event The Weapon X-Traction Saga by Javier Garrón.
Marvel Comics

Weapon X-Traction kicks off when a weary Wolverine runs into a clingy Deadpool at a favorite watering hole. From this humble beginning, they embark on an epic journey of non-friendship that will carry them across the Multiverse, battling zombies and gun-wielding librarians and—of course—one another!

The first issue for this storyline is Incredible Hulk #14, hitting in July. Fitting, as that’s the same month Wolverine & Deadpool arrives in theaters. It’s also fitting that this storyline kicks off in an issue of the Incredible Hulk series in particular. In July 1974, Wolverine made his debut in Incredible Hulk #181. So his starting a saga this big where he got his start fifty years ago just feels right. Marvel has yet to reveal which other titles this storyline will unfold in. Additionally, a release from Marvel shares that “Fans will also find that each issue containing an installment of the saga will have a special WEAPON X-TRACTION VARIANT COVER” that celebrates Deadpool & Wolverine. Cute.

Although the character of Deadpool hit the scene almost two decades after Wolverine, the pair of frenemies have long been synonymous with one another. Mainly thanks to their similar powers via the Weapon X program, and their not-so-similar demeanors. Lest we forget, Ryan Reynolds’ version of the Merc with the Mouth actually first appeared in live-action in a Wolverine movie. Although, we do think Reynolds would like us to forget that actually.

The first chapter of The Weapon X-Traction Saga arrives this July. You can check out the full line-up below.

Creator Rob Liefeld made a name for himself in the early ’90s, first at Marvel Comics, and then later, as a founder of Image Comics and Extreme Studios. But of all his creations, none have become more iconic than “the Merc with the Mouth,” Deadpool. Now, after three decades, Liefeld is retiring from the character, with the new 5-issue series Deadpool Team-Up. For his swan song to Wade Wilson, Liefeld is teaming him up with some iconic Marvel heroes, and some very obscure ones. We got to chat with Liefeld about his grand Deadpool finale, the character’s early days, and his hopes for the upcoming film starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.

Nerdist. You created Deadpool back in 1991, for New Mutants. And now you’re telling your last Deadpool story with Deadpool Team-Up. Is this a story where you’re just letting yourself do everything you wanted to do with the character one last time?

Rob Liefeld: Yes. I did several hundreds of pages worth of Deadpool in the last several years, since about 2017. And it was a specific story I was telling about a character that had a grudge against Deadpool. But it was not as weird and crazy as this is. And I decided… “Deadpool doesn’t have enough of a rogue’s gallery because he had zero rogue’s gallery.’ I told Marvel, “How did you go 20 years and not give him a Joker, a Sabretooth, somebody like an echo?” And so that was my intent when I did Deadpool: Bad Blood, Deadpool: Badder Blood. Look, Deadpool: Bad Blood blew up, sold out, $25 hardcover, number one on the charts. It was very well received.

Then, I did the sequel. But I thought, “You know what?” We’ve all had talents and artists, maybe it’s a musician, sometimes it’s an athlete. They stay a little too long at the dance. And right before the year ended, Marvel said, “Can you do a story in this special that we’re putting out? We would like to include you.” So I did a 10-page story in Deadpool: Seven Deadly Sins. And I literally went back and touched on kind of a weird character that I had introduced in 2004 in the pages of X-Force. And that was when I thought, “If I want to go out, I’m going to go out weird.”

The reason that I approached it this way is that I think I’m doing work that I think is really accomplished in regard to how it’s all coming out. Everything comes together the way I see it in my head, which was not always that way. And we’ve all had artists that stayed too long, they slip. I’ve know artists that I was huge fans of that don’t draw or create images anything like the way that they used to. So I said, “You know what? I can’t do this forever, so I should go out on my terms.” I talked to Marvel about it. And the long answer is yes, this is super weird and strange, with obscure Marvel characters, which is the kind of stories that I grew up on.

Back in the early 90s, you were creating characters at Marvel and Image at lightning speed. Did you ever have any inclination back then that maybe Deadpool would be the one that stuck in the pop culture consciousness the way he did, or did it take you by surprise?

Liefeld: He’s on the cover [of his first appearance in New Mutants #98]. He’s in the front. If the artist puts the character in the front, that character is the one you’re supposed to connect to. I can tell you the process, and it’s very consistent over all these years. Cable came out of nowhere, completely a reflection of me, who I was. There’s another editor at Marvel who can attest to this, I was about to take over Alpha Flight. Guess who was going to be an Alpha Flight? Cable. He was part of my Alpha Flight proposal. Then they said, “Rob, we really want you to do New Mutants.” I said, “I have to bring Cable with me.” And so then I formulated Cable into the New Mutants. Sales went through the roof.

Marvel Comics

They offered me X-Factor. There was no way I was doing X-Factor. I would’ve fallen flat on my face. I was not ready at that point in my career to do the original X-Men, to follow Walt Simonson, a god of comic books. And I said, “New Mutants, I can fix that house up. I can flip that. I can make that a fixer-upper, but I need all these things.” And Cable, boom, sales took off. And look, the last issue of New Mutants was the top-selling X-Men book of the month. That month, February 1991, New Mutants out-sells X-Men. No special bells, whistles, acetate, glow in the dark, scratch and sniff, nothing. It’s just a comic book with a story. And people showed up and they dug it.

And New Mutants #100 was after issues 99 and 98. With issue 98, they let me write the book and I said, “I’m bringing a whole bunch of stuff with me.” Look at all those… In ’98 and ’99, you got Deadpool, Shatterstar, Domino, Feral. I just crowded. I had very little time to work, but it is of legend at Marvel. They got the most mail on a new character in a decade with Deadpool. X-Force #1, suddenly he had to be on a trading card in X-Force going out at 5 million copies.

Marvel Comics

They said, “Rob, you need to move up. You have him appearing in issue seven. We can’t wait that long.” I love that they were able to have the data in their hands and say, “Rob, this character’s working with the fans.” So that’s why the cover of X-Force issue 2 is not Cable. It’s Deadpool. Like you said, I was super prolific. I was built for this shit, dude. I was built in a lab to make comic books and I was up for it. And yes, I knew Deadpool would be popular because he’s red and black like Spider-Man. I literally was thinking “Todd [McFarlane] is having a lot of success with Spider-Man. And not only that, Eric Larsen, my two peers, they’re both kicking ass on Spider-Man. And do you know how much easier it is to draw Deadpool than to draw Spider-Man?

Look, a face, eyes, nose, it’s harder to draw Josh Brolin than it is to draw a red shape with big black eyes. And I’m like, “Now I got my own Spider-Man, except he has guns and he has swords.” Because the G.I. Joe generation, Snake Eyes, we love that stuff. And boom, he clicked. And like I said, there’s a reason. People forget. I get called out all the time. People say “you didn’t have Deadpool tied into Weapon X.” I’m like, “Oh, so you never read X-Force number two that came out in 1991?” And then they go, “I thought Grant Morrison made this connection.” No, it was me. It was me. I was making those connections.

In the previews for this series, it shows Wade teaming up with characters like Spider-Gwen, the Hulk, and Wolverine. Why make your last Deadpool story a team-up title?

Covers for Marvel Team Up and Marvel: Two in One from the '70s.
Marvel Comics

The thing is, when I was a kid, Marvel Team-Up and Marvel Two-in-One were both showcases for Spider-Man and the Thing, because Fantastic Four and Spider-Man were the top two franchises in the mid-70s. And Marvel Team-Up and Marvel Two-in-One always had them standing next to relatively obscure characters because they wanted to use the showcase to feature the other characters in the deep bench of the Marvel universe. So while Wolverine and some of the popular characters would pop up every now and then, they’d do some really weird characters I would never have heard of if I didn’t buy Marvel Team-Up and Marvel Two-in-One. And both of those had really long runs and I wish that those books were still out.

Fantastic Four Annual #16 from 1981, the first appearance of Dragon Lord, created by Steve Ditko.
Marvel Comics

But when I told Marvel, “Hey, I want Deadpool in a story with Ral Dorn.” And they’re like, “Rob, who is that?” I think, “I have these people at Marvel who don’t know who Dragon Lord is.” I say, “This is by Steve Ditko. He freaking created Spider-Man for you. You should know these things.” So then I built the story around Dragon Lord who appeared once in this one annual, but has magic multidimensional realms, dragons. And I figured this is a total change of pace. This is not the Deadpool that I’ve done before.

Obviously, a character like Wolverine seems like a no-brainer for this book, but any particular reason why you had Hulk and Ghost Spider?

She’s super cool, and I want to draw her before I retire. That’s it. The reason Hulk is in there because I can work Hulk into anything. And I’ve drawn Spider-Man. Instead, I want to do Spider-Gwen. So Crystar and Dragon Lord are my weird obscure characters. Then there are your Liefeld creations like Major X and Lady Anime who are introduced in previous works I’ve done that I’ve pulled in. And then you’ve got your big bold Marvel names with Hulk, Wolverine, and then obviously, now Spider-Gwen.

Marvel Comics

I did a five-issue G.I. Joe Snake Eyes book because I had to do it before my career was over. I crossed it off the bucket list. I have kind of done everything and I’m going to go back to just doing my own stuff and finish my career doing stuff like that. Really, I do believe it’s been an amazing career. Marvel and I have gotten along so great, especially the last decade has been so much fun. My readers, the publisher, everybody has been fantastic. It is a really fun place to work, and I think they always just let me do my own thing. Every time I’m worried about fitting into continuity, they say, “Rob, just do whatever you want.” That’s what every artist lives for. “Do whatever you want.” It’s a very nice existence.

I’m an ‘80s kid, so I am very familiar with Crystar, the Crystal Warrior comics and toys. It was a fairly short-lived action figure line from that time, and it had an accompanying Marvel series, The Saga of Crystar. And he’s part of this new mini-series too. I was one of five kids who loved those toys and comics. Was it difficult to get Crystar involved in this series, since he’s technically not a Marvel character?

The 1983-1984 Marvel Comics series The Saga of Crystar: Crystal Warrior.
Marvel Comics

Liefeld: They do own him! No, Marvel owns Crystar, and they let me know, “Rob, if you want him in this bizarro story…” And I said, “He’s in.” Like I said, it’s just a really fun romp. I’m not trying to do anything k-e-w-l. There is no cool in my game. I’m just having fun with bizarre old Steve Ditko characters and designs and worlds and names. And then, of course, Crystar, I hit the mother load. I’m like, “I just drew pages this week of Wolverine and Deadpool popping Crystar in the face and him popping them back.” And I’m like, “I am in the sandbox. I’m a kid.”

So yeah, I was in high school when Crystar was part of that giant toy explosion. And what are we in right now? Because I’ve done this on my podcast. I mean, Transformers, ThunderCats, Gatchaman. It’s like all the toys are back. And so here’s one from the drawer. I found out yesterday, that half the people like you know who Crystar is, half the people are like, “What the heck is a Crystar??”

What do you feel has changed the most about yourself as a creator in the three decades since you started out, and what of those changes are you bringing to your last Deadpool story?

Liefeld: I don’t think I’ve changed all that much. I think part of the appeal is I never took a big swing in a different direction. The guys that I like kind of stayed the same as they were when they came in. John Byrne actually radically changed. And I have been on the record, I have a podcast, I talk on social media. I believe John Byrne had some glorious deal with the devil. I don’t care that I’m saying it out loud. For 10 years, he did this incredibly perfect commercial work. Then he changed his work. It wasn’t the way he drew, it was the way he laid out pages. The way he told stories, it’s totally different.

Modern iterations of Deadpool from his creator, Rob Liefeld.

George Pérez was pretty much the same all the way through. George Pérez when he passed, he was at his peak. He stayed in a certain lane. And look, we all have bands that we love, and you look forward to their new album and you’re like, “Oh shit, they went in a totally different direction. This doesn’t sound anything like my favorite hits.” I respect them for doing that, but I would rather “Can you come back and give me something that sounds a little like the familiar sounds that I loved you for in the first place?”

Ok, last question, I know you really can’t say anything. But on a scale of 1-10, just how stoked should fans be over Deadpool and Wolverine?

Okay, I’m going to answer this very, very carefully. So I’m on the set of Deadpool one, very fortunate. Visited all three sets, hung out on each of them, never gave up any secrets, never spoiled anything. When I was there on the set of Deadpool one, I was looking at the playback on the monitors, and I’m said, “Oh wow, this movie’s going to open at $65 million.” This is February and March of 2015. I think “Shut up Liefeld. Don’t you know you don’t talk about box office while you’re making a movie? Shut up. You’re jinxing it.” Then I think, “Come on. I know what’s commercial. I know this is going to open to $65.” Well, they’re right. I did. I jinxed the hell out of that movie. It opened $135 million instead of $65 million.

Deadpool & Wolverine, the stuff that I was there in London watching them film has not been revealed in any trailer, in any teaser. And towards the end of the day when they were setting up a new shot, I think “Are they really doing this? Oh my gosh. I didn’t even know they were going there.” If they’re going to tell me that I’m jinxing the movie, I can’t possibly say more than [director] Shawn Levy has. Shawn is out there talking the movie up all the time. Here’s the deal. I think that this movie is going to be an absolute crowd-pleaser. I know comic books. I’ve lived comic books. I’ve lived comic book films. My kids grew up and love them. I don’t know how this does not completely satisfy. But I know theater owners need people.

Deadpool and Wolverine looking at tempad
Marvel Studios

We love the theater experience. Deadpool & Wolverine I think is going to contribute positively in a time of great need. And I’m going to tell you when I was at CinemaCon in Vegas, the guy who’s making all of the custom popcorn buckets and Slurpee cups and stuff you have not seen, they wouldn’t let it on the show floor. And they kept opening up suitcase after suitcase saying, “We can show you this because you created Deadpool. We can show you this.” And it’s going to overwhelm, but I think collectors are going to go crazy for it.

The best part is that the theaters are going to have all that money pumping in, because I want theaters to stay open. Deadpool & Wolverine is going to be great for everybody’s bottom line. And we’ve had a drought. I’m so glad that Kevin Feige was honest in Empire Magazine saying “You have to be living under a rock to not know that we haven’t exactly been setting the world on fire.” I’m now paraphrasing, but it was something along those lines. And this is a crowd-pleaser. I think you are going to dig it the most.

If we had to predict what Deadpool & Wolverine‘s box office total will look like we’d guess “all the money.” How close will we get with that prognostication? We’re about to start finding out, because tickets for Deadpool & Wolverine have now gone on sale. And Marvel Studios celebrated its big multiversal pre-sale with a new promo and a new poster for the highly-anticipated movie.

Deadpool & Wolverine tickets are now officially on sale everywhere movie tickets are sold. That’s one big step closer to letting fans see the oozing sexual chemistry between Wade and Logan. Another is this new teaser for the film, which actually reveals there’s slightly less sexual chemistry than we thought. (Though definitely not zero!)

Deadpool & Wolverine‘s new poster does confirm there’s still plenty of animosity between the two, though.

Yeah, we’re sticking with “all the money.” And it’s a good bet on our end. Fandango has revealed that “Deadpool & Wolverine has broken Fandango’s best first-day ticket sales record for 2024. The film is also the best first-day pre-seller from the Deadpool franchise, surpassing the first day of ticket sales for Deadpool and Deadpool 2.”

Additionally, AMC’s CEO revealed that Deadpool & Wolverine has sold more day one tickets than any other R-rated movie in AMC’s history.

There you have it. Deadpool & Wolverine releases on July 26, so snag your tickets today.

Deadpool Could Appear in a Future X-MEN ’97 Season After All https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-could-appear-in-future-season-of-x-men-97/ Tue, 21 May 2024 19:05:18 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=982311 Although he was not allowed to appear in X-Men '97, Deadpool could still pop in and give Wolverine a hard time in future seasons.

Not long ago, former X-Men ’97 showrunner Beau DeMayo indicated on social media that Deadpool was an “off-limits” character for them to use on the series. Now, it seems that rule might not be a forever rule, and future seasons might include Wade Wilson in all his glory. While talking to Screen Rant, Marvel Animation’s Brad Winderbaum clarified the Deadpool situation regarding X-Men ’97, and hinted that we just might see him pop up in future seasons. Here’s what he had to say about everyone’s favorite Merc with the Mouth:

I don’t know that it was like a hard and fast rule that we couldn’t use Deadpool. We would have had to have an insanely compelling reason to bring Deadpool in. Because we’re also developing the feature simultaneously. So, unless it was something that really was an undeniable creative idea, it seemed like, ‘Why would we do it?’ But also, I’ll say, the season is so chock-full of big, giant, amazing fulfilling ideas that throwing Deadpool in there almost feels like arbitrary at a certain point. Is there a potential for Deadpool to come in? Absolutely, he was in the original series, briefly as we all know, and certainly we’re all fans, so we’ll see what happens.

Deadpool in animated form from 2013's Ultimate Spider-Man, and Wolverine from X-Men '97.
Marvel Animation

Several years back, Marvel announced a Deadpool animated series for FX with Donald Glover in charge. However, they canceled it before airing a single episode. Maybe Ryan Reynolds didn’t want anyone else playing him on the regular. A guest appearance on an X-Men show may not be as hard to pull off though. If and when Deadpool shows up, it will likely have something to do with Wolverine’s Weapon X days. With Logan no longer having his adamantium skeleton, he might need help to get it back. Who better to enlist than another survivor of the same program like Wade?

We imagine any version of Deadpool on X-Men ’97 would be significantly more toned down than the big-screen iteration. After all, X-Men ’97 isn’t really a show where one drops f-bombs left and right. A “safe for kids” version appeared in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon back in 2013 on Disney XD. So there is precedent for this to happen.

Having said that, we wouldn’t be surprised if Ryan Reynolds played the role in X-Men ’97 when the time comes. This is not something we expect to see in the near future. In the meantime, we’ll have to be content with the live-action X-Men meeting Wade in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Hugh Jackman? More like Hugh Backman. Back as Logan, that is. And when he returns he’ll help his buddy Wade Wilson do more than save a universe or two. He’ll help Wade set a personal onscreen record. Deadpool & Wolverine‘s listing from AMC Theaters says it will have a runtime of two hours and seven minutes. That unofficial length would mean it’s the Merc With a Mouth’s longest movie entry yet.

Marvel Studios

AMC Theaters now has an official page (which we first learned about at Collider) for Deadpool & Wolverine. It states the film clocks in at 127 minutes. (Great length! No notes!) That exceeds both the 1:48 length (108 minutes) of 2016’s Deadpool and the 1:59 runtime (119 minutes) for Deadpool 2. That extra space should allow for even more MCU and Fox X-Men era surprise cameos.

But we’ll also be fine if it just means more of Deadpool and Wolverine.

As X-Men ’97 gears up for its season one finale, fans have some big questions about what’s going on with other Marvel heroes during the events of the series—especially as Magneto has essentially declared war on humanity. We know other Marvel heroes exist in this world, because we’ve seen them. Spider-Man has already swung in, however briefly, and Captain America had quite the confrontation with Rogue. So where exactly are the Avengers right now in X-Men ’97? Via IGN, we’ve learned that former X-Men ’97 showrunner Beau DeMayo had some answers. He also gives a reason why we haven’t seen everyone’s favorite “Merc with the Mouth” Deadpool during X-Men ’97 season one.

Captain America in X-Men '97, and Deadpool in X-Men: The Animated Series.
Marvel Animation

On the subject of the Avengers, it seems Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are out in space, dealing with a matter of galactic importance. A fan asked if the Avengers were knee-deep in a version in their own Marvel crossover event “Operation: Galactic Storm.” This 1992 Avengers storyline was all about a Shi’ar war with the Kree, which we know is going on thanks to episode 7, “Lifedeath, Part II.” So that’s where Cap and company are, while Bastion activated the Prime Sentinels and Magneto retaliated. As for the Fantastic Four? Still no answer. They may be with the Avengers.

There are also many famous mutants unaccounted for. Not everyone was on Genosha when the attack happened in episode five. A fan online asked about Sabretooth, and DeMayo simply said he’s “lying low.” Victor Creed may not appear in season one, but we’re not counting him out for season two.

We’re actually more curious as to where Mystique is, although we suppose she could be hiding in plain sight. For some time we thought she was Valerie Cooper, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. When asked, DeMayo just played coy. We’re simply dying to know where Raven Darkholme is.

Finally, someone asked about good old Wade Wilson. Deadpool made a few silent cameos in the original X-Men: The Animated Series, so we know he exists in this universe. All DeMayo would say on the subject of Deadpool was that he was “off limits.” This was no doubt due to Deadpool & Wolverine, and Marvel Animation not wanting to step on their toes. Hopefully, in later seasons, Wade might show up. We actually think Ryan Reynolds wouldn’t be off the table to voice him either.

Hopefully, future seasons give fans not only Deadpool, but also a proper Avengers vs. X-Men fight. After all, the comic book storyline that followed “Fatal Attractions,” the story X-Men ’97 is currently adapting, was an Avengers/X-Men crossover called “Bloodties.” Here’s hoping that saga comes in later seasons.

Who Is DEADPOOL 3’s Dogpool? Marvel’s Mutant Mutt, Explained https://nerdist.com/article/who-is-deadpool-3-character-dogpool-marvel-comics-history-of-mutant-mutt-wilson-explained/ Tue, 07 May 2024 15:31:00 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=967006 Dogpool, the "Merc with the Bark," is set to appear in Deadpool 3 alongside Wade Wilson. We explain this very good boy's comics backstory.

The post Who Is DEADPOOL 3’s Dogpool? Marvel’s Mutant Mutt, Explained appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

You know you’re a true comic book superstar when there are endless variations of you out there. Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, they’ve all got multiple versions of themselves running around. Although Deadpool has not been around nearly as long as those previously mentioned icons, he already has a ton of “other Deadpools” out in the wild. There’s Kidpool, Lady Deadpool, and yes, Dogpool. And as the name suggests, he’s Deadpool, just as a canine. Thanks to Ryan Reynolds’ Instagram posts, we know “The Merc with the Bark” is going to appear in Deadpool 3. But what is the actual Marvel Comics history of Dogpool? Or as Deadpool loves to call him, “Cujo.” We’re here to explain it all.

The Marvel Comics Origins of Dogpool

The birth of Dogpool, the Merc with the Bark.
Marvel Comics

Like Alligator Loki and Spider-Ham before him, Dogpool continues a proud tradition of animal versions of famous Marvel heroes. As far as animal doppelgänger characters in the Marvel Universe go, Dogpool is a relatively recent addition. He first appeared in Prelude to Deadpool Corps #3 in 2010, and then died tragically in Deadpool Kills Deadpool #1 back in 2013. The pooch known as Dogpool hailed from Earth-103173, and was known as Wilson, just like the Wade Wilson of Earth-616 we all know and love. In his world, Wilson was the guinea pig test subject for a brand called Mascara X, intended to be makeup that would always replenish itself after just one use. Of course, “Mascara X” is a spoof on “Weapon X,” where Wade Wilson (and Wolverine) got their powers.

Dogpool during his circus performer days as "The Death Defying Hound"
Marvel Comics

Just like the Deadpool we all know, Wilson gained healing powers. And also like human Wade, they hideously disfigured him as a result. The amoral Babeline Cosmetics company didn’t realize the tests gave Wilson powers, and they threw the poor doggo into the dumpster. Depressed by his state, and the rejection he received from all who looked at his ugly mug, Wilson tried to end it all by throwing himself in front of a moving vehicle. But he survived and healed instantly. A circus truck passed by and saw the miraculous self-healing dog, and so Wilson joined their circus. They rechristened him as Deadpool, “the Death Defying Hound.” He was part of this circus, and almost killed by a dog Wolverine. Until the human Wade Wilson came to his Earth to recruit him into the Deadpool Corps, that is.

Dogpool Joins the Deadpool Corps and Promptly Dies

The death of Dogpool in 2013's Deadpool Kills Deadpool.
Marvel Comics

So what is the Deadpool Corps, you might ask? Well, much like the Thor Corps, it’s an army made of different multiversal variants of Wade Wilson. The 616 Deadpool actually founded the team, to save reality from a powerful cosmic being, the Awareness. The Awareness had one goal—to devour the consciousness of the Multiverse itself. They recruited Dogpool, who formed a close bond with Kidpool. Later, once the Awareness threat ended, Wade Wilson had to gather the Deadpool Corps once again, to fight the Dreadpool Corps, made up of evil Deadpools from across the multiverse. It was during this event that Dogpool came to Earth-616 to warn our version of Wade. When an evil Deadpool tried to kill the 616 version, Dogpool heroically gave his life to save him. During his brief time on this Earth (and a few others) Dogpool made a lasting impression.

Dogpool in Deadpool 3 and in the MCU

Dogpool, as he appears in the pages of Marvel Comics and in live-action in Deadpool 3.
Marvel Comics

So how will Dogpool fit into the overall story of Deadpool 3? Well, we already know the multiverse is playing a big part in the upcoming film. And rumors suggest we’ll be seeing Kidpool, and maybe even the entire Deadpool Corps. And you can’t have the Deadpool Corps without at least one appearance from Dogpool.

In a recent interview with Empire, Reynolds shares of the pup, “It’s love at first sight…He loves Dogpool.” And offers, “Her real name is Peggy, and she won the award for Britain’s Ugliest Dog. The reason why I was a huge proponent for her was because she feels like the animal manifestation of Wade Wilson. It was, just like many things during the writing process, a tiny little afterthought, and it grew. It was one of those things where you just keep listening to the movie, and Dogpool became a staple.” But, of course, Dogpool is still a Deadpool. Reynolds concludes, “Dogpool’s a Pool, so probably has some moral flexibility about where she wees and poops.”

Maybe it’ll be a brief cameo, or maybe Dogpool will tag along with Wade for most of the movie. We just know that he looks like a very good boy (although a bit mangy) and we can’t wait to see him up on the big screen when Deadpool 3 hits theaters on July 26, 2024.

The MCU loves a yellow super suit. First, it gave Charlie Cox’s Daredevil his red and yellow outfit when he appeared on the Disney+ series, She-Hulk. And now, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have officially revealed what costume Wolverine will wear for his MCU debut. And no surprise, Deadpool 3, a.k.a. Deadpool & Wolverine, has opted to give Wolverine his bright yellow (and blue) suit, a costume pulled straight from the pages of Marvel Comics. Although Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has appeared on our movie screens many times, his yellow comics-accurate suit has not made the live-action jump… Until now. But a bright yellow suit on this extra grumpy version of Wolverine in Deadpool 3 seems exactly appropriate.

You can check out the first-look image of Wolverine’s MCU costume from Deadpool 3 below. Then, take a minute to fully appreciate the incredible yellow-ness of this suit.

We bet we’re going to hear Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool refer to Jackman’s Wolverine as “Sunshine” at least once in the movie, thanks to this costume. And, the yellow and red suits for these heroes might lead to some ketchup and mustard jokes in Deadpool 3, much to Wolverine’s annoyance. But Wolverine had to eventually suit up in the comics’ yellow and blue X-Men costume in a Marvel movie.

Another Look at Wolverine’s Yellow Deadpool 3 Suit Comes From an Unexpected Source

Deadpool & Wolverine‘s first trailer did not feature another look at Wolverine’s yellow suit. But now, another glimpse at how the comics-accurate suit will look has emerged from an unexpected source, a drink cup displayed at Cinema Con. Although this rendition of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine seems more like concept art than a true visual from the movie, it’s still interesting to take a look at the details. You can check out the image below.

New Images Reveals the Finer Details of the Deadpool & Wolverine Yellow MCU Suit

Our latest look at Deadpool & Wolverine zooms in on the finer details of Hugh Jackman’s new yellow suit. You can take in all the finer points of the costume below.

The Marvel Comics Origins of Wolverine’s Classic Costume, the Yellow and Blue Suit

So how did we arrive at this Deadpool 3 look for Wolverine? Wolverine made his debut in The Incredible Hulk #181 in 1974, wearing his classic yellow and blue costume. The mask was slightly different at first. But by the time the Canadian mutant became a part of the X-Men in Giant Size-X-Men #1 the following year, the classic yellow and blue suit as we know it was introduced, with the larger Wolverine mask. That look stuck until 1980, when Logan received his brown and tan suit. The second Wolverine costume lasted a decade, but he went back to his yellow and blue for the X-Men: The Animated Series era in 1992. This is likely why Wolverine’s yellow suit is seen as THE costume for a generation.

The history of Wolverine's comics costumes, from 1974 through to 2008.
Marvel Comics

If there’s a true direct from the comic books inspiration here, the Deadpool 3 costume looks the most like Wolverine’s in Astonishing X-Men, which ran from 2004-2008. The great John Cassaday designed that outfit. The biggest detail that doesn’t match up to the Astonishing X-Men look is that Wolverine now has sleeves instead of bare arms. Oh, and no mask that we can see yet. But we expect that’s coming. You simply can’t have a complete classic yellow Wolverine costume without the mask, right?

Deadpool 3 Brings Us This Iconic Look in Hugh Jackman’s Potentially Final Turn as Wolverine

Fans have long-clamored to see this classic-colored costume on the hero. And the MCU loves to deliver an Easter egg if it can. As mentioned, yellow might seem an odd color for the hero known for being a bit of a grump. But, although Wolverine has worn many different costumes in his long Marvel Comics’ career, his suits have more often than not included yellow in them. It seems like Hugh Jackman had to don the color as Wolverine at least once before he hung up his claws.

Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy shared more about Wolverine’s potential final turn on screen and bringing the yellow suit to life. He noted, “Like the rest of the world, I’ve waited two decades to see Wolverine in a whole movie with Deadpool, and I don’t know if this is our last shot at Wolverine on screen, so I was going to make goddamned sure we get the old yellow and blue just once, and that we get it right.”

And, in order to do that, Wolverine’s yellow costume went through “multiple, multiple, multiple iterations and fittings.” But Levy adds, “It also helps that I’m making this movie within the MCU, so I have access to an army of the nerdiest nerds available to a Marvel project.”

Could Deadpool & Wolverine Be Hugh Jackman’s Final Outing as Wolverine?

Before Deadpool 3 became a reality, Hugh Jackman said his Wolverine days had ended, and he would not play the character again. Of course, we can never say never, but those previous pronouncements make it likely the actor will be done with the role of Wolverine, yellow suit or otherwise, after the Deadpool movie. If this is indeed Hugh Jackman’s last time as the hero, then it’s fitting to end it on this classic note. Finally, we will see Wolverine, as we’ve come to know him, in the costume we most associate with the role.

Marvel Studios had slated Deadpool 3 to release on May 3, 2024. But we may see a shift in that release date depending on when the studios agree to fair compensation and support for their writers and actors.

After 23 years, Hugh Jackman will finally wear his comics-accurate costume in Deadpool & Wolverine. Although the first X-Men movie made a snarky remark about yellow spandex costumes, fans have waited forever to see Logan in the outfit on-screen. With the confirmation of the TVA in the trailers, as well as the inclusion of the Multiversal junkyard called the Void, it feels like several of the Fox-era X-Men might appear in this film alongside Logan. In fact, we already know of several minor mutants who will show up, and they deserve comic-book-style costume upgrades too, properly paying homage to their Marvel Comics origins. But which X-Men comics costumes should appear in the MCU’s world? Here are the X-Men we’d love to see in the MCU, and the costumes we’d love to see them wear.

If Gambit Appears, We Want the Ragin’ Cajun in His Classic Purple

Taylor Kitsch as Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (L) Gambit in Marvel Comics (Center) and Channing Tatum in Blink Twice (R)
20th Century Studios/Amazon MGM Studios

Gambit is an iconic member of the X-Men, mainly due to his inclusion in the X-Men: The Animated Series roster. He’s had a recent bump in popularity too, thanks to his bigger role in X-Men ’97 on Disney+. However, he barely appeared in the Fox X-Men films, showing up only in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, played by Taylor Kitsch. But in that movie, he was barely a supporting player, and looked more like a lost member of Blues Traveler. If rumors are true and Channing Tatum will finally appear as Remy LeBeau in Deadpool & Wolverine, we want to see him in his purple colors and weird cowl, charging up playing cards.

X23’s Wolverine Costume Needs to Appear On Screen

(L) Dafne Keen as Laura in Logan (R) the Wolverine version of Laura from the comics.
20th Century Studios/Marvel Comics

Dafne Keen stole the show as Laura, the child of Wolverine created by science, in 2017’s Logan. She was only a little kid when she made that film, which featured her father Wolverine sacrificing himself and his young child carrying on in his name. But Dafne Keen isn’t a little kid anymore, and if she appears in Deadpool & Wolverine, as is heavily rumored, we’d like to see the now grown-up X23 officially take up the mantle of Wolverine. And with the codename comes the costume. It could be an older version of Laura from the Logan universe, or a Multiversal variant. But we want to see her in the iconic yellow and blue just like dear old dad.

Cyclops’ Blue and Yellow Costume Should Join Wolverine’s Suit in Deadpool & Wolverine

The Cyclops costume designed by Jim Lee in 1991, and the one worn briefly in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse by actor Tye Sheridan. We'd love to see this Marvel comics accurate X-Men costume in the MCU.
Marvel Comics/20th Century Studios

Scott Summers, the X-Men member whom you may know as Cyclops, has had literally dozens of costumes in the comics. While we love Cyclops’ ‘70s/’80s blue costume, with the skullcap and the pirate boots, we believe it would be a hard one to pull off on-screen in the MCU. For many, his most iconic costume is his ‘90s Jim Lee-designed one, used in X-Men: The Animated Series. We almost got a version of this costume in a Marvel movie, as it was teased for a moment at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse. Of course, by the time of the next film, Dark Phoenix, Cyclops was wearing yet another suit. If James Marsden shows as up as Cyclops in Deadpool & Wolverine or Secret Wars, we think a proper version of his ‘90s X-Men costume is in order for the MCU. Although we’d like one with a more accurate color scheme than the X-Men: Apocalypse one that Tye Sheridan wore. That’s a good place to start.

We’d Love for Storm’s Epic Cape to Take Flight in the MCU

Storm's early 90s comic look, designed by Jim Lee, and Halle Berry as Storm in the first X-Men film.
Marvel Comics/20th Century Studios

For all of the major diversions costume-wise in the first X-Men movie, the costume worn by Halle Berry as Storm is pretty close to what the Marvel Comics presented. (That first wig, though? That’s another story). While we are partial to Ororo Munroe’s original costume designed by Dave Cockrum, we do think it would be hard to justify the headpiece, leather swimwear, and thigh-high boots in live-action. But Storm’s ‘90s look, designed by Jim Lee, is perfect to wear on screen. This costume is very similar to the first X-Men movie costume, only this time, we would want the MCU’s version to have yellow accents and the red X symbol on the shoulders. Sometimes in the comics, this costume looks like black leather, sometimes it’s all white. We’d happily take either one.

Magnetos Purple and Red Costume Needs to Make an On-Screen Appearance

Ian McKellen as Magneto in the first X-Men film, the Jim Lee version of comics Magneto, and Michael Fassbender as the character in X-Men: First Class. We'd love to see this Marvel comics accurate X-Men costume in the MCU.
20th Century Studios/Marvel Comics

Magneto has one of the best costumes in comics. When Jack Kirby nailed a design, he really nailed it. That’s why Mags had so few costume changes over the decades. But the movies always shied away from going for the full comics look when it came to the Master of Magnetism’s costume. The closest we ever got in terms of Marvel Comics’ accuracy was the costume at the very end of X-Men: First Class, where Michael Fassbender’s Magneto sported the classic comics helmet and his purple and maroon color scheme. But that was all done away with in the next film, X-Men: Days of Future Past. If Ian McKellen or Michael Fassbender do return in Deadpool & Wolverine, then let’s go full Kirby. Okay, maybe without the trunks. But the rest of it? Let’s go. It’s time to give Magneto the costume he deserves in the MCU.

Rogue’s Classic Marvel Comics Yellow and Green Suit Would Make a Splash

Rogue in her '90s Jim Lee era costume from the comics and the animated series, and Anna Paquin as Rogue from the X-Men films. We'd love to see a comics-accurate costume on Rogue in the MCU.
Marvel Comics/20th Century Studios

Anna Paquin’s Rogue was quite different from her comic book counterpart. She was very shy and unsure of her powers, a far cry from the version of Rogue most fans knew from the ‘90s X-Men cartoon series. We’ve heard that version described as “Dolly Parton, with the powers of Superman.” And that’s accurate. Rogue has had many costumes in Marvel Comics, most of them green and white. But If Paquin returns, now all grown up, we’d love to see her in the Jim Lee-designed costume from X-Men #1, later made famous by the animated show. It’s really Rogue’s best costume, the bomber jacket just works so well with the suit. This comics-accurate costume is easily translatable to the screen with very few tweaks, and we’d love to see it add a splash of color to the MCU’s X-Men lineup. We’re ready to see this Rogue costume in live-action, sugah.

Colossus’s Bodysuit Is the X-Men Costume the MCU Deserves

Colossus in his early 90s X-Men costume, his 2000s era comics look, and in the Deadpool films.
Marvel Comics/20th Century Studios

Piotr Rasputin, the X-Men’s Russian metal man Colossus, has been a key figure in the Deadpool movies, and is confirmed to return for the third film. As much as we love Stefan Kapičić in the role, that black and red costume is just not very Colossus to us. In Marvel’s X-Men comics and others, Colossus wore a red and yellow costume for much of the ‘70s and ‘80s, with big shoulder flares and thigh-high boots. Jim Lee later streamlined the design in the ‘90s. Maybe the best version of the Colossus costume was from the Astonishing X-Men series of the 2000s. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine costume seems inspired by Astonishing, so why not Colossus’ suit? We just know it’s time for Piotr to wear the red and yellow. We’d probably give the big lug some pants, though.

Phoenixs Firebird Emblem Should Rise On-Screen

Famke Jannsen in X-Men: The Last Stand, and Jean Grey in the pages of New X-Men. We'd love to see this Marvel Comics-accurate costume in the MCU.
20th Century Studios/Marvel Comics

Jean Grey has been a part of the X-Men since the very first issue in 1963, and has had dozens of costumes since then. Some are iconic, others are fashion nightmares. But while we’ve lobbied hard for the Jim Lee ‘90s costume designs for any possible X-Men returning in the MCU, Jean Grey’s outfit from this era is not a favorite. The shoulder pad armor, the headpiece, the padding on the legs? It’s all too busy. Maybe the MCU could pull off a version of this X-Men costume that works. But we’d prefer something that evokes Jean as Phoenix.

Of course, that means the classic firebird emblem, in yellow and green. We realize the classic Phoenix costume might be hard to pull off in live-action. It would be hard to justify those opera gloves, thigh-high boots, and gold sash. But in the mid-2000s, Jean wore a more practical version of the Phoenix red and green, which could work on screen. With two movies dedicated to Jean Grey not being able to control the Phoenix Force, it would be fun to see Famke Janssen totally in control of her powers in the MCU, and wearing something resembling her New X-Men-era costume.

Mystique’s Comics-Accurate White Dress Is Long Overdue for Its Debut

Mystique, as played by Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Laawrence, and the comic book Mystique
20th Century Studios/Marvel Comics

Mystique has been an iconic part of the X-Men film franchise since the very first film in 2000. She’s been played by Rebecca Romijn, and later, Jennifer Lawrence. But we think if Magneto returns, then Mystique should be right by his side. And if it’s Ian McKellen’s Magneto, then the original Mystique, Rebecca Romijn, should join him. Rebecca Romijn is currently killing it as Number One on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. And while we think at this point in her career, she probably doesn’t want to spend hours in the makeup chair being painted head-to-toe blue, she doesn’t need to. Because Marvel Comics’ Mystique wore clothes. We’d love to see Mystique’s iconic white costume from the comics appear in the MCU, complete with the tiny gold skulls. We got a tease of this comics-accurate costume in X-Men: Apocalypse, but the later movies never delivered. This one’s long overdue.

Wolverine first appeared in 1974’s Incredible Hulk #181 and Deadpool didn’t pop up in Marvel Comics until New Mutants #98 in 1991; however, the two characters are inextricably linked. Mostly, because even though their temperaments are polar opposites, Deadpool and Wolverine’s histories are very similar. The Weapon X project experimented on both of them. Wolverine was given his adamantium skeleton by the shadowy group, and Deadpool had Wolverine’s own healing factor grafted onto his DNA while battling cancer by Weapon X. But in most ways, this is where the similarities end. Let’s dive into Wolverine and Deadpool’s strange relationship and history, both in and outside of Marvel comics, before Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters in July.

Wolverine and Deadpool’s First Comics Together in the Marvel Universe

Wolverine #88, the first canonical fight between the two characters, and Wolverine Origins from 2008, the true story of Deadpool and Logan's first encounter.
Marvel Comics

In the regular Marvel Comics continuity, Wolverine and Deadpool first met in 1994’s Wolverine #88. That issue saw Deadpool trashing an apartment after failing to get his girlfriend back from her new guy, Garrison Kane. This brought Wolverine into the picture, as Kane was his buddy. After trading the usual verbal jabs, then came the actual jabs, with Wade stabbing Logan through the chest with his two swords. And that set the tone for Wolverine and Deadpool’s entire relationship in Marvel Comics—insulting each other, stabbing one another, getting back up again, and doing it all over again. Rinse, wash, and repeat.

Pages from Wolverine #88, the first fight between Deadpool and Logan.
Marvel Comics

But although Wolverine and Deadpool met for the first time in Wolverine #88, it’s also worth noting they briefly shared the comic page a year before the issue was published. In 1993’s Toys R Us X-Men Premium Edition, the X-Men encounter Deadpool for the first time. Logan and Wade don’t actually fight or talk, but they do share a big group panel together. So it kinda, sorta counts as Deadpool and Wolverine’s first comic book meeting.

Despite these temporal truths, years later retcons to Marvel’s universe determined that Wolverine and Deadpool had met much earlier than that, in-universe at least. In 2008, Marvel revealed a new history for Deadpool and Wolverine. The pair’s first fight actually happened when the Winter Soldier, still a brainwashed Hydra agent, hired Wade to take out Logan. This was all in an effort to draw out Daken, Wolverine’s son, who ultimately saved him. This occurred in 2008’s Wolverine Origins story “Deep End.”

The Best Wolverine and Deadpool Comics to Read in Order to Understand the Pair’s History

Milestone issues of Deadpool and Wolverine, including 1999's Deadpool #27, Deadpool/Wolverine: The Decoy, and Old Man Logan vs. Deadpool.
Marvel Comics

Deadpool and Wolverine have alternately fought and then teamed up in several comics over the past three decades, which makes for one interesting trip down comics’ history lane. In one infamous fight in 1999’s Deadpool #27, Wade fought Logan as a form of therapy for depression. The Deadpool vs. Old Man Logan mini-series, meanwhile, found Wade Wilson getting into it with the cranky gray-haired version of Logan. In Wolverine/Deadpool: The Decoy, a two-faced killer robot from space wanted to kill Jean Grey for all of her Phoenix shenanigans. Since she was dead (at that time), Wolverine dressed up Deadpool as Jean Grey as a distraction until he defeated the killer robot. In Uncanny X-Force, the pair were true teammates at last. However, even with this new relationship, Wolverine and Deadpool still butt heads constantly.

Friends? Enemies? What Is Wolverine and Deadpool’s Relationship in the Marvel Comics?

Wolverine carries Deadpool on his back.
Marvel Comics

Wolverine and Deadpool were what we call “frenemies.” Sometimes they were literally trying to murder each other, and other times they seemed like best buds. Their first meetings were definitely adversarial, as seen in almost all their encounters in the ‘90s. By 1999, the pair fought a group of werewolves together, calling a truce. At the end of that story, Deadpool and Wolverine bonded over their mutual tortures at the hands of the Weapon X program and shared a beer. This was the start of an awkward friendship. Eventually, Logan invited Wade to join X-Force and, for the first time, Deadpool and Wolverine were officially teammates. But they still came to blows sometimes. We’ll likely see this dynamic come to life in the MCU’s Deadpool & Wolverine.

Who Would Win in a Fight, Wolverine or Deadpool?

Wolverine takes on Deadpool in a brutal fight.
Marvel Comics

With over a century and a half of his life and training behind him, Wolverine is likely the better fighter than Deadpool. Although the two have fought numerous times, it almost always ended in a stalemate. Wade Wilson’s healing factor may have been derived from Logan’s DNA, but he had a leg up on the adamantium-clawed mutant. Deadpool literally can’t die. Wade was cursed by Thanos with immortality because the Mad Titan was jealous of Deadpool’s relationship with his beloved entity of Death. So although Logan’s healing factor made it very hard to kill him, Wolverine could actually die. Deadpool, not so much.

Can Deadpool Kill Wolverine in the Marvel Universe?

Wolverine and Deadpool’s History and Relationship Explained Ahead of the MCU’s DEADPOOL 3 Movie_1

In the 2012 alternate timeline mini-series Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe, by writer Cullen Bunn and artist Dalibor Talajic, Marvel Comics finally showed a version of Wade Wilson who managed to kill Wolverine. Taking place on an alternate Earth in the multiverse, this comic featured a supervillain brainwashed Deadpool, who killed every known Avenger and X-Man. Only Wolverine was left standing at the end. Not for long though, as Deadpool found a way to kill Wolverine in this Marvel reality. In this story however, he needed a carbonadium sword to do it, as that metal is the only one on Earth that can nullify Logan’s healing factor. So yes, Deadpool could kill Wolverine. He just needs a little carbonadium help.

Who Heals Faster, Wolverine or Deadpool? Their Healing Factors Compared

Deadpool got his powers when Department K infused him with Wolverine’s mutant DNA. Yet his healing factor was ultimately superior to Logan’s. Wolverine’s healing factor can’t regrow lost limbs, for example. Deadpool’s healing factor allows him to regrow any lost and severed limb. Deadpool’s healing factor will even allow him to regrow his head. Wolverine’s wounds do heal, but his powers stop short of recreating actually lost cells out of thin air. Deadpool has the superior healing factor in this regard. Probably much to Wolverine’s annoyance—we bet it’s a sore spot in their relationship.

Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool/Wade Wilson in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Twentieth Century Fox

Ryan Reynolds’ first appearance as Deadpool actually came in the much-derided X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009. In that continuity, Wade Wilson was a mercenary with a metric ton of confirmed kills. He’s still a wisecracking motormouth, at least, at first. But unlike in Marvel Comics, Deadpool is a mutant fast enough to deflect bullets with swords. In the comics, he was born without the X-gene. But in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Deadpool was recruited into William Stryker’s mercenary Team X, along with Logan, and was eventually used by the Weapon X program as an experiment. Stryker infused his body with the DNA of several mutants, making him an undefeatable “mutant killer.” But he had his mouth sewn shut, so the famously talkative character became strangely mute. Let’s just say… the fans hated it.

Wolverine and Deadpool fought on Three Mile Island, but Logan defeated him. But we later saw that Deadpool’s severed head was still alive, and he winked at the camera. Luckily, X-Men: Days of Future Past rebooted the X-Men movie universe timeline, allowing the 2016 Deadpool to be closer to the comics. At the end of Deadpool 2, using Cable’s time travel device, Wade ventures into the events of X-Men Origins, shooting the previous Deadpool in the head. We have a strong feeling those time-travel shenanigans will play a part in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Hugh Jackman’s Logan Will Fight Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool in Deadpool & Wolverine

Logan and Deadpool fight it out in the Void in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Marvel Studios

Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds will meet again for the very first time in Deadpool & Wolverine. From what the trailers tell us, it looks like the Time Variance Authority sends Deadpool to a universe where Logan failed the X-Men in some significant way, almost certainly leading to their deaths. Logan’s drowning his sorrows in a bar when Deadpool shows up to recruit him on a mission to save his own universe—possibly from being deleted entirely.

The pair then end up in the Void, the reality where the TVA dumps the remnants of pruned timelines. We know that after they fight each other, they fight Cassandra Nova, Charles Xavier’s evil twin. Aside from those facts, we know Logan and Deadpool will slice, stab, kick, and punch each other. Regardless of where they are in the multiverse, some things remain constant as their ongoing history and relationship continues to unfold. We can’t wait to see Deadpool and Wolverine, confirmed frenemies, take on the MCU.

One of the big surprises of the first Deadpool & Wolverine trailer was seeing Aaron Stanford reprising his role as Pyro from X2: X-Men United and X-Men: The Last Stand. While we expected (and still expect) most of the mainline X-Men team from the original Fox films to appear in some form, it looks like some “deep cut” characters from the Fox Marvel films are popping up too. Here are the Fox X-Men characters we hope will make a cameo in the TVA’s pruned timeline wasteland known as the Void in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Lady Deathstrike (Kelly Hu) From X2: X-Men United (Confirmed)

Kelly Hu as Lady Deathstrike in X2 (L) Lady Deathstrike in Marvel Comics (Center) and Kelly Hu in The Orville (R).
Twentieth Century Films/Marvel Comics

Although she didn’t say a word, Kelly Hu (The Orville) as Yuriko Oyama, also known as Lady Deathstrike in X2: X-Men United, left quite an impression. Especially on Wolverine, who she stabbed with her claws multiple times. The Japanese mutant had similar powers to Logan, and very similar adamantium claws as well. We’d love to see her pop up in the Void, maybe this time wearing her classic costume from the comics. This is a rematch we’d all love to see. And maybe the film can allow her to talk this time! Is that too much to ask?

Happily, Lady Deathstrike’s appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine has been confirmed. But we aren’t certain yet who will play the character.

Angel (Ben Foster) From X-Men: The Last Stand

Ben Foster as Angel in X-Men: The Last Stand (L) Archangel in Marvel Comics (Center) and Ben Foster in the film Medieval.
Twentieth Century Films/Marvel Comics/Bioscop Films

As we said, we expect most of the major original X-Men cast to have cameos of some sort. And yes, this character in the comics is a major X-Man. However, in X-Men: The Last Stand, he barely spoke any lines. So he was not much more than a glorified cameo. But maybe the MCU could bring Ben Foster back as Warren Worthington III, a.k.a. the Angel, now lost in the Void? And if the movie really wanted to make fans go wild, it could turn him into his blue-skinned razor-winged persona of Archangel.

Psylocke (Olivia Munn) From X-Men: Apocalypse

Olivia Munn as Psylocke (L) Psylocke in Marvel Comics (Center) and Oliva Munn in the film The Predator could make cameo appearance in deadpool and wolverine movie
Twentieth Century Films/Marvel Comics

We have a hunch that most of the returns from the Fox Marvel-verse in Deadpool & Wolverine are going to be from the original X-Men trilogy, as those are the films Kevin Feige had a personal hand in. Also, the main First Class stars like Jennifer Lawrence and Nicolas Hoult might be busy these days. Having said that, there’s one character from X-Men: Apocalypse that Fox perfectly cast—Olivia Munn as the psychic ninja called Psylocke. The film totally wasted her, but it would be fun to see her fight with (or against) Wolverine and Deadpool in the Void.

Darwin (Edi Gathegi) From X-Men: First Class

Edi Cathegi in X-Men: First Class (L) Darwin the X-Man from Marvel Comics (Center) and Edi Cathegi in For All Mankind.

We love X-Men: First Class, but one of its character deaths was so ridiculous it has become a meme. The mutant Darwin was introduced in that film, played by Edi Gathegi. His power was the ability to evolve to adapt to any situation. But for some reason, he couldn’t adapt to Sebastian Shaw’s powers and died unceremoniously. It was a totally lame way for such a cool character to go out. Let’s see his variant show up in the Void and maybe not die in some super dumb way this time. We know DC recently cast actor Edi Gathegi in Superman: Legacy. But hopefully, he gets one more spin in the Marvel world.

Caleb Landry Jones as Banshee in X-Men: First Class (L) Banshee in the pages of Marvel Comics (Center) and Calen Landry Jones in Dogman possible fox marvel cameo in deadpool and wolverine
Twentieth Century Films/Marvel Comics/Apollo Films

Banshee is another First Class alum who didn’t return for X-Men: Days of Future Past. Mystique said Xavier’s student Sean Cassidy was killed in between films. But this is superhero storytelling. Unless there’s a body, you ain’t dead. (And even then, maybe not). So we’d love to see Caleb Landry Jones put on the gliders of the sonic-powered mutant again. Although, this time in green. Sorry, green and yellow are just Banshee’s colors. Marvel never portrayed Sean Cassidy as a teenager in the comics, so luckily, Caleb Landry Jones is now the perfect age to play a comics-accurate version of the Irish X-Man.

Madrox the Multiple Man (Eric Dane) From X-Men: The Last Stand

Eric Dane as Madrox in X-Men: The Last Stand (L) Madrox in the pages of Marvel Comics (Center) and Eric Dane in HBO's Euphoria.
Twentieth Century Films/Marvel Comics/HBO

The 2006 film X-Men: The Last Stand overflowed with mutant cameos, some better than others. One perfectly cast role was Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane as Jamie Madrox, the Multiple Man. As his name suggests, Jamie can replicate himself into an infinite amount of identical copies. He was used better than most of the mutants in the third X-Men film, even if he was inexplicably a bad guy. But maybe he pops up in the Void, and lends Deadpool and Wolverine a hand for a great Fox X-Men character cameo. The leader of the Marvel mutant team X-Factor certainly has plenty of hands to spare.

Honorable Mention: The Human Torch (Chris Evans) From Fantastic Four 2005

Chris Evans as the Human Torch in Fantastic Four (L) the Human Torch in Marvel Comics (Center) and Chris Evans in The Gray Man.
Twentieth Century Films/ Marvel Comics/Netflix

We know we’re focusing on the X-Men films, but there’s nothing to say that other Fox heroes won’t make a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine. After all, Jennifer Garner as Elektra is in this movie. So with all the speculation that Chris Evans is returning to the MCU, wouldn’t it be hilarious (and very Deadpool) if Evans reappeared, but as Johnny Storm, the Human Torch? He loves playing that character, and we’d love to see hothead Johnny annoy the ever-living crap out of Wade and Logan. We know Michael Chiklis is not coming back as the Thing, but we know we’d love to see Chris Evans yell “Flame on!” just one more time.

Logan is dead. Long live Wolverine. Hugh Jackman’s iconic big-screen character is truly back—rather than just his shadow—in the newest trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine. Only, he’s not the hero we remembered. Deadpool & Wolverine brings us a very different Wolverine than the one we once knew. He’s a failure. But his foul-mouthed friend wants to give him a shot at redemption. Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool needs to save his world, and he needs Logan to do that.

This definitely ain’t your grandma’s Disney. Or your mom’s. Or, you know, anyone’s. The MCU’s first R-rated film is here to do anything it wants. Well, anything it wants except cocaine. According to its trailer, that’s apparently the line Deadpool & Wolverine can’t cross, per Kevin Feige. That lack of “disco dust” doesn’t look like it’s going to stop Deadpool and Wolverine from having a hell of a good time together, though.

This Deadpool & Wolverine trailer is full of movie references (Fury Road!) and action. It’s also our first real look at Emma Corrin’s terrifying villain, Cassandra Nova. But most importantly this trailer offers our first insight into the actual plot, which will see Deadpool recruit a Wolverine Variant to help him save his dimension.

Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds walk down a street in Deadpool & Wolverine
Marvel Studios

The trailer even brings us some of the surprise Deadpool & Wolverine cameos we’re expecting to see. But it does leave space for many, many more. Who created that sorcerer portal the two jumped through? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Deadpool & Wolverine comes from Stranger Things‘ Shawn Levy. The movie will mark his third time directing Ryan Reynolds (Free Guy, The Adam Project). While Levy has said this film is not Deadpool 3, it still features many returning stars from the previous two Deadpool entries. Those back for more f***ing fun include Karan Soni, Morena Baccarin, Stefan Kapičić, Brianna Hildebrand, Leslie Uggams, Rob Delaney, and Shioli Kutsuna. Matthew Macfadyen is also joining the fray as a new TVA agent.

Deadpool & Wolverine join forces—one a little more reluctantly than the other—this summer on July 26, 2024. Long live friendship. And hopefully Wade’s world.

Hugh Jackman was adamant that Logan would be his final time playing Wolverine. He surely meant it when he said it. But we always know that no matter how much a performer might truly believe they are done with a character, people can always change their mind. We also know comic book superheroes never stay dead for long. Plus, he said all of that before Disney surprised everyone by buying Fox and its big screen rights to both the X-Men franchise and Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth. That’s a big reason Jackman is back doing something he swore he never would. And we finally got to see him in his iconic role during this year’s Super Bowl, which aired Marvel Studios long-awaited first trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine.

Well, we at least got to see his shadow.

“Everyone deserves a happy ending.” That’s an official tagline from Disney. Disney.

Seeing Deadpool teaming up with the Mouse House is almost as good as seeing him teaming up with Wolverine, as the first-ever rated-R MCU movie is officially on the clock. The franchise’s only 2024 big screen release (and its de facto X-Men Origins: Wolverine reunion) finally gave fans of both Deadpool and Wolverine the trailer they’ve been craving during the NFL’s championship game.

It opens with Wade and his silly wig celebrating his birthday with both the (still alive) members of Task Force X and his loved ones. But his entire world (and cinematic universe) is upended by the arrival of TVA agents. They officially bring the Merc With a Mouth into the MCU. From there he’s tasked with being a hero among heroes. He’s also among villains, as X-Men‘s Aaron Stanford shows up as a Variant of his character Pyro. He’s just one of the many Easter eggs from both franchises that pop up in this trailer.

Deadpool lying on the ground injured framed b Wolverine and his claws' shadow
Marvel Studios

That’s all prelude to the biggest moment, when Wolverine shows in costume after appearing earlier in the trailer from behind at a table. He finds Wade on the ground where Deadpool asks for help. Instead he gets adamantium claws. And we get the Deadpool movie we’ve always wanted.

Deadpool 3 comes from director and frequent Reynolds collaborator Shawn Levy. Bob’s Burgers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin are the duo behind the script. And the film also stars Karan Soni, Leslie Uggams, Emma Corrin, Matthew Macfadyen, Morena Baccarin, Stefan Kapicic, Rob Delaney, Brianna Hildebrand, and Shioli Kutsuna.

We need to see this movie right now. Unfortunately we have to wait. The movie doesn’t arrive in f***** theaters until this summer on July 26, 2024. Will it truly mark Jackman’s last time playing Wolverine? It wouldn’t matter even if he said it will. Thankfully.

Now that it’s 2024, expect the Deadpool 3 hype to go into hyperdrive. Even though we’re not halfway through January, Ryan Reynolds is already using every opportunity to remind us that the Merc with the Mouth returns this summer, with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in tow. Deadpool even appeared in the acceptance speech video for Ryan Reynolds’ show Welcome to Wrexham at the Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday, January 7. An awards show that, for some odd reason, was held the same night as the Golden Globes. You can watch the video right here:

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds‘ FX series Welcome to Wrexham racked up five wins at the 2023 Creative Arts Emmys. Among them was outstanding unstructured reality program. The acceptance speech video starts with Rob McElhenney doing the traditional “thanking everyone they’ve ever met” part. Then, Deadpool busts in (voiced, of course, by Reynolds) and does his whole shtick. He mocks the Creative Arts Emmys, and also the Golden Globes (“where the real celebrities are.”) Wade then begs the Motion Picture Academy to throw Deadpool 3 a bone next year—at least for some VFX awards. He knows the Academy would never nominate it for anything else.

As Deadpool 3 is the only MCU movie hitting this year, the pressure is on to perform well. Especially after 2023 released many misfires from Marvel Studios. But with Deadpool teaming up with a costumed-at-last Wolverine, Dogpool, and possibly several members of the X-Men, we think it’s not only going to buck recent downward trends, it will likely join the billion dollar club. And in the meantime, we’re going to see Deadpool across a lot of our screens to promote it any way he can. Deadpool 3, or whatever they end up calling the third Deadpool movie, hits theaters on July 26.

Leave it to Deadpool to give X-Men movie characters a last chance to live. We’re all pretty stoked for the MCU’s first true foray into the Fox-era characters with Deadpool 3. We already know Hugh Jackman will play Wolverine one more time in it (in comics-accurate costumes, no less), and that Jennifer Garner’s Elektra will hop over too. That’s fun! But all this X-nostalgia has made me think once again about the supremely flawed and uneven franchise as it was between 2000 and 2020. Over the course of 13 movies, the series ran the gamut between sublime and stinky. So I’m going to rank them, because I want to!

From left: Hugh Jackman and Dafne Keen in Logan; Deadpool and Colossus in Deadpool; Michael Fassbender in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
20th Century Fox

13. X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

Mouthless, bald Ryan Reynolds stands behind Hugh Jackman in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
20th Century Fox

The first solo adventure for Hugh Jackman’s Logan came in 2009, and it sure wasn’t good. And look, I know it was fashionable to crap on this movie for its weird pacing, terrible CGI, poor attempts at humor, and nerfing Deadpool, but it’s also accurate. Not a good movie. The one thing it did was prove Hugh Jackman could carry a movie, a thing we already knew by this point. Oh, and don’t get me started on how this movie alone messed up the continuity. Best to just forget this one.

12. X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

Cyclops (James Marsden) and Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) stare at each other before the end in X-Men: The Last Stand.
20th Century Fox

Following the departure of the franchise’s first super problematic director, they hired another super problematic director to helm the third movie. To say it’s messy is an understatement. They tried to put “The Cure” arc alongside “Dark Phoenix Saga,” and those two stories did not gel at all together. You get a lot of characters standing in a line opposite other characters standing in a line. It killed off Cyclops (sidebar: of all the characters done dirty by this franchise, Cyclops is perhaps the most egregious), completely wasted Angel, and nerfed Mystique. It also is unforgivable that it made the “I’m the Juggernaut, b****!” canon in a movie. So terrible.

11. Dark Phoenix (2019)

Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) tries to reason with Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) as the police look on in Dark Phoenix.
20th Century Fox

The second attempt at adapting the most famous X-Men comics arc is just as disappointing as the first. It’s less messy and more boring, but it still completely bypassed all the build up of what made the Phoenix Force interesting, and what makes the ending so tragic. Also, at this point, the timeline breaking down just makes no sense. Let’s hope they never do the Dark Phoenix Saga ever again. (I know they will.)

10. X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) uses his power to swirl the elements behind him in X-Men: Apocalypse.
20th Century Fox

Mercifully, the final X film from a very problematic director indeed. Despite very good films previous, this one—a third in the First Class timeline, more or less—just threw everything at the wall and hoped it stuck. It’s another enormous, messy hodgepodge of different X-characters and storylines. Oscar Isaac does his very best as the titular ancient mutant, and the new batch of Xavier students are okay, but it just turns into gloop. Another waste of Angel/Archangel; a major waste of Storm. And they had to turn Mystique into a main hero thanks to Jennifer Lawrence’s star power. Not even another frenetic Quicksilver sequence can save it.

9. The New Mutants (2020)

The New Mutants get up off the floor after a fight in the live-action movie.
20th Century

Okay, so here’s where I lose some of you. I didn’t see The New Mutants when they dumped it during the pandemic. Pandemic and all. In fact, I didn’t end up watching it until a month or so ago. And you know what? Yes, it’s hacked to all hell. Yes, the third act poops the woods (Demon Bear joke). But I thought it was pretty fun! Creepy vibe, decent characterization, plus it was just nice to see an X-Men movie that didn’t even try to reference Wolverine. Should have gotten more love, and it’s a shame the planned appearance of Jon Hamm as Mr. Sinister never happened.

8. Deadpool 2 (2018)

Deadpool has his arms around Domino and Cable, with his head lovingly on Cable's shoulder, while the other two look annoyed.
20th Century Fox

I’m gonna be real honest here: I was over Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool schtick pretty soon after the first movie came out. So while I was excited to see the sequel, I was wary of how annoying I found the character. The upsides were that the movie brought in a ton more X characters, and it was a joy to see Josh Brolin as Cable and Zazie Beetz as Domino. I could for sure use more of them in future installments. The downside? I’ve never been a big Deadpool guy and, like the character, the movie seems to think its way funnier than it is. But the X-Force skydiving joke is pretty amazing.

7. X-Men (2000)

Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen) play chess in the latter's plastic prison in X-Men.
20th Century Fox

Here is an example of a movie that is so much more important than it is still good. It definitely set the stage for the modern superhero movie era and finally gave us some live-action mutants. (Sidebar: yes, I remember the 1996 Generation X TV movie. That doesn’t count.) And the casting is, by and large, really great, with Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Hugh Jackman all standing out. But for all the good of the first X-Men, there’s always a sense that it’s half-apologizing for comic books being silly. In 2023, it’s just not as revolutionary as it once was.

6. The Wolverine (2013)

Hugh Jackman stands shirtless and ripped as hell in The Wolverine.
20th Century Fox

After X-Men Origins, I thought there was no way a solo Wolverine movie was going to be good. And then we get director James Mangold. A lot of this movie covers ground in the fan-favorite Frank Miller/Chris Claremont run of Wolverine in the ’80s, with his dealings with the Yakuza in Japan and various romances. I think it almost totally works. The ending is bad, I won’t argue it isn’t, but I think The Wolverine is still upper half of the movies. Jackman rules.

5. Deadpool (2016)

Deadpool, Colossus, and Negasonic Teenage Warhead on a Vancouver bridge.
20th Century Fox

Remember everything I said about the character of Deadpool earlier? That’s still true, but even with that, I cannot deny how good, how funny, how effective, and how fresh the first Deadpool movie felt. After years of development, Ryan Reynolds’ passion project got the go-ahead and made just a ton of money with its heavy violence and foul-mouthed frat humor. This is arguably the best page-to-screen adaptation of any comic book character. And its success is 100% the reason he’s not getting rebooted (really) for the MCU. I won’t hold this movie accountable for the Deadpool-ifying of other superhero movies, though I could.

4. X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

Poster for X-Men: Days of Future Past
20th Century Fox

The second most famous Uncanny X-Men comics arc (which was only two issues) ended up as one of the very best superhero movies of the era. I love the way this movie utilizes both timelines’ casts and sends the sole superstar character of Wolverine back in time to foil a future where sentinels take over the world. The Quicksilver “Time in a Bottle” sequence is still super great, and the finale where Magneto drops a stadium around Richard Nixon is wild and enormous, but manages to work because the characters are believable. Best use of Mystique in any movie. In my head cannon, this is the end of the franchise (Deadpool and Logan notwithstanding).

3. X2: X-Men United (2003)

Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming) attacks the president in X2: X-Men United.
20th Century Fox

I think it’s arguable this and Spider-Man 2 are the reasons superhero movies kept going. They’re not just successful, they’re really good. X2 took what worked about the first movie and focused on it and heightened it. Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler is excellent, Brian Cox as Stryker is really good, and we got maybe McKellen’s best Magneto performance. Wolverine gets center stage here for real and they let him do what he does best (and what he does best isn’t very nice). Just a great example of what the X-Men on screen could be.

2. X-Men: First Class (2011)

From left, Magneto, Banshee, Charles, Raven, Beast, and Havok in X-Men: First Class.
20th Century Fox

Matthew Vaughn’s lone foray into the X-universe really was a fresh start. Not only did it get a whole new cast to portray some of the characters who’ve been around a while, but setting it in the early 1960s, contemporary to when the comics first came out, brought in a new style, a new energy, to the mutants. Young, swaggery Charles Xavier as played by James McAvoy was a great choice to offset Stewart’s austere portrayal. Michael Fassbender’s Magneto was damn cool; could have watched a whole movie of Erik Lensherr, Nazi hunter. Above all, it proved the franchise, which had already gotten a bit stale and silly, could reinvent itself, which proved to be just what it needed to continue for another decade.

1. Logan (2017)

Hugh Jackman, looking old and disheveled, gets up from the desert dust in Logan.
20th Century Fox

Look, it was never going to be anything else at number one. Logan isn’t just a great X-Men movie. It isn’t just a great comic book movie. It’s a great movie, full stop. What was originally going to be the swansong for both Jackman and Stewart ended up a somber, elegiac reflection on regret and hope as Logan has to tend to a sickly Charles Xavier and try to save young, angry Laura Kinney (Dafne Keen). The action is as brutal as you’d hope with a Wolverine movie, and the story flows to a wonderful, sad conclusion. It’s the superhero movie as western, writ large. Took three goes, but Jackman really did make the best of this franchise.

Disney and Deadpool are an interesting match. And many people have been eagerly following Deadpool 3 news to better understand how the Disney-owned Marvel Studios and the previously Fox Entertainment Group’s Deadpool might come together. In previous, Kevin Feige promised that Deadpool 3 would be an MCU movie and that it would remain R-rated, a first for the franchise. And now, we get our first look at this odd-couple pairing. But it comes with an even odder, more exciting couple. Welcome, Deadpool, to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And in the same breath, welcome, Wolverine, to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And surprise, welcome Hugh Jackman as Wolverine to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Deadpool 3.

If you’re wondering what this means for Logan and Wolverine’s big screen continuity, though, don’t worry, they have answers. Sort of.

Yep, that’s right. What starts as just a casual video from Ryan Reynolds becomes so much more. Because we are getting our MCU Wolverine, baby. And that MCU Wolverine is going to be Hugh Jackman in Deadpool 3. For so long, everyone has been asking, who will play the MCU’s Wolverine? So, of course, the MCU had to answer with the most obvious answer that no one expected to hear. We don’t know if Jackman intends to continue to be the MCU’s Wolverine, but we’ll get him for at least for one more movie. Everyone’s heads are exploding right now in a way that will surely please Deadpool.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman Address the Logan/Deadpool 3 Question

Wolverine in his dying moments from Logan.
20th Century Studios

We thought we saw the end of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in Logan. (As did director James Mangold.) But this is a comic book character we’re talking about, after all, which means a surprise return is not only possible, it’s expected.

We still have questions, though, about what the Greatest Adamantium Showman’s return in Deadpool 3 means for the “end” of his story. Fortunately, Reynolds and Jackman are here to help address them…in exactly the way you’d expect.

Ah, yes, that clears everything up. Logan takes place years after Deadpool 3, and they both really like Wham! (Who doesn’t!) Jackman also recently noted to Sirius XM’s Radio Andy program:

Because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines, now we can go back, because…it’s science. And so I don’t have to screw with the Logan timeline, which was important to me, and I think probably to the fans, too.

Sounds like potential time travel is in the works. And what’s that about a device? For that answer and for answers to questions about the multiverse, the existence of mutants in Earth-616, and the million other queries we have, we’ll just have to wait.

R-Rated Deadpool and Wolverine in the MCU

In previous, Feige noted he felt excited to bring a “very different type of character [to] the MCU.” And Deadpool certainly is that, but also, he isn’t. In many ways, Wade Wilson and Ryan Reynolds both make a lot of sense in the world of the MCU. The franchise has already been pushing the envelope with entries such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This is the logical next step. There are, after all, plenty of kid-friendly options to choose from among the MCU’s many, many movies. And with High Jackman and Wolverine in the mix for Deadpool 3, we can’t wait for what’s certainly in store for us. This will no doubt also be a Wolverine like we’ve never seen him before.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman sitting on a couch acting out a fight between Deadpool and Wolverine
Ryan Reynolds

Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has appeared in an R-rated movie before. But we have a feeling Jackman’s Wolverine rendition in Logan and Deadpool 3 may feel a little different. Recently, Jackman shared more about what we could expect from the new MCU Wolverine. Will we see an angrier Logan or a gentler version of the character? Jackman responded with the obvious, saying:

“He’s definitely angrier, acerbic, grumpy, and he’s gonna take a lot of free shots at Ryan Reynolds, let me tell you… Physically, that is.” It definitely sounds like we’ll see a Wolverine that’s totally new. And that Deadpool better watch out. Reynolds recently confirmed this news, sharing with Variety, “What we pitched him was enough of a divergence from the character that he knows and the character that he’s left behind, that it gives him something completely new to play and something that he’s really excited to do.”

Additionally, Jackman recently offered more insight about the relationship between Deadpool and Wolverine in the MCU. He described the pair’s relationship to The Empire Film Podcast saying:

“10 being really close, zero being — that’s what we are, we are zero. We are opposites. Hate each other. He’s annoyed by him. Wants to be a million miles away from him or punch him in the head. So, unfortunately, he can’t be a million miles away from him in the movie, so I’m probably going to punch him in the head a lot… [They are] Polar opposites. He’s my vinegar to his sugar. He’s the fast-talking, quick-word loudmouth and my character just wants to punch him in the head.”

That’s a lot of punching, for sure.

Deadpool 3 and Phase 6 of the MCU

Jackman has said in previous that he won’t play Wolverine again and was retired from the role. But we guess the siren song of Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool, and the MCU called him back. He notes to Variety that he actually thought about it for a long time, but it took him longer to get onboard. In fact, Reynolds asked Jackman to come back as Wolverine for Deadpool 3 “on the daily” for approximately three years. And had nearly given up when Jackman finally agreed to return to the character.

As for Deadpool himself, we still don’t yet know if Deadpool will hail from a different multiverse in Deadpool 3 or if the move will explain he’s been kicking around the MCU all along, just out of sight. Either way, we are very happy to have him. And with Ryan Reynolds overseeing his long-time character, we’re confident he’s going to turn out just right. Not to mention, we can’t wait to see which of our MCU favs he (and now maybe Wolverine) eventually interact get to meet.

Deadpool 3‘s R-rated nature really does open the door to many new possibilities in the MCU. We wonder if Deadpool will remain a stand-alone R-rated arm, or whether other heroes will get to fight a little dirtier. We guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Deadpool 3, now with more Hugh Jackman Wolverine-fun, was slated to release on September 6, 2024. But now it will release on November 8, 2024. Although the MCU hasn’t said for sure, it could be that Deadpool 3 will kick off Phase 6 of the MCU, which begins with a “Fall 2024” release.

DC is crossing over with Marvel for an epic collection. No, not that DC. We don’t think we’re going to see one of those crossovers anytime soon. We mean DC Shoes and Marvel. They’re collaborating on Deadpool, specifically. Announced via the official Marvel site, this new collection of adult footwear and apparel showcases the Merc with the Mouth with vintage art from the original Marvel comic books. You can see several images of the extensive Deadpool collection below:

True to form, Deadpool breaks the fourth wall within the collection. Both the shoes and the clothing feature custom quotes and artwork of Deadpool poking fun at himself (as usual) and the DC Shoes brand. Everything in this collection is given the classic Wade Wilson treatment, from the box art and tissue paper to all the chimichanga references.

The standout of this collection is the Manteca shoe. It features a distressed waxed canvas to replicate Deadpool’s iconic red and black suit. Another standout is the Manual Hi with a digital print featuring original Deadpool comic book art from 1994. That just so happens to be the same year that DC Shoes launched as a brand. A range of DC Shoes’ best-selling Essential styles and wearable apparel staples for adults round out the Deadpool collection.

As a way of celebrating this collaboration, DC Shoes and Marvel created a new custom comic book—one where Deadpool travels back to 1994 and meets the DC Shoes team members. Besides being a milestone for DC Shows, that era marks when Deadpool began becoming a fan-favorite character in the X-Men titles. Although not for sale, 5,000 copies of this special comic will be distributed globally through giveaways and partnerships.

The Marvel X DC Shoes Collection will become available globally at select stores and at dcshoes.com on November 5.

Disney+ Parental Controls Are Here and R-Rated Movies Are Arriving https://nerdist.com/article/disney-plus-parental-controls-settings-breakdown-daredevil-moon-knight/ Thu, 21 Jul 2022 16:20:00 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=897068 DIsney+ has launched parental controls. Daredevil and co. are Disney+'s most mature content, rated TV-MA, and R-rated movies are arriving.

The post Disney+ Parental Controls Are Here and R-Rated Movies Are Arriving appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Disney+ has officially debuted its parental controls. And it looks like the main role of these settings is to keep the kids from watching Jon Bernthal kill a hundred people across The Punisher—and Daredevil season two. The streaming platform brought over seven of its Marvel TV shows, and most of them are very different in tone than their MCU counterparts. While it was pretty shocking that they weren’t headed to Hulu, it makes a lot of sense that the company wants to keep its Marvel content in one spot. And even more so that it would use the opportunity to unveil a very detailed set of parental control settings. When Disney+ first launched its full catalog was available on the standard-setting. And one other specific setting was available for kids. But now, even more options have arrived to narrow what users can see on the platform. Because yes, TV-MA shows now live on Disney+ and R-Rated entries like Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Logan are making their way onto the platform starting July 22.

At last parental controls are here. And this is what it means for those logging into Disney+.

A screenshot of Disney+ page with TV-MA

What New Content Settings Are Available With Disney+’s Parental Controls?

For starters, there are two major profile settings on Disney+: regular and kids. The latter profile contains just the younger content, from animated films to Disney Junior and Disney Channel staples. The account holder can also set an “exit question” to further keep kids from accessing more mature content. This setting requires anyone trying to leave a kids’ account to answer a question in order to do so.

But it’s the regular profile content settings that get interesting with new parental controls. There are a lot of content settings to choose from. A whopping nine of them. Of course, they start with the youngest level content: TV-Y; TV-Y7;TV-Y7-FV;G,T-VG; PG,TV-PG—which is more or less the kind of content on the kids’ profile setting.

Disney+ New Content Settings via Parental Controls update. The content ratings go from Disney+ TV-Y to R and TV MA shows.
Disney+

The remaining settings are PG-13, TV-14, R, TV-MA. Prior to activating the parental controls settings, the standard Disney+ profile fell into the PG-13/TV-14 category. It housed The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and West Side Story next to friendlier fare like Encanto. Now when you log into Disney+ and activate the parental control settings, you can flip to TV-MA, the highest setting. (TV-MA is the R-rating for TV and its highest maturity rating. For reference, Euphoria is rated TV-MA.)

What Disney+ Content Falls Under R and TV-MA?

While I want to talk about it forever, Disney does not want young eyes to see Vincent D’Onofrio take a guy’s head off with a car door in Daredevil. (However, they can see him wearing a Hawaiian shirt in Hawkeye.) At launch, there’s only one major difference between Disney+’s previous standard-setting and the R and TV-MA setting. And, of course, it’s Marvel’s TV fare (previously housed on Netflix.) Daredevil, Jessica Jones, The Punisher, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders are the only shows to land above the TV-14 rating.

Jessica Jones, Danny Rand, Matt Murdock, Luke Cage in Marvel's The Defenders. These shows rate TV MA on Disney+.
Netflix

Agents of SHIELD, which just joined the platform as well, rests comfortably in TV-14 land. (It was on network TV, after all.) And for other recent shows, it looks like Moon Knight and Obi-Wan Kenobi fall under TV-14 as well. Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Logan will begin to stream on the platform starting July 22 and they will be rated R.

How You Can Change Your Parental Controls Settings On Disney+

A screenshot of profile settings on Disney+. You can decide whether you want the profile to be able to access things like TV MA shows.
Disney+

If all this talk of parental controls has reminded you there are some profiles you need to amend, here’s how you can do it. Simply hover over your user icon on the platform and select “Edit Profiles” from the menu that appears. Then go to the profile you’d like to edit. Don’t worry, Disney+ will ask you to enter your password before making any changes. Once you do that, you’ll see a new “Content Rating” section. Clicking on that will bring you all the possible parental control options you can choose from. Happy toggling.

A More Mature Future for Disney+

Seeing R-rated (or TV-MA for that matter) associated with Disney+ surely raises some eyebrows. Famously Disney has never released an R-rated movie under its own brand. But it has a whole lot of subsidiary studios—especially since acquiring Fox. Currently, the first R-rated movies are making their way onto Disney+. And it certainly looks like the Mouse House streamer will continue to branch out. Does that mean Hulu will soon join Disney+ and create a US counterpart to the streaming platform’s Star global brand? (Yep, that means people around the world watched Pam & Tommy on Disney+.) Who knows, really. Hulu still boasts a whole lot of content, even if Disney has big plans for its more mature content on Disney+. But it’s food for thought.

Disney’s making a lot of changes to its streaming platform in the coming months, and I know I am very curious to see what it has in store.

Deadpool Saves the Day in a DOCTOR STRANGE Fan Edit https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-defeats-wanda-scarlet-witch-illuminati-scene-doctor-strange-multiverse-of-madness-fan-edit/ Tue, 12 Jul 2022 13:48:37 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=918399 A fan edit adds Deadpool to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, positing that he could take out Wanda in the Illuminati scene.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was one of the shorter Marvel movies in recent memory. But a fan edit suggests that it could’ve been even shorter if Deadpool was in the MCU. Including the obscene character as part of Earth-838’s Illuminati could have helped wrap up the conflict at just about the halfway point.

Some fan favorites and long-shot rumors did show up for the Illuminati scene. And you’re not alone if you fan-cast some others, too. Super-fan Saruhan Saral masterfully put Deadpool to work in the below video. The only unlikely thing about the minute-long scene is that adding him doesn’t also lead to MCU’s first audible F-bomb.

In the edit, the smartest man alive isn’t Marvel’s best-kept secret in ages. Also known as John Krasinski as Reed Richards a.k.a. Mr. Fantastic. Though Deadpool replaces him in the introductory scene, Mr. Fantastic is still alive and well on Earth-838. And stays that way this time around, thanks to Deadpool. Instead of being quickly unraveled into Play-Doh, Mr. Fantastic remains intact and his children still have a father.

Before Wanda can kill the Illuminati members, Deadpool sneaks up and takes her out. And the credits roll. It’s a fun take, though watching Scarlet Witch kill off Captain Carter, Captain Marvel, Black Bolt, and Professor X in turn was also somehow enjoyable in the movie. Yes, it was also horrifying, but still fun. At least the cloak was spared

Fan edit of Dr. Strange includes Deadpool sneaking up behind Wanda as she talks to the Illuminati
Mightyraccoon!

This may not be the end of Deadpool’s crossover with the MCU, as Korg gave him some honest advice about how to break in. And if fan edits are your thing, make sure you’ve seen Professor X shredding the rails in his yellow hover-chair rather than just slowly rolling out and providing backstory.

Easter eggs and much, much more!

Thanks to the powerful magic of organized sports we have a new Doctor Strange trailer. While we’ll be digging into that elsewhere, this piece is all about the poster released alongside it. The epic one sheet shows Strange in the midst of a shattering mirror. That aspect makes a lot of sense as we’ve seen Strange in his mirror universe, as well as mirrors as a representation of the multiverse before. But there’s more than meets the eye! After much zooming in and lots of late night exploring and comic book excavating, we’re here to talk about all the hidden Easter eggs. Organized from most clear and likely to most blurry and out there, this piece will dig into all the shadowy figures and faces that appear on the poster and what they could mean for the movie!

Read to the bottom of the piece to discover our poster key so that you can explore our finds!

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness new poster with easter eggs
Marvel Studios

1. Let’s Start with the Obvious

We’re beginning with the most recognizable here: There are multiple versions of Strange, Wanda, Wong, Baron Mordo, Christine Palmer, and America Chavez throughout the shattered mirror. That makes sense as we’re about to embark on a multiversal journey, so we could potentially meet more than one version of each. It’s interesting to note that at least one version of each character is screaming. That makes us think that Sam Raimi’s horror chops are going to be putting our faves through hell. We also see an eye that looks like it belongs to Shuma-Gorath/Gargantos. There’s also a couple of Darkhold’s and Strange’s broken watch!

2. Defender Strange

A still from the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer shows Defender Strange wearing a red and black costume with his hair pulled back in a ponytail falling through a portal
Marvel Studios

This one shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise as we’d already spotted Defender Strange in the earlier trailer. The ponytailed alt-universe Strange will likely be from a different multiverse. And his moniker—confirmed by an action figure—means in his world he was likely part of the comic book team known as the Defenders. You might know that name from the Marvel Netflix shows, but in the original lineup they consisted of Strange, Namor, Hulk, and the Silver Surfer. You can see him in the piece of mirror just to the left of Stephen’s head. We know it’s not normal Stephen as he has white stripes in his hair and his mustache doesn’t connect to his—in his universe—non-existent beard! There are also multiple Defender Stranges across the poster.

3. Captain Carter’s Shield

A still from What If shows Peggy Carter in her Captain Carter costume holding a giant sword, stabbing it into the ground
Marvel Studios

Down in the right hand corner this is one of the most obvious Easter eggs. Captain Carter’s shield played a huge part in What If…? and we had a feeling we might see it and her in the Multiverse of Madness. This seems to hint that theory was right. Strange and Captain Carter are already connected thanks to the events of that series, so this would make a lot of sense.

Captain Carter from Multiverse of Madness
Marvel Studios

We’ve now even glimpsed the iconic shield in a recent Multiverse of Madness trailer.

4. Rintrah

A still from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness shows Rintrah a green Minotaur standing in front of the camera
Marvel Studios

On the left hand side just under that monstrous eye there’s the head of a Minotaur. Thanks to toy releases and the new trailer we can probably assume this is Rintrah. In the comics Rintrah is an interdimensional magical being from the planet R’Vaal. He has lived and worked with Doctor Strange in the comics, and in the trailer seems to be living in Kamar-Taj. It’s unclear here if this is a statue of him or a particularly detailed photo, but either way he’s there looking strong.

5. Frankenstrange

A still from the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer shows a monsterous version of Steven Strange played by Benedict Cumberbatch
Marvel Studios

We don’t have an official name for the monstrous—potentially undead—version of Doctor Strange that appeared most clearly in the broadcast Super Bowl TV spot yet. So we’re calling him Frankenstrange. Under the left hand side of Strange’s flowing Cloak of Levitation you can see a sharp shard, which shows a face with a large cut above its eye. It looks a lot like that creepy monster version of Strange who makes a quick appearance at the end of the trailer.

6. Ultron / Ultron Robots

Ultron in Age of Ultron.
Marvel Studios

In the midst of the mirror breaking chaos, near the right hand center of the poster we can see a large gleaming piece of mirror. Within it there’s a robotic face that looks a lot like Ultron. What makes this egg more intriguing though is the fact that the new trailer shows Ultron-esque robots taking Strange to an intimidating new location. So is this James Spader’s killer cyber-villain? Or is it one of the new Ultron-looking robots from the trailer? We’ll have to wait and see.

7. Deadpool

Deadpool with his hand over his mouth
Disney

This is the big one, kid! Yep, along with the trailer that seemed to reveal Patrick Stewart would be joining the MCU as Charles Xavier, it looks like we’ve got our first official look at Deadpool. This is a pretty clear image, and you can see it on the left hand center top of the poster. In the shard we see a reflection of Deadpool. It looks like a promo shot similar to the one where he has his finger over his mouth in a shush position. Do we think the Merc with a Mouth is going to be cracking wise to Stephen Strange? Probably not, but is Marvel Studios having a lot of fun now that the Multiverse has truly opened up… definitely!

8. Chthon

A still from a marvel comic shows Chthon leering at the reader
Marvel Comics, Mike Perkins, Andy Troy

If you look above Stephen Strange’s head you may notice a sharp shard, which seems to stand out against the color palette. In it we see a strange creature, whose face seems to be made up of multiple layers of muscle. If we look to the Carnage comics from 2017—by Gerry Conway, Mike Perkins, Andy Troy, and Joe Sabino there is a version of the character Chthon who looks very similar to what we see in the poster. That would fit in to the Multiverse of Madness as Chthon is the creator of the Darkhold. We know that magical book will play a large part in this movie and the MCU going forward.

9. A New Photon / Captain Marvel Logo

Monica's eyes glow blue while she does the superhero landing pose
Marvel Studios

On the left hand side of poster near the lower corner there’s an image that will immediately seem familiar to fans of Captain Marvel. It looks like a new version of the Mar-Vell, Captain Marvel, or in the MCU Nova Corps logo. We’re thinking it’ll likely be connected to Monica or Maria Rambeau. In the comics the former was the original Captain Marvel, and is now super powered in the MCU. Her mother Maria was Carol’s partner who we think may have been in the new trailer for Multiverse of Madness. If that is the case then it looks like in one universe it was Maria who got the Captain Marvel powers instead of Carol…

10. Stryfe’s Helmet

An image from the X-Men comics shows Stryfe wearing a large helmet
Marvel Comics, Jae Lee, Al Milgram, Glynis Oliver, Steve Dutro

Seeing as we’re going all out X-Men here, this mask makes a lot of sense. It also makes us REALLY excited. On the left hand side of the poster, middle-low there’s a mask. It’s a silver mask with a rounded dome and spiked sides. If you’re a fan of the Summers Family—Scott, Alex, Nathan, Rachel, Gabriel, and more—then you’ll likely recognize the accessory. In the comics Stryfe is a clone of Nathan Summers A.K.A. Cable. In some of his forms he wears a mask that looks a lot like the one we see here, even if slightly more exaggerated. Seeing as there’s another Summers on this poster, this feels notable… it’s also ’90s AF and we are here for it!!

11. Cyclops

A promo shot from the Fox X-Men movies shows James Marsden as Cyclops
Disney, Fox

We’re getting into the weeds here, but this is our last not really that blurry one, so enjoy it. Up around the top left hand corner you can see a silvery shard. In it is what looks to be a screaming head with a visor on, a visor that I am here to argue looks a lot like Cyclops. We know Charles is back so this really isn’t that wild, especially if Charles is from a universe that has already been destroyed or had casualties from multiversal shenanigans. Perhaps this is the Charles who killed all his X-friends in Logan? Either way, Cyclops does not look happy here. But yay! Cyclops in the MCU, or at least on an MCU poster! What a time to be alive!

12. Loki

a still from loki shows Tom Hiddleston as Loki wearing a gold headress with horns and a badge that says Loki for President
Marvel Studios

Sure, it’s more likely that Loki will turn up than Cyclops, but his appearance here is blurrier than the X-Men’s most serious boy so that’s why he’s lower on our list. Also this little sliver—which sits under Captain Carter’s shield—seems to show a different Loki. The gold headdress makes it clear that we’re seeing the God of Mischief, but it looks more like President Loki rather than the classic Tom Hiddleston version. That would make sense as we’re obviously dealing with variants here. Also the placement of this Loki shard next to what we think is a very thematically resonant one would back this up… but we’ll get to that at the end of the piece.

13. M.O.D.O.K.

A still from a Marvel Comic shows M.O.D.O.K a giant head that flies around in a strange machine
Marvel Comics, Jack Kirby

Animation fans just saw the Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing in Hulu’s show. And in this poster at the bottom right hand corner—truly an egg heaven—we think you can see a mini M.O.D.O.K. This is going just off his famed headdress, which appears to be visible here. Interestingly, this figure seems to appear again in another reflection. Also, just to cover our bases here, the blurry headdress shape could possibly evoke Nova… but we love M.O.D.O.K. so we’re sticking with it.

14. Movie Juggernaut

If you’ve ever seen X-Men: The Last Stand, then you likely can’t forget Vinnie Jones’ iconic turn as the Juggernaut and his famed line “I’m the Juggernaut, b****h!” We think that you can see him here, with a lot of zooming in on the bottom right hand side. His red helmet and his face are visible as well as a little of what might be his chest. This Easter egg leans into the recent reveal that Charles Xavier might be back in Multiverse of Madness, but we doubt the Fox iteration of the Juggernaut will be back on our screens anytime soon. And for that we are grateful.

15. The Mighty Thor

the cover for Mighty Thor #1 shows Jane Foster as Thor in a giant epic cape holding thors hammer wearing a mask
Marvel Comics, Russell Dauterman

This is definitely the blurriest of our catches and therefore hits at the bottom of our list. Under the Captain Carter shield where there are a lot of little eggs, we can see a silvery mask. It looks really similar to the half-face mask that Jane Foster wears when she becomes the Mighty Thor. We know that Jane will be in Thor: Love and Thunder and will hold Mjölnir, so this isn’t a stretch. Though as it’s such a small and subjective catch, we’re not making any concrete claims.

So who will appear in the Multiverse of Madness? Do the appearance of characters previously licensed by Fox mean we’ll see them in the movie? Or is this poster just having fun with the Multiverse of it all?

We’ll have to wait until the movie hits on May 6 to find out!

Poster Key

If you’re wondering what on Earth we’re talking about we’ve made you this special poster key. Each number corresponds to a different shard / element of the poster. We’ve circled and numbered them below. Our tip would be for the best high quality, least pixelated zooming in experience use your phone rather than your computer! Most importantly have fun!!

Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds are reteaming yet again. Their latest collaboration, The Adam Project just hit Netflix and the pair are already up for their next great adventure. Featuring the Merc with a Mouth, no less. Levy is reportedly directing Deadpool 3. This is the third film for Levy and Reynolds, who first teamed together for the 20th Century film, Free Guy. Given the track record for this pairing, we now have very high hopes for Deadpool 3. (It’s Deadpool, so we were already mad hype, to be honest.)

According to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news, Bob’s Burgers writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin are penning the script. (Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick wrote the first two Deadpool films.)

It’s been nearly four years since we last caught up with Wade Wilson. And we wondered when we’d see him again. Notably, this is the first Deadpool film since Disney acquired Fox—which included 20th Century Fox, Deadpool‘s studio home. The Venn diagram between the classic Disney brand and Deadpool are probably more akin to two circles drawn next to each other on a piece of paper. (Any overlap is strictly fan-based.) Famously, Disney has never released anything with an R-rating. And what is Deadpool if not fully basking in the R-rating?

But luckily, it sounds like Deadpool gets to keep its raunchy touch. Curiously, I wonder if it’ll fall under 20th Century Studios, the Disneyfied version of its predecessor studio. (That it shares a studio with the Ben Affleck movie Deep Water makes a hell of a lot more sense than bunking with live-action Dumbo.)

Deadpool looks shocked with his hands on his masked face
20th Century Studios

But with Deadpool officially back under the greater Disney umbrella, could it now be a Marvel Studios film? I, personally, would love to see Deadpool and Doctor Strange in a room together. It sounds like it would be pure chaos. If Deadpool is (probably) back-flipping over to the MCU, how long must we wait for the previous two films to flee Hulu for Disney+? Certainly not before March 16, when they can be fully locked under the streaming platform’s new parental controls.

Deadpool 3 doesn’t have a release date yet—and we still don’t know who from the cast is joining Ryan Reynolds. But we’re on the lookout and will update with more details soon.

Ryan Reynolds Apparently Pitched Disney a DEADPOOL/BAMBI Short Film https://nerdist.com/article/ryan-reynolds-pitched-disney-deadpool-bambi-short/ Thu, 05 Aug 2021 15:57:06 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=830559 Ryan Reynolds pitched Disney a Deadpool/Bambi short film idea, and the reason they turned it down is exactly why it would be amazing.

It will always be weird that Deadpool is officially a Disney character. But rather than shy away from the vulgar Merc With a Mouth, the Mouse House has embraced the character. He appeared in a promo for Free Guy with the Thor: Ragnarok‘s Korg. And the MCU’s head honcho Kevin Feige has said Deadpool is eventually joining the franchise. That doesn’t mean he can go anywhere he wants at the Happiest Place on Earth, though. Disney has some limits for how it’s willing to use the super antihero. Like letting him profess his love for a detestable character. The company rejected a pitch from Ryan Reynolds for a Deadpool short film starring the hunter who killed Bambi’s mother.

Deadpool looks shocked with his hands on his masked face20th Century

Reynolds told IGN he tried selling Disney on a short where he interrogated one of the greatest villains in movie history. He wanted Deadpool to question the hunter who killed Bambi’s mom. That premise sounds both dark and hilarious enough on its own. But the twist would have made it even better. “The whole gist of it is that Deadpool is actually just a huge fan,” Reynolds said. “He’s not interrogating. He just wants to know how he could be the most loathed Disney character in the history of Disney.”

Wow. That is genuinely great and we very much want to see it. Disney did not feel the same way, though. Reynolds’ new employer allegedly said, “Well, I don’t think that’s ever going to happen.”

Bambi looks at a yellow butterfly on its tailDisney

We’re not surprised by that. Having Deadpool side with one of cinema’s most loathsome figures isn’t exactly the best way to endear Deadpool to a new audience. That doesn’t lessen our disappointment that this short won’t happen.

However, the idea may have helped Disney say yes to his Korg idea, which Reynolds pitched after his Bambi short was shot down. The promo for Free Guy, a movie starring Korg himself, Taika Waititi, is perfect. And it shows that Disney can and will find ways to make Deadpool a part of the studio’s future.

That future just won’t include him praising Disney’s most vile villains.

Ryan Reynolds Gets Disturbingly Swole in New FREE GUY Ad https://nerdist.com/article/ryan-reynolds-swole-free-guy-ad/ Tue, 03 Aug 2021 18:24:30 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=830000 Ryan Reynolds gets disturbingly buff in a brand new ad for Free Guy. Sadly, he can't fit into his Deadpool costume for this one.

The promotion for Ryan Reynolds’ upcoming movie Free Guy have been, well….very Ryan Reynolds. First, there was his most recent promo for the movie, where he reprises his role of Deadpool, along with the MCU’s Korg. He’s now followed that ad up with something even weirder. Goodbye Merc with the Mouth, say hello to DUDE. Yeah, just “DUDE.” He doesn’t have a catchphrase yet, so his catchphrase is just “catchphrase.” This super swole version of Ryan Reynolds‘ character now stars in his own (mildly disturbing?) ad for Free Guy.

You can watch the whole ad right here:

Just seeing Ryan Reynolds’ face CGI-ed onto a mega-ripped body is unsettling enough. But then DUDE talks, and it’s kind of worse? But worse in a good way. DUDE talks about how ripped he is, and how his workout routine consisted of maybe one week total. All it took was a “protein bomb” made of actual human muscle. Totally organic of course.

Ryan Reynolds also “goes there,” so to speak, joking that his youngest daughter with Blake Lively (fathered while in DUDE form of course) was born as a full grown adult. And also wearing shoes of course. We can only imagine the embarrassment that kid is going to feel when they’re old enough to see this ad. Yikes.

Ryan Reynolds as Free Guy's super buff character DUDE.

20th Century Studios

Of course, there’s the obligatory Deadpool reference. DUDE says that he simply is too buff now to fit into that red and black costume. But such is the price of a body built like that of Hercules. (We still want to see him try to fit into the suit though). We’re not sure how big a part the disturbing yet hilarious DUDE has in the actual movie, but the ad has pretty much sold us on him.

We’ll see DUDE in all his glory on the big screen when Free Guy hits theaters on August 13.

Deadpool Makes His First MCU Appearance Alongside Korg… for FREE GUY https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-korg-free-guy-reaction-mcu/ Tue, 13 Jul 2021 18:46:51 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=824984 Deadpool finally met his first character from the MCU. In perhaps the most unexpected way imaginable, as a reaction video to a Ryan Reynolds movie.

The post Deadpool Makes His First MCU Appearance Alongside Korg… for FREE GUY appeared first on Nerdist.

Ever since Disney bought Fox, people have been wondering just when the heck Deadpool 3 was coming. Or, in other words, when the heck Deadpool was officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Well, in a very unexpected way, he just has. In a new promotion for the upcoming Ryan Reynolds movie Free Guy, Thor: Ragnarok favorite Korg joins the Merc with the Mouth for the first MCU/Deadpool crossover.

Together, the two make a “reaction video” parody video, where they watch the trailer for the movie, and snarkily comment along. You can watch the full hilarious Free Guy “reaction video,” featuring the voices of Ryan Reynolds and Taika Waititi, right here.

And here, we all thought that Pietro in WandaVision was going to be the first X-Men universe/MCU crossover. But nope, it was this promo video for a non-Marvel based film. So of all the MCU characters who could have interacted with Deadpool first, why Korg? Well, the voice of Korg, Taika Waititi is actually in Free Guy. So that’s your answer right there.

In his trademark fashion, Deadpool finds a way to mock not just the movie he’s there to promote, but also the recent success of the MCU on Disney+. He even takes shots at Deadpool 2. And he cracks a joke that Free Guy is just something leftover from a “fire sale” after Disney bought 20th Century Studios from Fox. Ouch. There might be a little truth to that wisecrack. It still looks like a fun movie regardless of said Fire Sale though.

Deadpool and Korg "react" to the Free Guy trailer.

In any event, this actually makes us long for an official Deadpool/Korg meeting on the big screen. At some point, Deadpool 3 is going to be a reality. Why not team him up with a bunch of random minor characters from the MCU? Korg can be there. Maybe resurrect the Warriors Three from the Thor franchise. They really deserved better.

Free Guy hits theaters exclusively on August 13.

Comic and manga fans unite! It’s time to celebrate! Why? Well, Viz and Marvel have just announced something that we’ve previously only dreamed of. After the success of Marvel Japan’s collaboration with Shueisha, the comic book titans are teaming up with manga powerhouse VIZ for a series of Marvel manga. The new series of books and stories will feature fan-fave Marvel characters drawn by the best mangakas in Japan. Read on to find out more about what’s in store!

[Embargoed til - 4/22 - 9AM ET] Marvel and VIZ Are Releasing a Line of Marvel Manga!_1

Marvel Comics, VIZ Media

The thrilling collaboration will start with an English language release of Marvel Meow. You might have seen Nao Fuji’s lovely cartoons on Marvel’s Instagram. Some of the cute cartoons also featured on a set of variant covers. What’s it about? It follows “Captain Marvel’s cat, Chewie, as she wreaks havoc in the lives of Marvel’s most popular characters: Spider-Man and Iron Man, formidable villains Thanos and Galactus, and the whimsical antihero, Deadpool—all becoming the playthings of this capricious cat!” Doesn’t it sound like the perfect comic?

If reading the name Deadpool got you excited then there’s more good news! Next year VIZ will be releasing the first official English translation of Deadpool: Samurai. The comic was one of the biggest selling manga in Japan on release. And US fans have been desperate to experience it. Well, now they can. “When the Merc with a Mouth found himself in feudal Japan partaking in samurai battles in the manga one-shot Deadpool: Samurai last year, fans agreed that the mash-up demanded more, leading Shonen Jump+ to announce an ongoing Deadpool series. For the first time ever, this popular series will be translated into English as part of this new publishing series, written by Sanshirou Kasama and drawn by Hikaru Uesugi.”

It’s a collaboration that both Viz and Marvel are as excited about as fans inevitably will be. The meeting of these two huge publishers is a major event. And it heralds a whole new era for superhero comics for North America. In a press release VIZ Editorial Director Sarah Fairhall shared her enthusiasm. “Much like VIZ’s iconic characters, Marvel heroes are universally beloved and VIZ is excited to bring their adventures to readers in a new way. Our collaboration will include English editions of several Shonen Jump manga titles, as well as some all-new publishing and ShoPro’s Marvel Meow.”

Sven Larsen, Vice President of Licensed Publishing, at Marvel echoed Fairhall’s excitement. “Marvel has had a long history of telling stories in new and compelling ways, and Viz is the perfect partner to help us continue that path. Viz is best-in-class for its unforgettable stories, and after the massive success of last year’s Deadpool manga, we’re thrilled to now be working with them to bring our iconic characters to even more manga fans everywhere.”

If these are at the top of your to-read list, here’s when you’ll be able to grab them: Marvel Meow by Nao Fuji hits shelves on October 12, 2021; Deadpool: Samurai by writer Sanshirou Kasama and artist Hikaru Uesugi will hit in February 2022; and Secret Reverse by Yu-Gi-Oh!’s Kazuki Takahashi coming in summer 2022, with more titles to follow. We can’t wait!

It’s been almost three years since Deadpool graced our movie screens in his trademark vulgar fashion. And although we know Ryan Reynolds is coming to the MCU as Deadpool at some point, it’s just not soon enough in our opinion. Aside from the pages of Marvel Comics, just what does one do if they just need to have the Merc With the Mouth in their life right now?

Well, thanks to Geeks are Sexy, we might have the perfect answer for you. Etsy seller MetalArtProductions created a life-size metal sculpture of Wade Wilson, perfect to display in your home. Maybe place it in your backyard, and scare all those pesky raccoons away. (Just not Rocket Raccoon.) And it will only set you back a mere $10,145.03. You can check out images of this red-and-black beauty right here.

MetalArtProductions' amazing Deadpool metal statue.

MetalArtProductions

MetalArtProductions artists hand craft each unique piece they create, as is the case with this Deadpool piece. Only parts that are recycled are used. Each piece undergoes hours of designing and meticulous planning. Once a design is ready, the welding process starts. This can take anywhere from hours, up to months. All depending on the size, scale and detail of a particular piece. Rigorous cleaning removing all excess dirt comes next. After that, extra welding joints are taken away, then it’s smoothed and painted. The paint helps protect them from rust and keeps them looking and feeling like new.

MetalArtProductions

Aside from Deadpool, MetalArtProductions also has some other Marvel-ous life size sculptures, including Iron Man. They kind of had to make one of him, right? There are also several pieces of metal art based on a metric ton of your favorite pop culture properties. Everything from Alien, Predator, Transformers, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Star Wars has some amazing pieces in this shop. Ryan Reynolds Shares Definitely Fake DEADPOOL Fan Letter https://nerdist.com/article/ryan-reynolds-fake-deadpool-fan-letter/ Mon, 15 Feb 2021 21:51:20 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=787462 Ryan Reynolds celebrated Deadpool's fifth anniversary by sharing some "lost" fan correspondence from 2016. It might not be real, but it's real funny.

The post Ryan Reynolds Shares Definitely Fake DEADPOOL Fan Letter appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Ryan Reynolds, noted good guy and craft gin enthusiast, celebrated Deadpool‘s fifth anniversary with another touching story that highlights his special relationship with fans. He shared some lost correspondence with a big fan of the Merc with a Mouth, including Reynolds’ reply that never got mailed. Probably because neither is real. But one thing that’s definitely true is that this whole “exchange” is really funny.

The former Green Lantern star took to Twitter to celebrate five years of donning Deadpool‘s red mask by posting a letter he received from a “fan” named “Hunter” (which we first heard about at THR) back in 2016. In his letter, a highly complimentary Hunter, who sounds like a five-year-old in one sentence and a PR veteran in the next, talks about his love of Deadpool. He also praises the film’s producers who “didn’t tone down” the film’s R-rating. The whole “English class assignment” might almost be believable if not for young Hunter signing off with a hope to get a beer with Reynolds some day.

There’s no question the actor’s “lost” response is a clever work of fiction. It’s full of wildly inaccurate predictions and comments that are obviously hilarious in 2021. That includes laughing at the thought of Disney and the MCU producing a Deadpool movie. (Which is going to happen.) Reynolds’ commitment to acting and acting alone, without any distractions from something like a small business. (Of which he now has many.) His wife Blake Lively giving birth to their second and “final” child. (They now have three kids.) And that we would get a new Deadpool sequel every two years “like clockwork.” (That clock is broken.)

That’s not all he’s wrong about. He also mentions his enthusiasm for famous failures like the Fyre Festival and the “Thanos” [sic] blood company. Reynolds also comments on Tom Brady’s guaranteed lifetime tenure with the Patriots, as well as his own love affair with beer and beer only. All before signing off that in 2020 there will be nothing better than “handshakes and hugs.”

Ryan Reynolds Shares 'Lost' DEADPOOL Fan Letter_1Ryan Reynolds

For someone to be that wrong about literally everything they’d have to see the future. So clearly this letter was fake. Either that or Ryan Reynolds’ actually did get Cable’s Temporal Dial to work. If he did, forget about going back and sending this letter in 2016. Can he please go back and warn everyone about 2020 instead?

DEADPOOL 3 Was Originally a Wolverine and Deadpool Road Trip https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-3-wolverine-logan-road-trip-rashomon/ Fri, 29 Jan 2021 00:03:16 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=783715 Ryan Reynolds shared that Deadpool 3 would have been a Wolverine and Deadpool road trip before Disney bought Fox, and we feel robbed.

The post DEADPOOL 3 Was Originally a Wolverine and Deadpool Road Trip appeared first on Nerdist.

It was a weird day when Disney purchased Fox. The acquisition threw the status of a lot of films into question, including (maybe especially) Fox’s Marvel movies. Imagining Ryan Reynolds’ foul-mouthed take on Wade Wilson in the Disney realm seemed far-fetched. While Deadpool 3 is absolutely moving forward under the Disney umbrella and will become an R-rated MCU film, it could have been something else. Ryan Reynolds shared on Thursday afternoon that the pre-Disney Deadpool 3 would have been a road trip between Wolverine and Deadpool.

In other words, we could have had it all.

Hugh Jackman’s Logan alongside Reynolds’ Deadpool? It’s perfection. Jackman and Reynolds already have a long-running “feud” on social media. They regularly throw barbs at each other. We have no doubt that energy would translate well to their superhero counterparts. Imagine how many times Deadpool would have to stop for bathroom breaks and how perturbed Logan would be. And perhaps the best part of this cool as hell sounding film? Reynolds mentioned the story would have unfolded “Rashomon style.”

Named after Akira Kurosawa‘s 1950 film Rashomon, the Rashomon effect is all about the unreliable narrator. Viewers see an event from multiple, contradictory vantage points, and thus have no idea who is actually telling the truth. Watching Logan (whose last appearance was in 2017’s Logan) and Deadpool play something like that out? Yeah, it would have ruled.

Deadpool side by side with Logan

Fox

We’re sure Deadpool 3 will be fun and full of the irreverence we love. However, we’ll have this might have been in the back of our heads.

Reynolds dropped this Deadpool bomb while posting about Bell Let’s Talk, a Canadian program that intends to break the silence and stigma around mental illness. However, many have criticized Bell, a telecommunications company, for making it more a marketing ploy than about mental health.

Ryan Reynolds Sends Special Message to Young Fan with Cancer https://nerdist.com/article/ryan-reynolds-sends-message-fan-with-cancer/ Tue, 19 Jan 2021 18:05:59 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=781073 Ryan Reynolds once again showed why he's one of Hollywood's true good guys by sending a very special message to a young fan battling cancer.

The post Ryan Reynolds Sends Special Message to Young Fan with Cancer appeared first on Nerdist.

As much as we love him, Deadpool isn’t an ideal hero. Sure, Wade Wilson has certain laudable qualities. But when it comes to picking role models, you can definitely do better than the murder-loving Merc With a Mouth. However, when it comes to actors, it’s hard to find many than the man who plays him. Ryan Reynolds has consistently shown again and again that he is truly one of Hollywood’s good guys. And while we didn’t need one, he has provided yet another reminder why he consistently earns our admiration. He recently left a loving message for a young fan battling cancer.

Reynolds recently took time to reach out to 11-year-old Brody Dery (which we first heard about at EW). Brody’s mother Randi had posted a message for the actor online telling him about her son. The young man is fighting 3B Hodgkins Lymphoma, which he was diagnosed with a year ago, as well as Crohn’s disease. As a result his mother had to leave her job to take care for him, which has involved making nine hour trips to Vancouver for Brody’s treatments.

The pair has found comfort during this difficult time by watching the Deadpool movies. Brody’s mom says her son is a big fan of the character, which is why she reached out to Reynolds. Within just 24 hours they got a message from their fellow Canadian. And what a beautiful message it was.

“Brody, it’s Ryan Reynolds. I just heard a little bit about your story and I just wanted to send you this video and let you know that I’m thinking about you. And I’m sending you tons of love. And I’m sending you strength. Whatever strength I’ve got. Man, you have a ton of people in your life that love you so much. And I know you’ve been going through it. I know it’s been a challenge lately. But you know something, Brody, you’re just the man for the job. So I’m sending you lots of love. I hope I get to meet you in person one of these days. And hang in there. Okay pal, bye.”

Ryan Reynolds Sends Young Fan With Cancer Special Message_120th Century

Randi told CTV News in Canada her son’s “jaw hit the floor” when he saw it. “He keeps saying, ‘I feel special – I feel like I’m the movie star.'” With the bravery Brody is showing, he sounds more like a hero to us.

As does the person who reached out to him. Because while Deadpool comes with some questions marks as a hero, Ryan Reynolds does not.

DEADPOOL 3 Will Be an R-Rated MCU Movie https://nerdist.com/article/deadpool-3-mcu-movie-r-rated/ Mon, 11 Jan 2021 17:27:20 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=779058 Marvel's Kevin Feige says that Deadpool 3 will not only introduce Ryan Reynold's Wade Wilson to the MCU, but that it will keep its R rating.

Disney’s acquisition of Fox Entertainment Group was inevitably going to lead to the inclusion of the Fantastic Four in the MCU. And it seems a certainty that one day the X-Men will also find their way to the franchise. The biggest question is what the Disney-owned Marvel Cinematic Universe will do with the Deadpool. Ryan Reynolds’ vulgar superhero is the antithesis of the company’s family-friendly approach. The world of Captain America cares about language. Thus, it’s never been clear whether or not the Merc with a Mouth would officially exist alongside the Avengers. But Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige now says Deadpool 3 will be an MCU movie, and it’s going to be rated R.

DEADPOOL 3 Will Be an R-Rated MCU Movie_1

Disney

Collider spoke to Marvel’s top executive ahead of WandaVision‘s premiere on Disney+. During the interview, Feige was asked about Deadpool 3, which Bob’s Burgers writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin are currently working on. The Marvel executive said Ryan Reynold’s is currently “overseeing” the script, which “will be rated R.” And while it won’t start filming this year due to Reynolds’ schedule, Feige said he is excited to bring a “very different type of character in the MCU.”

While this answers one giant question, it raises so many more. Since Deadpool already exists in Fox’s X-Men movies, do those stories now also exist in the MCU? Or will Deadpool cross over to this cinematic universe thanks to multidimensional travel? (Possibly even before his own film, via Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness?) And once he gets there, will Wade Wilson still be breaking the fourth wall? Could that be too weird for the MCU? And will Disney also release a kid-friendly version of the movie so their youngest fans can still keep up with every installment in the franchise?

We got one important answer about Deadpool’s future in the MCU. But there’s so much we still don’t know. And it should be a lot of f***ing fun to get those answers.

The Marvel movie has hired writers.

The post DEADPOOL 3 Hires BOB’S BURGERS Writers appeared first on Nerdist.

We all knew that the one Marvel Comics property that would likely survive the Disney acquisition of 20th Century Studios was going to be Deadpool. That’s just what happens when the first two movies make nearly a billion dollars each. But aside from a post from star Ryan Reynolds visiting the Marvel Studios office over a year ago, we haven’t heard anything about a potential Deadpool 3 in some time.

According to Deadline, movement is finally happening. They’re reporting that Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin have been hired to write the screenplay. The Molyneux sisters made a name for themselves as executive producers and writers for the animated hit Bob’s Burgers. This would be the first Deadpool movie without writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese attached.

Deadpool stands with his guns

20th Century Studios

The original report suggests Deadpool 2‘s director, David Leitch, is unlikely to return. This has more to do with his schedule being tied up with other projects in 2021 than anything else. If things change though—a likely scenario in a pandemic world—an offer to Leitch could still happen. Or maybe Deadpool is just one of those franchises that winds up having a different director each time, the only constant being Ryan Reynolds.

We have ton of questions about the third Deadpool movie. Will it stay R-rated under the Marvel Studios banner? For that matter, will Wade Wilson actually join the MCU. Or will he stay in his own weird corner of the Marvel cinematic multiverse? And speaking of multiverses, what are the odds that Deadpool winds up in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness? One thing’s for sure: given how immensely popular the character is, expect Deadpool to have a long cinematic life under Marvel boss Kevin Feige. It’s just a question of what it will all look like.

Us nerds sure do love a good crossover. Whether it’s Justice League vs. Avengers or Luke Skywalker vs. Captain Picard, we eat it up. Now, thanks to Bored Panda, we’ve discovered an artist who takes his love of mash-ups to new heights. Artist Dino Tomic has a series of illustrations featuring several well known characters from pop culture, some fictional and some real people, each drawn in nine different animated styles. You can check out some of our favorites down below:

Yoda

Master Yoda still manages to exudes hundreds of years of serenity, even as Bob the Builder. And we already know he’d kick everyone’s butt in sword fighting, so why not make him a Ninja Turtle? Plus, that Archer version of Yoda is actually Baby Yoda.

The Joker

The fact that the Archer version of The Joker is just Joaquin Phoenix sans makeup seems like the right call.

Batman

Dino Tomic

Speaking of Gotham City freaks, the Family Guy version of Batman is very Adam West. Which is appropriate, since we’re pretty sure any Batman that Seth McFarlane would have had on his show would have been played by the actual Adam West.

Venomized Characters

Is there an online petition we can sign to see that Venomized Teletubbie is made an official part of the Teletubbies canon??

Deadpool

Given Ryan Reynold’s nationality, it’s only appropriate that the South Park version of Deadpool is clearly of Canadian origin.

Pennywise the Clown

Somehow, the Tim Burton version of Pennywise the Clown is more nightmare inducing than the real one.

Snoop Dogg

Points awarded for making the Peanuts version of Snoop Dogg just actually being Snoopy. It’s a no-brainer that somehow I haven’t seen done until now.

Pikachu

A Powerpuff Girls version of Pikachu would either be the girl’s greatest enemy or their greatest BFF. We can’t decide which.

There are several more just like this on Dino Tomic’s official website, where you can purchase prints now. Be sure to head on over there and check out all of his amazing work.

Ryan Reynolds Narrates Goofy Hugh Jackman Coffee Commercial https://nerdist.com/article/ryan-reynolds-narrates-hugh-jackman-coffee-ad/ Tue, 15 Sep 2020 15:44:17 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=753107 Ryan Reynolds narrates Hugh Jackman's transformation from an angry, mean loner into the nice guy we all know in a new coffee commercial.

The thing with actors is they are nothing more than professional liars. They make money by pretending to be people they aren’t. Usually that happens in front of a camera, but many also present a false image of who they are off-screen. Well, it’s time to call out two of the biggest frauds in Hollywood for who they really are, because at this point it’s clear that Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have been playing as all for fools. Oh, no, they’re still super, super nice people. It’s just that that their obviously fake “feud” isn’t even pretending to be real anymore. Not when Reynolds is narrating a coffee ad starring Jackman.

But at least it’s all for a good cause. Even if it does feature a particularly grumpy Jackman.

Reynolds performs the voiceover for a new Laughing Man Coffee ad that shows Hugh Jackman in a way we’ve never seen him before—being a jerk. The promo features the former Wolverine living an angry, isolated life in his apartment. From his loft he screams at both local kids and his own adorable dog.

Ryan Reynolds/Laughing Man Coffee

But the Greatest Showman we all know and love arrives when Jackman drinks his coffee. And that coffee is really the best part of this whole thing. As Reynolds wrote on his YouTube page, “Hugh Jackman founded Laughing Man coffee so he could give back 100% of his profits to the fair trade farmers who grow it—and also to make himself way less of an asshole. That coffee is actual magic.” Well mission accomplished on both ends.

The second best part of this commercial, though, is the bonus joke the Deadpool star got in because of this ad.

Ah, that’s the stuff. Because while this feud has always been fake, we still like to pretend it’s real.

Cosplaying is a great way to pay tribute to our favorite characters, especially those with whom we connect with emotionally. But one young man found a way to celebrate himself by pulling off one of the best, most personal superhero costumes we will ever see. John Quinn of Millington, Tennessee, a person with burn scars on his body and face, cosplayed as Deadpool without a mask. And it got the attention and admiration of Wade Wilson himself, Ryan Reynolds.

Error occurred!

Earlier this year, John Quinn shared an uplifting and inspiring post to his Instagram account Jadiant (which we first heard about at Bored Panda). He dressed up as mask-less Deadpool, even learning how to do a split for extra authenticity. But this was more than just a great example of cosplay. It was personal, as the Marvel character means a lot to Quinn. He explained just how much in his post:

“Deadpool has honestly made me way more confident. Anyone who has read or watched anything about Deadpool, knows his face and body are pretty messed up. So it’s only natural that I cosplay him. I wanted to be authentic as possible, and that was to not wear a mask. It’s so easy to cover up who I am, and to give In to despair. Deadpool just makes me not care about that stuff and show my true self. This is me, and I’m not Ashamed about it. Deadpool is icy clean, and he’s helped my self esteem so much. I’m owning who I am, and cosplaying Deadpool makes it that much easier.”

_1Sony

That positive message alone would be reason enough to celebrate young Quinn’s incredible outlook and cosplay. But his dream did come true when forever-good guy Ryan Reynolds responded as Quinn had hoped the Deadpool star might.

Reynolds commented, “Holy sh*t, Jadiant, this made my YEAR. Can’t even describe what this post means to me. Also, I can do the splits… but only once a year. And it has to be in the lobby of a hospital.”

When Quinn saw the response he was overjoyed, saying that Reynolds had made this “so worth it.” On that we must disagree with this remarkable young man. Neither Deadpool nor Ryan Reynolds made this worth it. John Quinn did that on his own.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is still almost a year away from hitting movie theaters. But the good folks at Hasbro are going to have something special to tide all the fervent alien symbiote fans over until then. The company just announced on the Hasbro Pulse livestream that pre-orders are up for a new wave of Marvel Legends action figures, all featuring Venomized version of classic Spidey-verse characters!

VENOM Infects All-New Marvel Legends Action Figure Line_1

Hasbro

The figures in this wave bring together several fan favorite characters from across the Spider-verse, including a figure based on Venom from the 2018 big screen version. Although that figure doesn’t come with a Tom Hardy head sculpt. The coolest part of this wave is that if you collect all of them, the Build-A-Figure will be none other than Venompool! It’s the ultimate ’90s Marvel action figure!

Aside from the movie version of Venom, the other figures in this wave include a ’90s Spider-Man: The Animated Series style Morbius, Cletus Kasady as Carnage, Maximum Venom Miles Morales, Ghost-Spider (a.k.a. Spider-Gwen), and Phage. Interestingly, Peter Parker didn’t make the cut this time. Well, he’s probably sick of that black alien goo by now anyway.

Miles Morales, the likable new Spidey and star of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse looks downright sinister all Venomized. He’s now up for pre-order at Hasbro for $19.99.

Future movie star and “Living Vampire” Michael Morbius’ figure is in his Spider-Man: The Animated Series outfit for this figure. A true throwback for any ’90s kids out there. He’s also now up for pre-order at $19.99.

Another alien symbiote who once tangled with Venom and Carnage back in the day was Phage, who gets their own Marvel Legends figure at last. Phage is also available for pre-order now.

And the true pièce de résistance of this wave, the Build-A-Figure Venomized Deadpool. Wade Wilson thought he looked rough before, but this is a face only his mother could love.

Due to everyone sheltering in place these past several months, we’ve had some unprecedented cast reunions via Zoom, ranging from Hannibal to The Lord of the Rings. And another one just got scratched off of our reunion wish list, as much of the original X-Men cast reunited for a good cause.

And then…a certain “Merc With The Mouth” actor crashed the party. And things got really good.

Sir Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Halle Berry (Storm), and Famke Janssen (Jean Grey) all got together virtually as part of the Global Goal fundraising effort. Sadly, fellow OG mutants Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, and Anna Paquin could not attend. But in their place, this brief reunion yielded a few big surprises, including Ryan Reynolds. Yes, Deadpool was the “surprise” guest at this get-together. And his presence yielded predictably hilarious results.

He wasn’t the only surprise guest, either. The “junior” versions of Charles Xavier and Jean Grey, James McAvoy and Sophie Turner, dropped in to chat. Yes, the whole thing was totally staged for a good laugh, but that didn’t make it any less awesome to watch.

The whole reunion wound up being pretty short and sweet, and had all the actors gently poking fun at the X-Men films’ convoluted timelines. Not only that, but everyone got to pick on the runt of the X-Men franchise litter, better known as X-Men Origins: Wolverine. (Although is it even the black sheep of the family anymore? A few other X-films can sure give it a run for its money).

The X-Men cast members also got to crack wise about all the other big franchise reunions going on right now. Patrick Stewart joked about needing to run off to go to a Star Trek: The Next Generation reunion, and we honestly hope that goes from joke to reality soon. They did one for Marina Sirtis’ birthday…can the fans get one now too?? Asking for a friend.

As a talking toy head, that is.

Woverine’s most iconic trait is his claws. And for Spider-Man, it’s wallcrawling, Meanwhile, Marvel’s Deadpool is known chiefly for his penchant for constantly talking nonstop, always cracking wise, and dropping F-bombs. They don’t call him “the Merc with the Mouth” for nothin’ ya know.

Now, thanks to Hasbro’s Marvel Legends toy line, fans everywhere can own the ultimate Deadpool collectible that highlights the hero’s most notable feature. A life-size scale replica of Wade Wilson’s head—and one that never shuts up. However, we should specify that this is for adult fans everywhere, as the toy is as R-rated as one would expect from Wade Wilson.

An Actual DEADPOOL Talking Head Toy Can Now Be Yours_1

Hasbro

An interactive, app-enhanced collectible, the Deadpool head has over 600 sound effects and phrases, and has multiple sensors and motors to creative expressive movement. Using the free app, users can set Deadpool up to play various pranks, insult their friends and loved ones, or even wake them up every morning. Hasbro even made a commercial for this new premium toy, which you can check out down below:

No, we must remind you that this Deadpool head isn’t voiced by Ryan Reynolds, but it does sound a bit like him. It’s also remarkably life-like, with reaction to sounds and programmed responses based on where the head’s moved around the house. And although it’s technically not movie Deadpool, he does have the same eye expressions and mouth movements as he does on the big screen. Since we have no idea when Deadpool 3 is coming, this should be enough to tide hardcore fans over for the time being.

The Marvel Legends Deadpool’s Premium Interactive Head is available now for pre-order at Hasbro Pulse. and will set you back $99, with shipping expected sometime this fall. Although not directly stated anywhere, it appears that chimichangas are not included. Sorry everyone.

MARVEL Will Resume Shipping Comics This Month https://nerdist.com/article/marvel-ship-comics-again-may-27-diamond/ Fri, 01 May 2020 20:35:23 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=714774 Marvel comics like Amazing Spider-Man and X-Men will return to comic shops and digital platforms on May 27th.

The COVID-19 crisis has turned the comics industry upside down. DC announced they would begin shipping to stores in April, leaving fans wondering when Marvel would make their move. Well, today the company announced they would begin comics retail again on May 27. And an inside source confirmed to Nerdist that the comics will be distributed through Diamond.

Marvel Comics, Art by Alex Ross

In the official announcement, Marvel didn’t mention how they would be bringing those comics to shops. Though they didn’t name Diamond in the release a source confirmed they would be returning to the Diamond model. This will bring relief to retailers who were worried about DC Comics’ new distribution model. It isn’t surprising that Marvel will be returning to Diamond after the company stated they would begin to ship comics on May 20. It may be disappointing to some readers though, who were hoping that the industry might see a return to a true direct market.

Aside from the business of it all, it means you’ll be able to potentially get Marvel comics again in store and online. If you want to know whether your shop will be open and receiving the new comics, you can check out the Comic Shop Locator. Titles that are returning include: Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers, Marauders, Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, Venom, and many, many more. You can read the full list of releases until July here. As you might notice if you check the list it’s a lot of trade collections and not many new titles.

It’ll be interesting to see how this news lands. Retailers have been worried about receiving comics during the COVID-19 crisis, which is still on-going. So, will the shelter-in-place order effect how Marvel’s comics will sell? We’ll have to wait and see. It’ll also be interesting to see how the Montreal based comic printers Trans Continental are effected by this choice. With Quebec only just slowly loosening their pandemic regulations it seems unlikely they’ll be ready to get fully back into business so soon. Which might explain why the full list of releases looks like a lot less than fans were hoping for.

Basically this another step forward for comics fans. But it still leaves many questions as we got into the next few months without knowing how the pandemic will continue to impact the industry.

First Look: Hasbro’s Marvel Legends X-MEN Movies Figures https://nerdist.com/article/hasbro-marvel-legends-x-men-movie-figures-exclusive/ Sat, 22 Feb 2020 20:00:49 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=692282 The X-Men movies were a huge part of our filmic landscape for 20 years. Now Hasbro is paying tribute with a wave of Marvel Legends figures based on the mutants' cinematic iterations.

The post First Look: Hasbro’s Marvel Legends X-MEN Movies Figures appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

The Fox-era of X-Men movies is over. Sure, we’re getting The New Mutants in April, but that’ll be all she wrote in terms of that version of those characters. Even if you didn’t love how everything wrapped up, there’s no denying those 12 movies made an indelible mark on superhero films and Hollywood as a whole. No reason not to celebrate them! Hasbro knows this. This weekend at New York Toy Fair, Hasbro unveiled a line of hyper-detailed X-Men movie franchise figures in their insanely popular (and awesome) Marvel Legends line, and we have the exclusive right here!

Hasbro is killing it with their Marvel Legends line of figures. While they’ve done some amazing comics-inspired X-Men toys, this marks the first time they’ve tackled the likenesses of any of the movie versions. And we have to say, these are pretty darn awesome looking. Each employs the company’s hyper-realistic face-mapping technology. This ensures the figures look the most like their respective actors as possible. And you wouldn’t have it any other way!

First up, let’s take a look at the figures based on the Deadpool movies.

MARVEL LEGENDS SERIES 6-INCH CABLE Figure

The Josh Brolin version of Cable is a Marvel Legends figure.

HasbroJosh Brolin as Cable was one of the most ingenious casting choices in the Fox-era. And with this figure, complete with the most massive blaster rifle we’ve ever seen, Brolin is now immortalized in two Marvel Legends figures. The second, of course, is the MCU Thanos figure. You got the metal arm and the teddy bear; what more do you need? This figure is a Wal-Mart and WalMart.com exclusive, just so’s you know.

MARVEL LEGENDS SERIES 6-INCH DOMINO Figure

Zazie Beetz's version of Domino from Deadpool 2 is a new Marvel Legends figure.

HasbroNext up is Zazie Beetz’s version of Domino from Deadpool 2, which we have to say looks pretty terrific. She comes with pistols in holsters (a Domino staple) and is ready to beat the crap out of anybody, or dodge certain doom with her luck powers. She and Brolin’s Cable, we hope, get to come back in the new MCU version of X-Men movies.

MARVEL LEGENDS SERIES 6-INCH DEADPOOL & NEGASONIC TEENAGE WARHEAD 2-PACK

The Deadpool movie's Negasonic Teenage Warhead is a Marvel Legends figure.

HasbroMovie Deadpool in a 2-pack of Marvel Legends figures with Negasonic Teenage Warhead

HasbroLast for the Deadpool figures is a must-have two-pack. We get both Deadpool, as assayed by Ryan Reynolds, and the movie version of Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Brianna Hildebrand. Negasonic comes with a dope-ass hairstyle and earrings as well as power effects to add to her arms. Deadpool, meanwhile, comes with a pair of katanas, a pair of pistols, and holsters galore. Looking particularly Liefeldian.

Next we move on to X-Men figures proper.

MARVEL LEGENDS SERIES 6-INCH MYSTIQUE Figure

Rebecca Romijn's Mystique joins the new X-Men movies Marvel Legends line

HasbroFirst up is this figure based on Rebecca Romijn’s turn as the villainous and often misunderstood Mystique. No accessories, but tons and tons of articulation, perfect for someone as acrobatic as her.

MARVEL LEGENDS SERIES 6-INCH PROFESSOR X & MAGNETO 2-PACK

Ian McKellen's Magneto joins the new X-Men movies Marvel Legends line

HasbroPatrick Stewart's Professor X joins the new X-Men movies Marvel Legends line

HasbroThe one I’m perhaps most excited about. This two-pack features the X-Men saga’s two most important characters (arguably), Professor Xavier and Magneto. It’s their figurative and literal chess match and the opposing ideologies that drives most of the films’ action. And, geniuses that they are, Hasbro isn’t making you choose between eras. As many of their figures are modular, with different heads and/or arm choices, this two-pack comes with the heads of both Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy’s Charles and both Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender’s Erik. Such a good idea.

James McAvoy's Professor X joins the new X-Men movies Marvel Legends line

HasbroMichael Fassbender's Magneto joins the new X-Men movies Marvel Legends line

HasbroThe Charles figure comes with a wheelchair (naturally) and the Magneto figure’s got what appears to be a take on his Days of Future Past costume. The McKellen head is without helmet, but the Fassbender one is with. Pretty dope.

And, of course, we have a pair of figures based on the real star of the show: Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.

MARVEL LEGENDS SERIES 6-INCH WOLVERINE Figure (jacket)

Hugh Jackman's Wolverine from Origins joins the new X-Men movies Marvel Legends line

HasbroFirst of the two is Logan looking his most GQ. This is, of course, the version of the character with the perfectly coiffed hair from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I have to say, even if the movie isn’t very good, it’s one of Jackman’s best looks.

MARVEL LEGENDS SERIES 6-INCH WOLVERINE Figure (tanktop)

Hugh Jackman from Days of Future Past in packaging for the new X-Men movies Marvel Legends line

HasbroFinally we have a jacket-less, white-tanktopped Wolverine. This version comes with two heads and two sets of hands. The look appears to be a sort of Days of Future Past or The Wolverine version of the character. You get both a calm-looking face and a rage-filled face; you also get metal claws and bone claws. A set of dog tags complete the accessories.

Hugh Jackman's Wolverine with white tanktop and bone claws joins the new X-Men movies Marvel Legends line

HasbroWolverine wears a tanktop in this Marvel Legends figure.

HasbroThis one is an Amazon exclusive. And maybe the best thing about this figure is it’s available for pre-order beginning TODAY (2/22) at 4pm EST. Hop to it!

The single figures have an approximate retail price of $24.99 while the two-packs are $49.99. All of these X-Men movies Marvel Legends figures will drop sometime in Fall of 2020.

Will DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Pull a DC CRISIS? https://nerdist.com/article/doctor-strange-in-the-multiverse-of-madness-dc-crisis/ Thu, 06 Feb 2020 22:47:48 +0000 https://nerdist.com/?post_type=article&p=691179 With the whole Marvel Multiverse in play for the upcoming sequel, Doctor Strange 2 has the potential to be a mega MCU event film on the scale of Captain America: Civil War.

The post Will DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Pull a DC CRISIS? appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness might be the biggest “glow-up” MCU movie since Captain America: Civil War followed The Winter Solder. The third Cap movie didn’t just continue on from a well-regarded film; it also became Avengers 2.0, Iron Man 3.0, and precursors to both Black Panther and Spider-Man: Homecoming. It became a true event film, and not just another Marvel sequel. Here’s why I think Mutliverse of Madness might be Phase 4’s version of that–and also become the Marvel response to DC’s recent Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Will DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Pull a DC CRISIS?_1

Marvel Studios

By potentially nabbing Sam Raimi as director–a legendary movie-maker with a filmography for the ages–it shows that Kevin Feige considers Doctor Strange 2 to be something much bigger than fans had initially imagined. And given that the entire Multiverse will now be in play, I am going to venture a guess that Marvel Studios is looking at what the Arrowverse did, by canonizing almost every aspect of live-action DC shows and movies as part of a greater tapestry. The Doctor Strange sequel could wind up as a true celebration of all big screen Marvel, and not just the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it. Everyone will line up for that, whether they liked the first Doctor Strange movie or not.

Will DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Pull a DC CRISIS?_2

Twentieth Century Fox

Right now, there’s one big hint that this is Kevin Feige’s plan for this movie. As recently as a few months ago, Feige asked Patrick Stewart to return as Professor Charles Xavier in an MCU film. Now, given Stewart’s age, it seems highly unlikely that Feige wanted him to play Professor X in the new MCU version of the X-Men. Whenever they do launch that, they’ll want it to run for a decade or more. And Stewart is almost 80 years old. My hunch is that were Stewart to have returned as Xavier, it would have been for Multiverse of Madness. It’s the one upcoming project we know takes place on multiple Earths–and that could include the Fox X-Men Earth.

The potential addition of Sam Raimi also lends fuel to that fire. He’s the man who helped usher in the dominance of Marvel as a brand with the original Spider-Man trilogy, after all. You don’t attempt to bring him on board to make another version of Thor: The Dark World or Ant-Man and the Wasp. (No shade! I like both those movies! But they were not “events.”) Having him come aboard seems like the perfect opportunity to find someone who’ll deliver something special.

Will DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Pull a DC CRISIS?_3

Twentieth Century Fox

But should this prove the case, which pre-MCU movie worlds might appear? If Feige asked Patrick Stewart to participate, that means some of the Fox-era X-Men are sure to show up. Probably not Hugh Jackman and Stewart, because they felt they made their proper goodbyes with Logan. (And they’d be right.) But what about some X-Men representation with James Marsden as Cyclops, or Anna Paquin’s Rogue? Neither of those actors ever really got to play the comic book accurate versions of those characters. We know Feige wouldn’t do those characters dirty. So why not use them to give the old X-Men universe a proper swan song?

Will DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Pull a DC CRISIS?_4

Twentieth Century Fox

Speaking of the Fox X-Men, we know that Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool is going to make the transition to the MCU at some point. It’s already been stated via multiple sources that Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios are now in charge of that character. They could just reboot the character for the MCU and keep Reynolds in the role, or they could use Multiverse of Madness as a way to bring him in. This movie offers the perfect set up to smoothly transition Wade Wilson out of one universe into another one with little muss or fuss. And we say drag in his version of Colossus while he’s at it.

Will DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Pull a DC CRISIS?_5

Twentieth Century Fox

At least one aspect of the Fox-era Fantastic Four films could be referenced, too. Imagine an Earth where the FF have mostly retired, and the only superhero left standing from the time is the Human Torch, as played by Chris Evans? It would be a fun cameo from an actor who was one of the linchpins of the MCU as Captain America, but who actually got his Marvel start with a totally different character. While I don’t think Evans would want to return as Steve Rogers anytime soon, I bet he’d be down for a cameo as a character no one ever expected him to play again. It might be too fun to resist.

And with Sam Raimi potentially involved, we can’t imagine that he wouldn’t want to refer to his original Spider-Man films if a whole Multiverse is on the menu. While I don’t think we’d see Tobey Maguire convinced to put on the suit again, we could see the potential for something even cooler, and straight from the comics. I’m talking now about the Spectacular Spider-Girl.

Will DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Pull a DC CRISIS?_6

Marvel Comics

Back in the ‘90s, Marvel Comics introduced Spider-Girl, who was the teenage daughter of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson. May “Mayday” Parker discovered she had powers, and at age fifteen took up the family business. Spider-Girl even had her own long-running title. Seeing Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst make an appearance as the middle-aged parents of May Parker would make fans giddy with excitement. Those actors might not just come back to those roles for anyone, but we bet they’d say yes to Sam Raimi. And you’d get a potential future headlining character in Spider-Girl out of it.

Will DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Pull a DC CRISIS?_1

Sony Pictures

At let us not forget, the Raimi Spider-Man films have already been referenced in an MCU film. Well, in a manner of speaking. Remember, J.K. Simmons appeared as J. Jonah Jameson in the post-credits tag for Spider-Man: Far From Home. Yes, it’s a different version of J.J., but it shows that the folks at Marvel are aware of the legacy of those Raimi Spidey movies. It’s definitely something they probably want to embrace. If one version of Simmon’s character exists in the MCU, doesn’t that imply the original version of him is out there somewhere?

There are other potential candidates, too. Imagine a Marvel Zombies world, with Wesley Snipes as Blade holding the undead hordes at bay. Or even Howard the Duck popping up, as a nod to Marvel’s very first movie. Eric Bana’s Hulk would be fun, but complications with Universal might not make that feasible. And we really can’t see Ben Affleck putting on the Daredevil costume for any amount of money. But even if it was just the X-Men, the FF, and Spider-Man, that would be enough to make Multiverse of Madness a true nerd film event for the ages, and not just another MCU sequel.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to hit in summer of 2021.

The post ZOMBIELAND 2 Writers On Resurrecting the Humor & Heart appeared first on Nerdist.

]]>

Zombieland was a runaway hit when it came out in 2009 – and not just because its main character, Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), prioritized cardio above all else in the film’s post-apocalyptic environment. Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were not yet some of Hollywood’s most successful purveyors of slyly self-aware genre comedies (going on to write not one but two Deadpool films), but their aptitude for skewering the mundane details of everyday life while exploring big, broad fantasy concepts tapped right into a thriving appetite for zombie-themed stories while introducing four characters audiences would immediately relate to, laugh at, fall in love with, or do all three.

So when time came to revive that iconic quartet of Columbus, Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) in Zombieland: Double Tap, Reese and Wernick worked closely with director Ruben Fleischer (Venom) and his stars to ensure that a second adventure lived up to its predecessor.

“More than anything, it was about making sure the voice was right,” Reese told Nerdist. “We did early drafts on the script that that had to be changed because of the passage of time. “But it was mostly about coming back and making it really feel like Zombieland. It’s near and dear to us and we kind of live and breathe those characters, so it was making sure it really felt like a Zombieland movie, not just not just an action movie tangentially related to Zombieland.”

Much has changed in the real world since 2009, including Eisenberg and Stone’s respective ascension in Hollywood to movie stardom. But as the duo dove back into the world they created, they tried to focus more on fictional continuity than anything that has occurred in the intervening decade. “Those Woody Harrelsons and Jesse Eisenbergs tend to live in our head anyway, so it’s pretty easy to get into their heads again,” Reese admitted. Wernick added, “But in the world of Zombieland, time stopped in 2009. So in terms of how our characters interact and how we write them, while they’ve lived the last 10 years in Zombieland, life as we know it is still in 2009, so we’re frozen in time in that way.”

“But while Emma went off and became an Oscar winner and Jesse became a movie star and Woody continued to rule the universe, the dynamics of our actual characters haven’t changed,” he continued. “That is, they’ve evolved, but they haven’t had to keep current with what we know in 2019.”

Reese and Wernick’s pedigree has since become a commercial windfall for their collaborators, racking up one hit movie after another. But what continues to distinguish them from others who try to deconstruct genre conventions – or simply take the piss out of them – while retaining a palpable sense of emotional weight is what they consider their constant awareness of the rhythms of real life, stitched into the fictional scenarios they create for the characters that they love. “That tone is such a delicate balance of finding when to weave in and out of action and comedy and drama and heart,” Wernick said. “But real life is all of those things. One person’s life isn’t just a comedy or just drama; people experience all of the above all of the time throughout their day and week and year and life.”

“Interweaving those tones is a way to make a movie feel grounded because the audience is experiencing what they experience on a day to day basis.”

Wernick also said that their insistence on wringing emotionality out of their stories is the key to their success, not just with Zombieland, but all of their projects. “The heart is our ‘secret sauce’,” he said. “We’re the funny guys we can make you laugh, but more than anything we want you to feel. And the story is more than anything about this family and about this family getting along, experiencing ordinary problems in extraordinary circumstances – those being zombies and you could turn a corner and die at any point in your day.”
